BRUSSELS, April 28 (Reuters) - NATO is ready to maintain its support for Ukraine in the war against Russia for years, including help for Kyiv to shift from Soviet-era weapons to modern Western arms and systems, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday. He spoke after the Kremlin warned that Western arms supplies to Ukraine, including heavy weapons, posed a threat to the security of the European continent "and provoke instability". read more "We need to be prepared for the long term," Stoltenberg told a youth summit in Brussels. "There is absolutely the possibility that this war will drag on and last for months and years." The NATO chief said the West would continue to put maximum pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation", through sanctions and economic as well as military aid to Kyiv. "NATO allies are preparing to provide support over a long period of time and also help Ukraine to transit, move from old Soviet-era equipment to more modern NATO-standard weapons and systems that will also require more training," Stoltenberg said. Most of the heavy weapons NATO countries have sent to Ukraine so far are Soviet-built arms still in the inventories of east European NATO member states, but the United States and some other allies have started to supply Kyiv with Western howitzers. Germany on Tuesday announced the shipment of Gepard tanks equipped with anti-aircraft guns to Ukraine, the first time Berlin has approved heavy weapons deliveries for Kyiv. read more Ukraine's pleas for heavy weapons have intensified since Moscow shifted its offensive to the Donbas, an eastern region with largely flat, open terrain seen as better suited for tank battles than the areas in the north around the capital Kyiv where much of the earlier fighting took place. The $20 billion in military aid includes $5 billion in additional authority to transfer weapons and equipment to Ukraine from U.S. inventories, $6 billion for the Ukraine security assistance initiative and $4 billion for the State Department’s Foreign Military Financing program. “The president’s funding request is what we believe is needed to enable Ukraine’s success over the next five months of this war,” an administration official told reporters on a call Wednesday. “And we have every expectation that our partners and allies … will continue to provide comparable levels of assistance going forward.” Edit: This probably means that the US has decided to prepare UA for a full military western modernization, including attack drones, etc. Also means that Biden is committed to supporting a UA counterattack, instead of forcing some Minsk style compromise again.

Russia cannot concede on Ukraine, they view it as Russian. It’ll come down to force of arms.

But still, such cooperation couldn't be as wide as before, or Motor-Sich wouldn't fall into near-bankruptcy situation, being saved by Chinese cash flow. And "ODK-Klimov" reported steady increase of domestic produced engines (it was 10 in 2014, but became 230 in 2019). https://www.uecrus.com/rus/presscenter/odk_news/?ELEMENT_ID=3262

Russia makes a lot more money on oil compared to gas. Gas is a bigger deal for europe, especially because it is harder to replace, but oil is a bigger part of the russian income. Source Crude Oil 110119.40 USD Million Dec/21 Petroleum Products 69955.80 USD Million Dec/21 Natural Gas 55507.20 USD Million Dec/21 So about 180 billion USD in Oil stuff, 55 billion USD in natural gas. But yeah, "they are shooting back" is kind of a silly complaint.

This is great and it's good that Germany is turning around even if it's slower than what I'd prefer.

It's highly doubtful than a NATO country would do those operations and I don't recall a lot of domestic terrorisms in Russia. It could also be those ukrainians who got shipped from their country, or guerilla style tactics by self governed ukr militias but that's basically still Ukraine. The targets are also all military and near the border so why split hairs to find some criminal mastermind ? Besides who actually cares about Russia's claims ? They have fabricated stories in the past to achieve their goals.

As a first step Slovenia and Chechia would send their T-72s to Ukraine which would be replaced by Germany with Western equipment. This makes sense as Ukraine won't need additional training to put those tanks to use. Germany will also train Ukrainians on Western equipment, as I understand for future deliveries. Currently being discussed (not agreed yet) is the delivery of up to 100 Marder IFV, 88 Leopard 1 tanks, and up to 100 PzH2000 (!) to Ukraine (By delivering from Dutch and German army arsenals and backfilling from KMW, the manufacturer). Even anything close to that number would be a game changer, especially the PzH2000. Trained crews provided they would rip through Russian positions. Just to pop on here another very interesting development is Brazil agreeing to send the ammo for the Marders along with personnel to train with them. Brazil was cautiously denying that it was an invasion at the start but is smelling opportunity and seeing how the wind is now blowing in the other direction.

Politics is the art of compromise. Every country in their own context has to take a path, long or short. Roosevelt had to cajole his country into WWII but it took Pearl Harbour to finally get there. We can throw jibes like Chicken Run: "Americans. Late for every war." But what's most important is they eventually get there in time to make a difference.
