So don't you dare making stupid blanket statement like "living in China sucks" because there is just so much more to live for than the imposing government. I never said China is good. I'm saying I lived in China, my life has been good, therefore theres no reason for me to not like it.
just because you live well doesnt really negate the fact that so many people don't. i say thats a perfectly good reason to not like it.

I think an important question to ask is if these limitations on freedom are beneficial, at least in the short term, for the people of china.
They most likely are.
But I think we all know that in the long term, they are not.

so china's recovering from a lot of bad accumulated historical precedents, but i think they are headed in the right direction =). They are kind of like starcraft 2. this whole pronunciation on criticism of government is just patch 0.0000001. it'll be a few hundred thousand more before they start the beta.
michael moore would argue that while china is in a bad position but definitely going in the right direction (rather speedily by historical standards and being one of the few instances of being able to make changes to government without bloodshed), Bush is doing the opposite for the US.
I can't wait for the next person to be elected US president whoever s/he is. I still don't know what to think about Hillary though. Obama is awesome, but i doubt he'll get elected this time around. there are so many behind the scenes stuff that's happening to our constitution that if anyone with power-mongering ideas managed to get elected, i think things could turn out even worse than what bush did.
ideas?

china is changing so incredibly fast
its crazy, shitloads of new construction amongst old poor villages
a juxtaposition of the old and the new in every sense of the word; market philosophies, political ideologies
the government is doing the best it can under the extremely stressful circumstances
china will go the way of south korea i think

China will never improve when nationalistic Chinese like evanthebouncy and aphelion (no offense evan, but you say some ridiculous shit in these threads) refuse to acknowledge that there's even a problem, instead choosing to point fingers at the rest of the world like "And what makes YOUR country so good?" as if we're talking about a dick-measuring contest rather than form of government.

And right-wingism depends on mass government censorship, blind nationalism and militarism, social Darwinism, the enforcement of racial purity, eugenics, and groupthink.

People should be able to choose the way they live. It's the old question, would you give up freedom for security. The Chinese have that choice made for them, their freedom denied. And the case of India proves that a country as populace as China can still be run using western values. Not necessarily, that argument didn't work with nepal, and also India is a disorganized, poor starving country, the government of India isn't even that centralized, all of the power is divided between states that often qaurrel with each other, and a fraction of the population are part of the elite, this included the IT engineers, and outsourcers, they're numbers are big but the there more poor people. India definitely should not be such an example, its a very very underdeveloped country even though recently we think otherwise. China is fine the way it is, they're better off, that they have a centralized government that can make decisions on the country easily. India on the other hand is such a poor case, I'm not even going to get started. I am going to tell you however is that reason why India is far behind compared to China is because of the diffrence in goverments.
India is another story. But Kwark your argument is pretty void consider that democracy in India did not in fact solve any problems. India has their democracy but they also have most if not all the social problems China has, their infrastructure is underdevloped, poor ppl still get trashed on, there aren't even tap water availabe in poor areas of their city.
I don't think Chinese people are as clueless as you think. We know the government is shit, we know the flaws of the system but we just don't believe that a democratic ideal thrust upon us by outsider is a viable answer to our situation.

It's not. This is satire of New Zealand's Electoral Finance Bill: http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2007/07/cog_on_electoral_finance_bill.html
The only reason China is mentioned is as an example of an oppressive, non-democratic regime where people don't have freedom of speech.
He's protesting New Zealand election campaign legislation by saying it's like something you'd expect in a country like China.
I'm not sure, he might also be referencing the recent bill that strictly limits use of footage recorded in Parliament or some other limits on political expression I haven't heard about. It's kind of subtle for a non-kiwi like me to puzzle out.
