so-called 'criticism' aye... reposted from kiwiblog.co.nz - man, will posting this result in people from China being unable to access this site?

The following are the proposed rules from the Chinese Government on criticism of the Government in 2008:

1. If you wish to significantly criticise the Government you must register with the Government and provide your name, address and contact details.

2. Political parties and candidates are banned from publishing their views on any government issue.

3. Regulated criticism shall include any advertisement, any message handed out or displayed, any message sent to any member of the public, delivered to a member of the public or left at the house of a member of the public, any broadcast, any film, any video, any non-personal Internet message and any electronic message.

4. Regulated criticism includes any message advocating a vote against a party in Government, or against any proposition associated with the Government.

5. Commercial advertising which is not in accord with Government policy is also regulated and restricted.

6. Critics must notify the Government of the name and address of their agent who shall be held accountable for their criticisms.

7. The names, addresses and contact details of any significant donors to the criticising organisation must be revealed to the Government or face a $40,000 fine.

8. If a critic receives over $500 from an undisclosed source, they must hand that money over to the Government.

9. Any placards in a protest march must have the name and address of the person who approved them in the placard.

10. Minor critics do not need to register with the Government so long as they swear a statutory declaration that they will spend less than 10% of a significant critic.

11. A significant critic is restricted to two full page advertisements per year. Criticism beyond this level is illegal and can result in jail terms.

12. It shall be illegal for any publisher to accept an advertisement which criticises the Government, or any policy associated with it, unless the critic has registered or signs the aforementioned statutory declaration.

13. Breaches of the anti-criticism law are punishable by up to a year in jail.

'tis a step forwards. Only after you codify repression can you start to reduce it. Beforehand they just banned it all out of hand. Now the critics can slowly complain about minor parts of this, getting it gradually weakened.

That's rich. "Hey guys I'm gonna criticise you here's my adress and such so you can come and throw me in jail while the rest of my family starves."

Piece of shit dictatorship, I feel bad for anyone who has to live there. That's no freedom.

What does that have to do with anything ?

I commented on that rule which is a bullshit rule. It gives the false sense that anyone in china actually has any freedom as to what to say about their government.

Besides, under what kind of circumstances did you live in china? I'm sure you'd be talking different if the government kicked you out of your house and demolished your house. As far as I'm concerned you're some rich prick who doesn't give a fuck about what happens to the poor in your country. Who cares if it's your favorite country to live in.

Just like right-wing ideology depends on oversimplification, ignorance, prejudice, and self-righteous nutjobs like you?

My maternal grandparents almost got lynched in the Cultural Revolution, we lost significant property to government confiscation in the 60s, and my paternal grandparents are retired workers at an aircraft factory who are receiving about $10 a week for compensation. Like I said, know your shit before you talk.

Edit: For the record, one of my primary ambitions in life is to improve the quality of living for the poor in my country, and I fully intend to return there to do what I can one day. You have no basis for your accusations.

Why does everyone assume that just because there's a law that seems strange to everyone outside a country, that everyone in the country must automatically be suffering? As if the mere existence of the Patriot Act causes every American to live in fear. 99% of the population doesn't care, and lives their life fully.

That's not to say that these rules are right, just that one hsouldn't assume that their existence means that everyone is repressed and dispossessed.

Yeah, you really disproved my point there that the country sucks balls. Why do I have to know my shit? All I said was that that rule is bullshit, if you think I'm so wrong why don't you give me an argument about why these rules are so awesome.

Also I was talking about how YOU live now not your grandparents, as I doubt you were even alive in the 60's. Face it, you have it damn good otherwise you'd not be posting on a goddamn sc board.

Because I love the culture, the country, the people, and the food. Because instead of listening to outsiders dump on our country all the time this is the most forward looking and optimistic country I've lived in. This is a nation that believes that its time its coming, and there is a feeling of dynamism in the air. The outside media has always tended to demonize China and show either the worst parts of it or the most scary implications of its rise. And because I'm Chinese, and goddamnit, I'm entitled to some blind, irrational pride for my country and the oldest continous culture in the world. With all the blind and ignorant chest thumping some Americans like, I ought to be given a free pass for some of my own.

Wait a second? Why would socialists be redistributing money to gays and feminists? The point is "from each according to his means to each according to his needs". Not from each according to his wealth to the gays. Jeez.

If it was so great, why do so many try to leave the country in merchandise ships...

Most powerful country in the world is a liberal democracy. People should be able to choose the way they live. It's the old question, would you give up freedom for security. The Chinese have that choice made for them, their freedom denied. And the case of India proves that a country as populace as China can still be run using western values.
