The reason we have to play "Identity Politics" is because we have an extremely exclusionary default. When the existing power dynamic - especially among Republicans - prohibits anything but Christian White Men from holding office, they don't have to advertise themselves. Doesn't mean they're not playing those vile Identity Politics you dislike so much.

In the balance, in the case of the Afghanistan withdrawal, are thousands of troops and their families wondering if they are in fact coming home, or if that deployment they’re planning their lives around will still happen.

“It may be a little bit uncertain for some folks, but I know the chain of command completely knows what we’re doing and where we’re going,” Esper said.

Have other defense secretaries had to spend this much time trying to balance the president’s demands with their very real consequences to national security?

“Probably not,” he said. “I don’t know, I’ve only worked for a couple.”

But he has no regrets about how he handled himself.

“At the end of the day, it’s as I said — you’ve got to pick your fights,” he said. “I could have a fight over anything, and I could make it a big fight, and I could live with that — why? Who’s going to come in behind me? It’s going to be a real ‘yes man.’ And then God help us.”

David Bossie tests positive for the coronavirus, sidelining him from legal push

David Bossie, who was recently tasked to head President Trump's re-election legal challenges, tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News.

“Because he can’t be at the campaign headquarters and he can’t be in the Oval Office [due to his diagnosis] Dave’s no longer a part of the decision-making process,” one of the sources said.

Bossie, who heads the conservative advocacy group Citizens United, is apparently at home and feeling OK, the source said, noting that it's particularly problematic that Bossie is now “sidelined” from the legal push he was supposed to lead.

Bossie was most recently seen at a Trump campaign press conference in Phoenix, on Thursday.

Bloomberg News first reported that Bossie had contracted the virus.

We have an update from Alaska, which now says there are 157,209 uncounted ballots — up from 134,664 yesterday (the difference is likely explained by the fact that absentee ballots are still trickling in). That makes Biden’s and Gross’s path to winning a little bit easier, though it would still require an impressive comeback. Biden needs to win more than 67 percent of the outstanding ballots, while Gross needs to win more than 68 percent.
