I mean, that’s cool, you do see that linked document is dated 20Nov2025 though right?

Near as I can tell, what happened here is they needed to issue a new guidance about this stuff for some reason. The old guidance called them “hate symbols” and banned them; in the current political environment they thought that term might get them yelled at by the administration so they went with “potentially divisive symbols.” That got them yelled at by WaPo/the public so for damage control they put out a new guidance saying “divisive or hate symbols.”

Assuming I’m right, the whole thing is pretty stupid. Only part worth paying attention to is the fact that any words even vaguely associated with antiracism or “wokeness” have been classified as wrongthink by the administration, forcing random HR documents writers to try to rebrand their “don’t bring swastikas to work” rule under more neutral terminology as CYA.

Yep. The news wasn't fake, they just walked it back really fast. They do that a lot, actually. Announce something outrageously evil or stupid to rile up the worst part of their base, then walk it back, knowing that their supporters only selectively get news that appeals most to them. They got away with it when Trump said the Neonazis at the Unite the Right march were "very fine people", simultaneously telling the alt-right that he stood by it and more mainstream Republicans that it was out of context. When your base doesn't care if you lie all the time, there's no reason it wouldn't work.

i'm glad to see Trump has changed his mind and decided Mamdani has the potential to do a good job for NYC. I don't think the free buses and five grocery stores will change much though.

1 in 10 Trump voters also voted for Mamdani.

MTG is quitting because she and Trump are no longer buddies:
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, a loyal supporter-turned-critic of President Donald Trump who faced his political retribution if she sought reelection, said Friday she is resigning from Congress in January.

Greene, in a more than 10-minute video posted online, explained her decision and said she didn’t want her congressional district “to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for,” she said.

Greene’s resignation followed a public falling-out with Trump in recent months, as the congresswoman criticized him for his stance on files related to Jeffrey Epstein, along with foreign policy and health care.

Trump branded her a “traitor” and “wacky” and said he would endorse a challenger against her when she ran for reelection next year.

She said her last day would be Jan. 5, 2026.

Over the past few weeks, she'd arbitrarily decided to start criticizing Trump, which was bizarre because he hadn't changed and she was basically riding him and worshipping him for years.

I'm really tempted to just go "see? all those populists are the same raaahrgh" but I think the real story here is how much of a naive moron Trump is.

The president of the United States is willing to instantly flip on who he saw as his ideological nemesis because the guy spent 20 minutes saying nice things to him in private.

Guy seemed straight up in love. Just makes you realize how fucked is anyone who depends on Trump's negotiation skills.

too bad really, the MTG "leading the resistance from within" arc just started getting interesting!

also unrequited love is incredibly cruel, when will they learn that POTUS Narcissus will use you up and spit you out? he has done it time and time again with sooo many people.

this needs to be studied.

Its politics. TBH if its a political issue causing this kind of problem, then things are functioning the way they are supposed to. If she did nothing it would be out of blind party loyalty which sucks and causes no end of shit.

well she could have been useful getting rid of the Orange Elephant in the room.

on a human level though it is very much understandable she calls it quits. getting death threats from "your own people", for making sense for once by pushing against Trump's "the best economy, no inflation, prices are down"...

and in this political climate?

I think she has done the right thing.

Relative to other Presidents I rate Trump's negotiation skills as average... maybe a bit above average. Relative to your average person Trump is better than 99.5% of the population.
I'm glad they are putting their egos aside and are now working together in an attempt to improve the quality of life of the average New Yorker.

Trump pulled such a Reagan move during that presser.
Reporter: "Mr. Mamdani you were asked earlier in the press conference if you retract your statements that Trump is a fascist and you did not. So tell me do you still maintain Trump is a fascist"
Mamdani mumbles, bumbles, and stumbles for 20 seconds.
Trump taps him on the arm ... "just say `yes`. its easier that way. i don't mind"
ROFLMAO.

That was a "There you go again" Reagan moment. Jimmy Carter could lay out a perfect plan for 10 minutes and Reagan could undercut it in four words.

According to ChatGPT "there you go again" ... "is now considered one of the most effective debate rebuttals in U.S. political history."

It wouldn’t be for party loyalty, I mean that’s one of the problems.

I mean a party has to push vaguely in one direction or it becomes a collection of competing views and ultimately dysfunctional as an institution.

But you can have party discipline without this bizarre requirement of basically eternal fealty to Donald Trump specifically.

I mean Magic the Gathering and Liz Cheney’s politics ain’t mine, they rather suck and I think some overlook that to score points as they criticised Trump. But it is quite illuminating that a kind of stock Republican by the standards of 10-15 years ago, and a true MAGA believer both get rinsed for the high crime of criticising Donald Trump.

Yeah seriously. Proud racist silver-spooned "tough guy" Trump suddenly being deferential to an anti-capitalist non-white foreigner, of all people. Bizarre. Trump even knows he's a fascist lol...
There was one moment in particular when Zohran Mamdani seemed like he might have bit off a little more than he could chew by making his lonely pilgrimage down to the lion’s den that is President Trump’s blinged-out Oval Office.

The 34-year-old mayor-elect of New York was pressed by a reporter if he thought his host, who was sitting about four inches away, was really “a fascist.”

How terribly awkward.

But before Mr. Mamdani could even get out one of his slick and diplomatic answers, the president jumped in to throw him a lifeline.

“That’s OK, you could just say, ‘Yes,’” Mr. Trump said, looking highly amused by the whole thing. He waved his hand, as if being called the worst term in the political dictionary was no big deal.

“OK, all right,” Mr. Mamdani said with a smile.

"is now considered one of the most effective debate rebuttals in U.S. political history."

nemesis? well, they were in DC right? so I'll use a DC reference.
Saying Socialism is the "ideological nemesis" of Capitalism would be like saying I'm the nemesis of Alexander Ovechkin in the game of hockey.

What are you basing the idea that Trump is a competent negotiator on?

He’s in a position he generally holds the stronger hand, and he leverages that. When he does not, or it’s complex he generally doesn’t score great victories via negotiation chops.

It’s like me claiming I’m a good negotiator because I can get kiddo to go to bed when he wants to stay up late, because I can just whip out my phone and disable his ability to play on his Xbox, do anything on his phone etc in perpetuity if he doesn’t play ball.

Mamdani said some nice things to Trump in private and Trump, as he does every time that happens, just rolls over.

Trump isn't a master negotiator, he just loves anyone who is willing to stroke his ego a little.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

He did a better job than the past 5 presidents of getting Canada to begin to spend on military to protect its northern border. Trump got Canada to finally start enforcing the 49th parallel with at least a modicum of force. The FTA Trump eventually signs with Canada will be more favourable to this USA than any agreement since the first FTA in 1988.

There is 3 data points right off the top of my head.

EDIT: It took a while but eventually he got Canada to drop it's retaliatory tariffs. That's 4.

Relative to many previous presidents Trump has managed a plethora of massive concessions from the USA's #1 trading partner the last 100 years.
