By the way, I hope you can all stay safe and prosper. It's probably not all bad, but I seemingly wouldn't want to swap places at the moment. When you've landed a prominent position life is probably quite easy, but other social layers, well... Unless people live the American experience, it's hard to encapsulate it into words imo. It's definitely an experience. But if possible, experience it while being white. Any other hue of skin tone is probably not going to be enjoyable for people. /s
Everyone ready for Monday and the subsequent handover? I can't wait to see all of Kamala Harris's supporters storm the capital to prevent trump from taking office.

I know you're being facetious, but it's been a bit weird having Democrats insist this was the most important election of our lives to save democracy, only to behave like it's absolutely not once they lost (shitting on their own credibility).
I don't expect libs/Dems/their supporters to be able to stop the rise of fascism (I expect many of them to join in), but I did think they'd at least put on a show. There isn't even so much as a "#Resistance" going this time.

Even more perverse and ironic is three Mondays from now, when Trump's Inauguration Day is on the holiday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. What a slap in the face to MLK Jr.

At least the flags will be at half mast.

You mean besides Trump becoming president again? Can't realistically get much worse than that.

So are Democrats throwing out the 14th amendment/constitutional republic/rule of law or joining Republicans in pushing the idea that Trump and crew didn't attempt an insurrection?

I'd imagine they'd nonsensically claim that actually they are preserving the constitution and rule of law by certifying the election of an insurrectionist despite that clearly being unconstitutional.

Now that the VP certifying the results is ceremonial, it would be fun for Harris to refuse to certify the results on the basis of it being unconstitutional. Maybe tonight I should tweet out "Kamala Harris didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done."

Maybe tonight I should tweet out "Kamala Harris didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done." Democrats could have refused to certify the election of an insurrectionist (that said he'd be a Day 1 dictator). They chose not to. Ostensibly based on their retconning themselves into joining Republicans in arguing Trump didn't attempt an insurrection.
Harris is terrible in plenty of ways, but the party is who failed to do what should have been done, not Harris in her ceremonial role.
You know/knew this though and just thought you were being clever by strawmanning my criticism of the Democrat party failing to stop themselves from certifying an insurrectionist as President.

If I wasnt so lazy I'd dig back into the thread to find posts around Jan 6th, 'cause Im half certain I called them moving too slowly to deal with the insurrectionists and them basically completely evading justice because of it.

No actually I wasn't doing that... I was just comparing Harris's circumstances to Pence's in the context of the 2022 law making the VP certification ceremonial and Trump's famous tweet from that time.

Government employees sorta got screwed out of a paid day off with MLK day and inauguration day falling on the same day. However, the employees are getting Thursday off to mourn the death of Jimmy Carter.
So it ends up all even.
Trump is pushing back against reports by the WaPost that the scope of tariffs will be narrowed. According the the Trump camp it is full steam ahead on general tariffs on almost everything coming from outside the USA.

So he really does intend to tank our economy. Neat.
Unless he's lying, which is always a possibility for Trump.

Unless he's lying, which is always a possibility for Trump. Great point, politicians didn't start lying until 2016... which makes Trump even more horrible. Trump invented lying. American politicians always fought for truth, justice and the American Way until Trump came along.
What exactly do you mean by "tank"? Is the economy going to contract by 10%? Or is this just maudlin rhetoric? The smart people controlling many billions in assets are not behaving as though the economy will "tank."
The NYSE composite and most other major American indexes have done nuttin' since Trump was elected. It is hard to drive clicks, views, and engagement with such boring news. Yawn.
I think we're headed for a recession and Trump is not a factor. The indicators of an incoming recession occurred long before the next Prez got decided.
A negative 10-2 spread has predicted every recession from 1955 to 2018, but has occurred 6-24 months before the recession occurring, and is thus seen as a far-leading indicator. The 10-2 spread reached a high of 2.91% in 2011, and went as low as -2.41% in 1980. https://ycharts.com/indicators/10_2_year_treasury_yield_spread
I'm not sure if you count a recession as a "tank" though. If Trump can head off this incoming recession... I'll be impressed.
Short term, I think the US economy is in a bad spot. Long term, I like the position the USA is in.
