I've probably watched most(80-90%) of movies recommended in the normal TL movie threads. I'm looking for foreign films now that are good. Anyone have recommendations?

Examples of stuff I've seen and I consider good are Life is Beautiful(italian), Amelie(french), Old Boy(korean), My Sassy Girl(korean), Memories of a Murder(korean),Not One Less(chinese),Brother(korean) etc etc.

Definitely Cidade de Deus (2002) (City of God)
Dalkomhan insaeng (2005) (A Bittersweet Life)
- An action movie with similarities to OldBoy.
Taegukgi (2004) (Brotherhood of War)
- Very good Korean war movie.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005)
- 2 Good action movies from the director of OldBoy.
Banlieu 13 (2004)
- French parkour action movie with parkour star David Belle.

I didn't like taeguki at all and i usually like all korean movies -_-.

korean movies i suggest.

1. JSA (Joint Security Zone).
2. Friends.
3. Windstruck (Proquel to My sassy girl). But the story is completly unrelated. I consider this a chick's movie.
4. Sex is zero.

pusher is a great movie... simply great

i want to ask something to all you "foreign cinemas" experts
i remember a movie, i think it was russian from late '90s but i totally cant remember the title
this movie was about a young girl in moscow, maybe she was 15-16...
her mother left'em to an haunt to go to some cool place (U.S.?) with her new boyfriend
this haunt threat her very bad, like a sort of cinderella, so this girl just escape and hang around in that ghetto with her younger friend... a 10yrs old (or something similar) guy, this young guy love her
at a certain point this young guy got an overdose and died, he will appear to her in form of an angel

so this girl left alone, without family, money and stuff, found a boyfriend : a cool swedish boy with big car that promise her to bring her to sweden and married her...
well of course she agreed and go with him, everything seems so sadly romantic and drivin to an happy end but, when they arrive to his city, he make her a prostitute and basically she become his slave
she's locked in a small appartament and taked out only to be screw from some old fat man violently... at the end of the movie, she escape from this appartament and (again) while it seems to go to a great happy end, she realize, she half naked, with no money, with no friends, with no family, with no id or passport, in a foreign country and so on... so she jump off from a roof.
"The end"

now this movie, here in italy was named with a russian female name, something like "ninotchka" or something (but daaaaaaaaamn i can't even remember that name)

help me found that title, and honestly once we found out that title, watch this smart and great movie ...
pusher and this are two of the best movies i ever seen

EDIT: OMG I found it

"Lilja forever"

Battle Royale 2 is soooo much funnier.

The plot makes no sense, and half way through, it turns into an anti-American film.

Pusher, a Danish movie about a drug dealer. Definitely on my top3 list. Very realistic from start to finish, great actors and a very good storyline. The sequel was no good but the original is a fantastic movie - get it now!

don't forget "The Road Home"!! Boxer's favorite movie!!! ^_^ The Chinese name actually translates directly into "My Father and Mother", but I suppose they made it into "The Road Home" because in chinese, saying mother and father has a bit of returning to culture vibe whereas in english, it doesn't, so they messed with the title pretty hard imho...

my sassy girl is my all time favorite.
i didn't like windstruck though..hmm.

some other korean films i'd suggest are silmido, and if you have the time to watch it, one of the greatest (or people say, the greatest) korean drama, the sandglass aka 모래시계.

Jean Luc Godard's movies are so lovable, so spontanous and funny

Some examples:
Bande à Part (Band of outsiders)
Vivre Sa Vie
and my favourite Godard : Pierrot Le Fou aka Crazy Pete

Search for clips from these movies on youtube, some great scenes

Personally I thought Der Untergang was boring and took its script right off of any of the dozen books about Hitler's Last Days. Add this to the fact that one of the primary sources its supposed to be based on, Fest's Inside Hitler's Bunker was not much more than a rehash of previously published material, you have a fairly mediocre story. The other major source, Traudl Junge's recently published autobiography was an exceptional and revealing book, but too little had been done with it. I also thought that the portrayal of Hitler in the film was off the mark. Hitler was basically portrayed as a sick and fatigued man in his final days, which is only a partially correct representation of what proved at times to be still a remarkably clear-functioning mind.

For comparison, I think The Bunker (1982) with Anthony Hopkins was a better movie on the subject.

i'd put another vote in for Volver. It's playing right now (with english subs) in those artsy movie theaters that dont give you student discounts. Hey.. you cant go wrong.. Penelope Cruz is in it!

Festen(english title: The Celebration) http://imdb.com/title/tt0154420/

One of the better danish movies.

And yes, of course Kurosawa.

Here are some Italian movies I really liked:
Il Gittardo
Morte A Venezia
Rocco e i suoi fratelli
La Dolce Vita
8 1/2

Italian fantastic/giallo:
Mario Bava: Black Sunday, Terrore Nello Spazio (first movie inspired by the novel that later inspired Ridley Scott's "Alien")
Lucio Fulci: The Beyond, Zombi 2
Dario Argento: Profondo Rosso, Phenomena, 4 mosche di velluto grigio (my favorite!)

You could also try out some Ingmar Bergman's movies, especially The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries.

Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.
