Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

Not sure if sarcastic, but BC Liberals renamed to BC United, then merged with the Conservative party in BC so.... Conservatives = Old BC Liberals as far as I'm concerned, just further right than they used to be. Federal Liberals never really had an analog in the BC provincial election.

Well, BC election just concluded yesterday, I think we're incredibly fortunate it was not any worse than it is. It's back to the power sharing thing the NDP had with the green party in 2017, 46 NDP, 45 conservative, 2 green.

I get that people vote out political parties, but the hatred of the BC NDP for things that are the doing of the Federal parties is kinda unwarranted. Hopefully the 4 years to come puts proportional representation of some sort back on the charts.

the NDP popular vote only fell by 3%

That 3% made a pretty big difference. NDP could've had a pretty comfortable majority if the Greens chose to not run candidates in a handful of ridings that were projected to be close.

https://electionsbcenr.blob.core.windows.net/electionsbcenr/Results_7097_GE-2024-10-19_Party.html

For example:
Riding Green NDP Conservative
Surrey-Guildford 791 8,569 8,671
Courtenay-Comox 6,988 12,915 13,146
The majority of Greens would rather their vote go to NDP over Conservative, but vote split means Conservatives get seats here.

Worked out great for the Greens since it's 2017 all over again where they have power in the legislature. From a cynical standpoint, the result is the same as if BC had proportional representation. NDP has a slim minority, with Green holding balance of power.

Edit::
FWIW, the BC conservatives didn't have a platform until 3 days before the election and the costing was impossibly optimistic (5.4% GDP Growth, does not include major infrastructure promises like hospitals), and was still an 11B projected deficit (More than double the NDP/Green platforms which were actually costed nearer to reality)

There were other vote splits that worked out for the NDP. For instance, a number of incumbent independents who were pissed off BC Liberals that ran again- not enough to win, but certainly siphoned off votes.

And yeah, BC Liberals had no connection to the federal Liberals (despite the low information voters' confusion on the matter.) They were always a fiscal centre-right alliance that grew out of the collapse of the old SoCreds. BC NDP had as much in common with pre-Trudeau Liberals as for instance Ujjal Dosanjh went from NDP premier in BC to federal Liberal minister under Paul Martin.

I think an NDP minority supported by the Greens is likely the best result. The BC Conservatives need more time to consolidate and continue to redefine who they are. They were out in the wilderlands for far too long with a number very fringe candidates. Rudstad taking over and the collapse of the BC Liberals has helped to moderate them a bit... Rudstad took that opportunity to remove that G5 is Genocide candidate, for instance. But I suspect there are still a number of yahoos that need to be purged from the party so that we have healthy centre left vs centre right voting options in BC though the new Conservatives will likely still end up being more unapologetically conservative compared to the old BC Liberals.

This is hilarious and sad at the same time.
https://financialpost.com/fp-work/canadians-moonlighting-company-time
I did this. I did not need the money to pay my bills though. I did it so I could start my own company.

I built a report writer add-on tool in C# that imitated "Stonefield Reports" almost 90% while I worked at a job supporting and adding new features to the current "Stonefield Reports" made in Visual Foxpro. Back in 2006 I worked for a place known as a "VAR". Value Added Reseller. I am not even sure if that term exists today. Anyhow , after I graduated in 2010 I started selling the Report Writer... at the time it worked great with Procura. I had Procura's customer/client list.

The door to working a second job during company time could swing open even further, according to the report. Almost 40 per cent of job seekers say they would work a side hustle on company time if they thought they could get away with it.

If you are in the "information economy" and you position yourself correctly you are always doing this. That is, even if you are not technically working a 2nd gig that makes money today you are constantly prepping for your next job. You are always acquiring new skills for your next job. You are always positioning yourself within the company you currently work to place your fair market value in the open job market as high as possible.

It is kinda sad that so many Canadians have to work two jobs to make ends meet these days. Bosses in Canada have the power to get away with murder because the job market is so bad. Unions won't fix it. A better job market fixes this issue. Only very smarter leaders can open up an environment giving rise to a great job market.

Nothing makes bosses back off more than the threat that half their staff could leave for better paying jobs next month.

Canadian workers deserve leaders of the level of Ed Broadbent, Bob Rae and Buzz Hargrove. Not this guy...

Rather than secure the best deal possible for workers this guy is distracting union members with meaningless drivel.

Dude quit yapping and show the workers the money.

In Canada, it is not about being a patriot. Canada is the first postnational state and the proper destination for its children is that of "World Citizen".

According to the current PM, who is never in Canada, Canada is the first postnational state. There are no borders.. there is no defined culture and there is no patriotism. That is right from Justin Trudeau.

From an intellectual perspective ... Canadians are the children of Pierre Elliott Trudeau's vision of Canada.

In Canada, evolving into a "world citizen" is a proud accomplishment.

Massive urban//non-urban voting differences in the Ontario, Quebec and BC elections indicate big city people live different lives.

If I lived in Toronto I'd be barely getting by. Instead, I live 75 minutes away from Toronto and 30 minutes north of Buffalo, New York and live like a king.

Well, counting of late-mail/absentee ballots is in progress now:
https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/1ge7swe/ballot_count_differences_in_the_closest_ridings/

NDP have now locked in a minority government, but there's a chance of gaining a majority (47/93 seats). Current lead in the Surrey-Guildford riding has changed from -12, -9, -4, +14, +9, +18 for NDP as counts have come in, so NDP will likely gain the majority now. Two more updates to go before the end of the day.

Fundamentally NDP and Greens agree on many things. It's 47 + 2ish or most issues. Slim majority is still a majority.

There might be a few issues where whipping is necessary, but my suspicion is that we'll get a Green party member as speaker.

The leader can't be a power broker when 1 case of conjunctivitis and a pissed off back bencher wrecks the castle he is building in the sand. They can prolly pass stuff 1 piece of legislation at a time. No long term vision is possible though. Your regular run of the mill MP/MPP is not afraid of the leader.

Fear is great for empire building

OK, its October 29. The PQ made a lot of threats if Trudeau didn't quit by this date. Let's see if they pull the trigger. I'm surprised Trudeau didn't quit.

https://montrealgazette.com/opinion/columnists/robert-libman-bloc-quebecois-has-put-itself-in-a-bind-with-ultimatum-to-liberals
If Trudeau pulls the covers back from Blanchet anyway, I suspect that Singh, notwithstanding his transparent theatrics with the agreement — and knowing how vulnerable he will also be in an election — somehow crawls back into bed and votes against any Liberal non-confidence motion.

The Justin Trudeau haters claim this is a never-before-seen abomination and a distortion of the democratic system. I think these people are a "prisoner of the moment". In 1988, the Canadians disapproved of the Canada/USA FTA. And the Conservatives won the 1988 election based on the FTA as the primary part of its platform. A Brian Mulroney government split the left wing vote between the NDP and Liberals. JT is doing the same thing today with several power players in Ottawa and Quebec City.
https://www.environicsinstitute.org/insights/insight-details/free-trade-wasn-t-just-mulroney-s-key-achievement---it-is-one-of-the-most-dramatic-public-opinion-turnarounds-in-canada-s-history

Like Mulroney... JT manages to wiggle into power as his failed opponents all end up resigning. In 1988, the failed John Turner quits, and, shockingly the new Liberal leader is very quietly pro Free Trade. LOL.

It is fascinating that Canadians were heavily pro Free Trade both BEFORE and AFTER the 1988 election. Ed Broadbent and John Turner both outperformed Brian Mulroney by convincing Canadians the Canada/USA FTA was bad. Mulroney, a guy who failed the bar exam twice, maintains a 2nd consecutive majority government. Meanwhile, 2 genius level guys who kicked Mulroney's ass on the campaign trail end up resigning in 1988.

Same shit... different decade guys.

I met Ed Broadbent in person at a Deli in Toronto. I asked him, "hello sir... are you Ed Broadbent?"... without skipping a beat he said "No, I'm Joe Clark". I am very glad I met him while he was still at the peak of his capabilities years before he died.

There used to be so many geniuses running this country. SIGH.

Here is a fascinating case...
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/hijab-assault-charge-withdrawn-ottawa-1.7369868

Without seeing any of the footage my guess is that more than just "from the river to the sea" was said or chanted, and they told the victim if the evidence gets filed in court there is a risk we will need to charge you so they agreed to drop it.

This is interesting,
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-poilievre-election-1.7370930

Trudeau said his first response when encountering such displays was to wonder what had driven people to a "place of that much anger."

"the place of anger" is the lack of economic opportunity. This is exacerbated by the Liberals and all the mainstream media outlets that cover for the Liberals continue to spew out messages about how great everything is in Canada. The average working Canadian is getting absolutely crushed. It is almost impossible to be a parent in Canada. No surprise Canada recorded its lowest ever birth rate in 2023.

Lowest ever birth rate while the Liberals want to extend eligibility for MAID. Tragicomedy.
"O Brave New World... with such people in it...",

Unfortunately, I agree with Kevin O'Leary.

I continue to be surprised he did not resign before the Parti Quebecois October 29 deadline. Both of my parents are Canadian. All four of my Grandparents are Canadian. my father was one of 9 kids. my mother one of 3. I've got 1000 cousins. 90% are living in New York now.

It is a solution for hard working, ambitious, talented young people. It is a lot of work though far from an heroic accomplishment. There are also other places to go besides the USA.

A substantial portion of Canadians have not been in Canada very long. So its not as big of a deal to leave or to create options outside the country. Most people in Mississauga, Toronto, the GTA etc already have options outside the country.

OR you can sit around and whine as the country continues to decline.

This is hilarious.

"The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau," Trump posted on his site, Truth Social.

"Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!"

The post drew new international attention to the eye-popping political drama unfolding in Canada. To date, it has not been a top news item in the U.S., which is busy with a gusher of its own political news related to the presidential transition.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/trump-freeland-post-1.7412270

Freeland is an intellectual lightweight and should never have been more than an MP.
