Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

Thanks Justin

To be fair, neither does the Conservatives' finance critic. Pierre has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations.

Fair enough. Looks like Jim Flaherty (Harpers finance minister) didn't either.

Interested to see what Freeland's first budget is going to look like and how they plan on paying off CERB.

another 37B added to CERB which brings the total cost to about 300 billion

Kudos to previous regimes who were fiscally responsible thereby making the current spending spree viable.

Actually, they were not always responsible. Here is a comparison from the past few governments:

The CPC leadership has been an amusing dumpster fire. The ballot counting machine tore up a few thousand envelopes so they've had to recount or tape up ballots by hand which delayed the announcement of the leader by a good five hours. First round ends with no winner. MacKay and O'Toole virtually neck and neck and Lewis better than expected.

MacKay underperforming in Quebec and Ontario to O'Toole, and the pundits expect O'Toole to likely prevail.

It's O'Toole confirmed.

I thought Peter Mackay would have done better in the federal election.

Lewis winning SK came out of nowhere.

I can't imagine the odds on the Conservative Party surviving are very good right now. O'Toole winning seems like it won't play out well overall and party unity appears to be questionable at best. the PC Party wing of the Cons seem fed up with the Reform wing and vice versa.

The Conservative base is not the average Canadian. O'Toole is popular in places and with groups the Cons already do well with but he doesn't seem popular at all with basically anyone else. It seems like a Scheer situation all over again.

I thought with MacKay they would have a much better chance next time around.

I'll be curious to see how the polls shift now, if they do at all. I was expecting them to tighten up if MacKay won, but with O'Toole the polls may stay where they are. The Liberals appear to have stopped the bleeding of their support after the WE nonsense, and with the Conservatives picking the person most likely to send fence-sitting voters back to the Liberals, it seems like things might be basically back where they were a few months ago.

If the Conservatives want to win they need to show that they have moved on from the Harper era and can appeal to more moderate voters. In 2019 they showed that they had not worked on either of those problems yet, and current signs suggest they still haven't.

Agreed with above. I don't see the Conservatives picking up any steam off of this. With MacKay, they'd get some popularity/name recognition outside of the already strong cons areas. I haven't heard of O'Toole til he got announced as the winner.

My ideal government is a non-scandalous Liberal Minority with NDP holding the balance of power. If Trudeau resigned and Freeland took the reins, I'd be quite happy to continue voting Liberal (My riding is split cons/lib about equally). In general, Liberal policies have been measured and reasonable, especially internationally. Not quite happy with the China situation, but that's a big bear to poke. Stuff like WE really hurts though, having conflict of interest after conflict of interest in the Prime Minister's office is tearing the polished veneer Trudeau likes to present.

If the standard of living of Canadians rises substantially i don't much care if a guy like Chretien skims a few hundred million off the top.

Well, good stewardship is short lived. 3/4 years down, and a snap election during a pandemic.

https://vancouversun.com/news/politics/bc-election/b-c-election-premier-horgan-to-call-snap-election-today-voting-date-set-for-oct-24

Snap election called in BC, scheduled for Oct. 24. If one had not been called, it would've been Oct. 16, 2021, presumably well after availability and distribution of vaccines.
Not sure who to vote for. The NDP has steered us pretty well so far, despite the rise in cases, but a lot of that is tempered by the Greens who hold the balance of power. It's hard to say what they'd do with a majority gov't.

The NDP has held a double digit lead over the Liberals in opinion polls since the pandemic began, and was already favoured before the pandemic. Calling a snap election right now is no doubt an unpopular move, but it would have to backfire very hard to wipe out the NDP's current popularity advantage.

I'm in the majority boat I think. I'm going to vote NDP in the election because they've done a fantastic job besides calling the snap election. I do think they're letting Covid run up a little bit too far right now, and we pretty desperately need heavier enforcement because Bonnie Henry's nice doctor approach started wearing thin with the younger crowd around July. We were doing amazing before that though.

any spending spree Justin's liberals go on .. is made easier by the fiscal responsibility and restraint practised by the Mulroney, Chretien, Martin and Harper regimes.

It is September 28th.....
48 years ago Paul Henderson scored the biggest goal in the history of hockey....
Although Paul Henderson scored many big goals... Phil Esposito was the leader of the team.

The USSR is a communist country with everything state controlled. Canada is a capitalist country. The games int he USSR featured advertising all over the boards. No ads on the boards in Canada though. An interesting contradiction.

here is an interesting look at that series.
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/the-story-of-the-summit-series-as-its-never-been-told-before/article4546471/

Here's where you have to start: 1968, in Rossland, B.C. Pierre Trudeau is on the campaign trail and says, "If I'm elected, I'm going to take a look at sport, because I can't figure out why we're not doing well in international hockey." So he gets elected and sets up a task force to study sport. And out of that came the creation of Hockey Canada. And the mandate of Hockey Canada was to run the national team.

it would be another 34 years before Canada would win an olympic gold medal , that is, two years after P.E.T.'s death. Brilliant move by Pierre Trudeau to support hockey in his '68 campaign. It seems like an obvious move today.... in 1968 .. no other politicians seem to bring it up. Pierre as brilliant as he was.. was also in touch with thoughts and wishes of "the average canadian"

Steven Paikin, my favourite leftie, put together another great show.

The Agenda had Jeff Rubin on talking about his book "The Expendables".

It is a crying shame they turned off the comments on youtube for this segment. It is a fascinating subject. "The Annex" is Bloor & Spadina area.

I highly recommend his book...
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/617504/the-expendables-by-jeff-rubin/9780735279391

People need to stop relying on permanent, full time jobs as their primary income throughout their adult lives.

Rubin and Paikin bring up an interesting reversal in policy by Canada's major political parties over the last 30 years. The 1988 election's single biggest issue was the Canada-USA free trade agreement. The righties were in favour of free trade as a concept and in the concrete example of it with the Canada//USA FTA. The lefties were against the concept and against the Canada//USA FTA. Now, the policy positions are reversed.

i think its really cool that John Tory declared October 31, "John Candy Day". The guy was a genius.

this isn't too far from the level of discussion we get from Justin Trudeau these days...
