Also the French Prime Minister chipped in on it.

That's just the discourse in the media. There is an outrage because some newspapers didn't say that the 4 people who died in the shop were jews (like Liberation). Now some people are insisting on the fact that those people died because they were jew ("not anybody").

Wait, so you think it is a coincidence the terrorists targeted a Jewish store?

Valls is prime minister of israel in his mind, not France.
People dying to terrorists ? Non important, unless they are jews, in this case it's a national cause. This guy makes more to create anti semitic people than...I don't know what, but he's pretty good at making people hate jews. He submitted to every israeli lobbies that want to spread fear at the jew population so they move in israel, god how can this guy be our prime minister, it's like mullah Omar being prime minister of USA or something, an enemy within.

I don't know about that, my guess the government is trying really hard to reassure french people, especially those targeted by terrorists. The wording was beyond clumsy though.

But if I was in charge, I think I would do the same, I really could not let another attack happening without doing my best to protect the people , so I would deploy military until things cool down. And it's not stupid to think that Synagogue could be targeted.

Now my hope is that anti muslims acts are contained, because right now there is 50 of those reported since the attack. And if it blows out of proportion, then we will have what the terrorists wanted: high tensions between french people on a matter of faith.

If the same spirit of unity remains, my hope is that the far right won't even benefit from all this. I think french people woke up from a 40 years old sleep. They opened one eye at least. Truth is, french people live best together when they have a greater cause to rally for.

On another matter, I read that the american are very embarrassed they didn't send someone of higher profile to the rally. That Obama realised he probably should have come himself, or you know at least send John Kerry. I find it funny how they misjudge the size and the importance of the event. I blame cultural differences, because everyone here felt and knew it would be huge. Do you guys have thoughts on that?

No, because they were jewish : more specifically because the state and some politicians constantly made a distinction between the jewish community and the rest of France since some years now, but even more lately, thus making them target of everything and everyone (from the muslim extremist, to the far right).

"If 100,000 French people of Spanish origin were to leave, I would never say that France is not France anymore. But if 100,000 Jews leave, France will no longer be France. The French Republic will be judged a failure".

Meanwhile, half muslim believe most french think France would be better without them. That's how you create hate.

I have to agree. The only community french people should be designed by in public is ... the french one. Religion, origins, etc, belongs to the private sphere.

Are French people upset about the US Attorney General Eric Holder or Obama not coming to the rally while he was in France?

I feel inclined to ask since it seems to be more talked about than the rally itself in the US?

no one noticed the missing of the lack of a high caliber US representative at first in the french media

when i saw the photo of the worlds leaders, personally, the lack of the US representative didn't hit me at all

i think it's more because we had in mind that i was heavily european focused event

otherwise i agree with what have been said above, manuel valls is hurting a lot the nation when he put on stage the jewish community like it was the "special" one in france
i blame in the same way the muslim representative that wanted to make something out of the death of the policeman ahmed, because he was muslim

laicité has been thrown under the bus since a long times to buy social peace, because politicians give too much credit (especially hollande) to the different religion, for example by inviting their supposed representative to the elysee palace

media are also a big part of the problem, giving too much credit to x imam from x mosquee of y city in their talk show or whatever religion

No, french people are not upset about it. They would have cared for Obama, Hillary and / or Bill Clinton or John Kerry. The fact that US missed the rendez-vous is more a subject of disappointment or mockery than anger and spite.

yeah, but that's more a testimony of your media/pundits making a shitshow out of it...

on more local (Austrian) news, we had a rather big rally over here.

12k people - which is A LOT for something happening outside of Austria - and Austrians are the opposite of french people when it comes do demonstrating. but special circumstances and all, so definitely a good thing and understandable.

we had intellectuals/actors (theater) reading for example gotthold ephraim lessing's with the ring parable etc.

however, at that rally there was no specific mentioning of the jewish victims - just victims in a general sense, which was promptly criticized by the IKG (jewish society making it their goal to support "jewish life" and generally criticize everything antisemitic - but also what they perceive at anti-jewish...)

at first I was like yeah kind of typical... but thinking a bit about - with all the historic guilt ballasted it would have been the right thing to mention them separately.

Yeah, I get the overwhelming impression that this was a way bigger deal to the American media than it was to "the world we offended".

Any excuse to shit on and/or just talk about Obama is all any news outlet can ever hope for.

I do admit it seemed kind of odd not to have at least some highish profile person there, but anyone who thinks Obama himself should have been there is nuts. That would be like the secret service's most horrific nightmare.

Well they did have a bit of a distance but Kerry being there should of been a no-brainer.

The White House admitted that they should've sent someone more high profile and apologized. John Kerry will be there soon. 36 hours not enough time for their security measures, which I think is completely understandable.

well, given the recent failure of said security measures in and around the white house... :p

also if the security is good enough for 50 other heads of state/prime ministers - including Merkel, Hollande, Netanjahu(!) and Abbas etc... the argument for security is more like an American eccentricity than anything else to be honest.

Funny that CBC had an article on where was Obama. . . and yet no Harper to be found just the same.
