Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action. |
On average, yeah, the few Hungarians I interacted with are pretty conservative and the 16 years of propaganda definitely took toll there.
On the other hand, I believe that most Hungarians still support EU and approve of it at a much higher rate then they do, as an example, Russia.
The only thing I'm looking for from this elections is for Madyar to be more pro EU, he doesn't even have to be a Ukraine supporter but he can at least not block stuff and stop Hungary from being obstructionist.
He seems younger and not aligned with the authoritarian axis, so I do believe, despite him being a product of Orban's party that he can do a nice turnaround, pull back the levers of propaganda and let Hungary be a more normal country.

If Hungarians screw the pooch with this election, I think it's time to seriously consider kicking them out of the EU. Orban has committed what amount to treason with regards to Russia.

Just to have another Serbia around ? He's in a difficult position both neighbouring Ukraine and getting gas from Russia. Just his country's not going to make a big difference.

I don't get why we have to be negative. EU is clearly not allowing Serbia in as long as Vučić is it's leader. Serbia as currently aligned won't join the EU, at the very least, while it's spending on military like a drunken sailor and threatening Croatia, Croatia will simply veto it.
Orban being out is a good thing, first good political news in a while and I personally believe that should be celebrated instead of trying to find issues with it.

The EU is there to help transition away if needed.
No Orban chose to be a wannabe dictator accepting support from Russia to maintain his position in exchange for ratfucking the EU on behalf of Putin. He's no victim.

Let's keep this up boys
Greens win by-election to replace jailed councillor
The Green Party has won a Kent County Council by-election, which was called after the serving councillor was jailed.
Daniel Taylor, 35, from Margate, was given a 12-month prison sentence in February after he admitted to behaving in a controlling or coercive way towards his wife.
Reform suspended the councillor shortly after he won the Cliftonville division for the party at the local elections in 2025. He sat as an independent until his sentencing.
Voters cast their ballots on Thursday to select Taylor's replacement, giving the Greens' Rob Yates nearly 39% of the vote.
Yates, 39, is an offshore wind farmer and is currently a Thanet District Council member.
Of his victory, he said: "This result shows that across Kent and across the country the Greens are the antidote to Reform."
Green gain from Reform. Greens at 39, Reform at 33, Labour at 10 (and Tories at 15). This is just a council seat, again it doesn't matter on its own, but it's another place where "Only Labour can beat Reform here", according to Dame Emily Thornberry in this case but more generally to people who think the US Dems are a good example to follow. Hopefully the wave keeps going.

Seems like Hungary is heading for record turnout, which I assume is good news. High turnout usually favors the opposition.
Wonder if Orban will be on a plane to Russia before the end of the day.
|
In my opinion there are two realistic scenarios and neither involve Orban escaping the country.
One, the opposition wins and is serious about European priniciples. Unfortunately years of degradation mean the courts and other non-legislative institutions are stacked with Orban's buddies. They will keep sabotaging everything and the new government won't be able to enact any serious changes before the second election, which will be very hard to win in such an unfair environment.
Two, Magyar is actually Orban 2.0. Orban's buddies see that and force Orban to retire in exchange for immunity. Nothing changes in the long run.

Orban congratulated to the opposition leader Peter Magyar.
Der Krieg ist verloren. From Orban’s perspective.

A Tisza supermajority appears to be within reach, which is a vital first step to pruning all the institutional rot from what I've read. As a non-Hungarian and non-European, I'm pleased to see Orban finally removed from power. He's been a leader in the illiberal democracy model he helped create and promote to the world.

They will have to go the polish way to reestablish a functioning democracy and unroot the damage done those last years. It’s going to take a while.

Fun Fact: Hungary might do the funniest thing and elect a guy who is named Peter Hungarian. Péter Magyar to be exact. So something like the UK electing a guy called Johnny English?
I'm so glad to see Orban gone as he has been a continual block to EU's support to Ukraine. And then the US Vance sent out to 'support' the sinking Orban ship. What an amazing ally the US is to the EU...

I hope they send Vance to support the AfD during the next elections over here and the FN in France. That guy has the finger of death.

My favourite was the Belgian football team being managed by Dominico Tedesco Dominic the German who was… Italian. Not confusing at all, at least Peter Hungarian is simple.
Also lmao at Vance and also IIRC Trump going to bat so hard for Orban to seemingly no effect. Probably a slight negative if anything, get fucked.
Am I going senile or is this overt campaigning for candidates in foreign elections involving ostensible allies, something the US hasn’t tended to do in the semi-recent past? And us Euros or ANZACs tend to not do at the state level, much as the temptation is there
Perhaps I’m being bombarded with too much noise to accurately remember.

There’s the genesis of a plan there, get someone to butter Trump up, and he convinces Vance to apply the kiss of death for the greater good!
As shit as Trump is, he does occasionally get things done, and he has that strange Trump aura that sees people grudgingly tolerate his flouting of convention.
Vance is like his own kryptonite to the Superman he erroneously thinks of himself as. It’s really quite something to behold, you can almost record the loss as soon as you hear he’s been sent to do something.
He also doesn’t compliment Trump at all, he doesn’t round out his weaknesses, if anything he has the same ones but in a more pronounced way, or at least with less mitigation.
I mean I recall Bumbling Bush paired with Dick (emphasis on the dick) Cheney, or the slick operator (who happened to be black) paired with Biden’s Everyman blue collar shtick.
It’s fucking bizarre. I mean you’d probably want some kind of genial, personable statesman type to do damage control when Trump goes full bull in a china shop mode. Instead it’s like their plan for a 1-2 punch is to send in an even angrier, clumsier bull when the first one has done its thing.
