Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

Macron wants a European army because he's basically a federalist (though he hides it), he wants to found a European nation through more and more integration. For the upcoming European elections, he will campaign on the theme of "European sovereignty".

How does he hide it, I thought it was rather clear as day that Macron is in favor of more and more integration into the EU.

He's hiding it like he knows it's obvious but sees no reason to annoy dummies not as enthusiastic about the federalisation as him. I wouldn't call it "hiding", he's just not sabotaging himself like Schultz did when he called for United States of Europe.

Why do we call people that want a more centralised European Union "federalists"? Isn't federalism wanting a weaker central government and has been since the French revolution?

Think the context matters. Within France, federalists would want a federalized government rather than the centralized one they have. In other words, they'd want to decentralize power. Within the EU, a federalist would want to move towards a federated nation of Europe, or in other words, they'd actually want to centralize power. And to make things more complicated, you have things like some Catalan parties who want more independence from the Spanish government, but for the EU to have more power. I guess they are federalist cubed?

So; as France was commemorating the 3 years of the Paris terror attacks, the Washington bully opened fire on France and Macron:

Obviously, for the latter, the kid is mad... at the consequences of his own behaviour. He's also mad at this "European army" thing, and probably at Macron's speech 2 days ago, since his nationalism was clearly targeted. This is the same kind of reaction he had when he suddenly attacked Trudeau after the G7 summit.

The bully's main point is that he wants more European money for his imperialistic machine.

Those tweets also underline the failure of Macron's strategy, i.e. half cuddles, half critics. In the end the bully does not care about flattery or whatever you do to try to please him. He does not give a f*ck about the historical links between the USA and the West European nations, nor about the previous world order. He only sees "good deals" or "bad deals". For years Trump has been thinking that USA's "allies" have abused the US money, and now he wants them to pay. It's time that he receives the appropriate answer, i.e. a solid middle finger.

Unfortunately the European minions will probably just wait his defeat in 2 years and renew their allegiance to the US overlord once someone less brutal is back on the throne.

yes it simply depends on the direction. Independent states moving towards federal systems usually use the term analogous to centralisation, countries that move from unitary states to federal systems take it as analogous for decentralisation.

The last part you're mentioning has been dubbed the Europe of Regions and has in my opinion been underexplored. More centralisation at the European level to harmonise relationships and at the same time decentralisation at the regional level to fight nationalism is a very promising idea.

It could mean moving towards a Europe that is at the same time more capable and organised, but also is more autonomous. People who like city states and competition between regional governments used to advocate for the idea a lot.

The EU-US alliance has done a lot of good for both sides over its lifetime. Abandoning it because Trump is a moron is not smart.

It has shown that the EU needs to be more self sufficient because the US is not as reliable as we hoped, Trump can easily happen again.

"Make france great again" wth lol,it is getting more funny every day.

This seems like a fair conclusion. I would not count macron out though.
Trumps reaction to European army is only based on instinct it seems because macron did mention protect against usa as well. Why would trump not welcome a European army? It would be Europe who would pay for it and usa and Europe still share mostly the same interests. Maybe he is afraid it will go at the cost of europes spending on nato and American weaponry.

Macron not popular unfortunately,i do think he is a very good leader though. He is europes best hope to push the union forward right now I think, who else could/would do it?

It was discussed in the US pol thread. Most likely Trump thinks that NATO is other countries paying the US. not them maintaining their own army. To him an EU army means an alternative to them paying the US through NATO.

Who even knows what Trump thinks? The man changes his mind every 10 minutes if it suits him. I don't really think any strategy works. Trump called Xi a friend and he still started a trade war

Is there even a quote from Macron saying we need a European army to defend against the US? What I'm seeing is he said we need a European army; and that we need joint European cyber defense against Russia, China, the US. Is everyone here including Mr Trump just losing their minds over something Macron didn't say?

New figures about german economy,it shrank in last quarter. Which is somewhat worrying if you consider that the inflation in Germany is 2.5%. Is this quarter an outlier or the start of a recession in Germany?
Predictions for world gdp for coming years show quiet a bit of growth from which Germany should be able to benefit.

The main reason for trump (and America because it definitely is not only trump who is considering this point) to be against a European army is that it would go at the cost of the American defence industry. A european army would buy European and not American.
Europe has been sponsoring the usa defence industry for decades, that is the other side of the medal that trump doesn't talk about in the whole paying for nato discussion.

Yes, but since when does Trump care about facts?

Just read in Austria media that Hollande is planning his comeback and that in retrospect the French people have grown to like him because of the contrast to Macron's authoritarian style.
@TheDwf: Any truth in this?

Never ever ever ever. Unless opportunistic, authoritarian politicians backed by the local oligarchy is your thing. Valls is a man of order for order, the kind of politician who would send cops to beat grandmas trying to vote on Catalunya's independence.
