Whats all this about Jon warging into Ghost? Jon doesnt have any idea how to even use his powers so I dont think he can do that. What the hell could he do as Ghost anyway? Run down to Winterfell and chew on Ramsay's balls? Talk to Bran?
I think Martin is just setting up the north to get owned by the Others. That's fine, that's what we've been waiting for. Im thinking they have the real horn and are going to knock the wall down, cause they cant technically get the wights through while its got all those enchantments... right? It would be really really fuckin lame if they get to the wall, cant get through and then Dany just comes with her dragons and breathes fire all over them and saves the day.
I really dont get where he is going with Bran. The only cool thing Bran can do is maybe warg into dragon. It sucks cause I really liked Bran and thought he was going to rip some shit up riding on bears with a wolf army or something. Now he just whispers at people through trees...
Why didnt Martin just get Tyrion to Dany? In my opinion it woulda saved the whole book. Too much bloody filler getting there, and Penny was just awful. Im glad Jorah is back cause the TV show really made me like him but I wish he fuckin killed Penny, or that Penny got the damn plague. If she sticks around next book and her and Tyrion start a relationship Im going to puke.
I thought some of the new characters chapters were bad. Anyone like Quentyn? I'll bet no. Asha was pretty lame too, only good part was when she got fucked. The only new one I liked was Victarion, but I only liked him cause I got a thing for pirates. Thought he was pretty badass, sucks hes going to get owned in Mereen and Dany is going to steal his boats.
Blah blah blah that's it for now. Maybe more ranting in the future haha. Fuckin show sucked me in and I wish it never did. I bet HBO is starting to kick themselves in the ass after they read this book. Some of this isnt going to be easy to reproduce well for TV without a huge budget.
Anyone know where whores go? Or any words that rhyme with Reek?
Those chpaters were great tbh. Just kinda forgot about them while ranting. I think everyone is enjoying the Arya chapters. I dont know where things are going with her. Im guessing she'll get some training and then go get her name back when she has a bit of skill. Bran will talk to her I think, bring her back. Ill be so fuckin happy when she kills Cersei.
Everyone thinks that this Robert Strong is the Hound eh? The traveling monk guy buried the Hound didnt he? And the mummers took the helm, so its just an unmarked grave now. I dont know how Qyburn would find it and then have someone resurrect him.

On August 05 2011 04:43 GGQ wrote: I think a lot of the problems/weaknesses in books 4 and 5 were owing to the time gap that Martin intended and then had to scrap. Much of the story in these two books was never intended to be told except in flashbacks. The wikipedia article has the following paragraph:
"After A Storm of Swords was completed in 2000, Martin began writing A Dance with Dragons, the intended fourth volume which would pick up the story five years after the previous volume. Martin found it difficult to make this work without an over-reliance on flashbacks. At the World Science Fiction Convention in Philadelphia on 1 September 2001, Martin announced that he was scrapping more than a year's work and writing a different fourth book that would fill in the gap, named A Feast for Crows. He found it extremely difficult to go back and start again, especially as this novel was not planned for in his scheme for the series, and work on the book progressed slowly."
It seemed like Dance really started to pick up after it caught up time-wise to the end of Feast and started moving forward into the stuff that Martin had meant to begin with after the time gap. In light of this, I'd expect the next two books to be of higher quality than the last two.
Alright, so I just finished Feast like a day or two ago. I havn't so much as ordered Dance, seen it, anything... So I don't want any spoilers. Except this one: Does he end up doing that time gap? The paragraph states that he wanted to skip 5 years into the future. Did he do so? I always felt like he should. The characters are just too young, and + Show Spoiler +
Arya isn't going to become a Faceless Man without years of training, Sam isn't going to become a maester without the same, etc, etc.
So I really don't want anything to be ruined for me, but I don't feel like a yes/no answer to this question will really do that.
Dance with Dragons begins where Storm of Swords left off then once you are like 600 pages in you start to read about events past the feast for crows. No time gap.
Interesting. Thanks for the asnwer. I hope that doesnt change the quality of the overall story. . . Having a giant master plan for all these years and then having to change it can really fuck shit up.

Yes, Robert Strong seems to be the Mountain, not the Hound. Also, the monk who told Brienne that he buried the Hound used very specific wording. He said that the Hound was dead, and that Sandor Clegane was at peace. Brienne also notices a hooded novice at the monastery who walks with a limp. This seems to be a hint that Sandor Clegane gave up the sword and has joined the church. The monk was just trying to protect him from Brienne.

I'm majorly enjoying Arya's storyline, so you're not alone there. She's being set up to be such a total badass.
Jon has been my favorite character for a long time. The prospect of him being dead really upsets me. I agree with what some others have said about "resurrecting him cheapeans the story", but I'm also struggling to think of how Martin resolves the whole issue of the North without him.
My biggest dilemma: I don't know wtf to read now. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was really starting to get into the atmosphere of Dance, so I'd love to pick up something with a similar setting/fantasy backdrop.
I cannot make myself root for Arya anymore. Not if she becomes the faceless assassin. No, she will not be badass, you need to have a personality to be badass. Religious fanatics are not badass, they are just morons. And faceless are even worse because they are a group of brainwashed idiots that think they represent a God while they use only parlor tricks and some glamors. Similar to most of real world religions. Martin got them right in that regard. Bran with Old Gods, and Mel with God of Light are much more interesting characters.
The parts with Arya seemed to go out of their way to indicate that Arya is not going to lose her identity or personality. She's far too stubborn and willful to become a faceless one. As for the various gods, I'm of the opinion that no gods actually exist in Martin's world. There's magic, certainly, but that magic doesn't have to originate from any gods; people just invent them as the origins, to explain it. For example, the old gods are actually greenseers speaking/seeing through the trees (loved the sudden appearance of Bloodraven, never expected that). Theon thinks he's communicating with the Old Gods through the weirwood at Winterfell, but it's actually Bran. Melisandre's Red God has more evidence seeming to point to his being a real god, but it's quite possible for the magic to have its own existence/origin and the god being invented just to explain it and turn it into an organised religion. Maybe Benerro (or whatever the high priest in Volantis is named) is just a high level con man? You never know.

All my sources seem to indicate that the time gap was planned to happen between the third and fourth book, back when the series was planned to be 5 books.

So then it's pretty much confirmed that there won't be any jump in time? That... sorta sucks. Maybe the dragons will find some super-grow potions or something.
That still leaves the possibility of books taking multiple years, though. Maybe that's what he'll do.
EDIT: Jesus christ, I didn't realize how much I missed. Though I don't completely blame myself because theres so much information given that is seemingly irrelivant. I've been reading random FAQ and shit on www.towerofthehand.com and am amazed at some of the shit people have mined out of htese books. This one in particular blew my fucking mind: http://towerofthehand.com/blog/2010/08/24_if_its_chains_you_want_/index.html
I suddenly know (or I think I do) why it is so important for Arya to be no one.
It suddenly makes AFFC a much, much better book. At least for me.

Incorrect, the second book in the originally planned trilogy would of been ACoK/ASoS. AFFC/DWD werent ever going to be a book but the aforementioned "5 year gap" that was always going to be flashbacks. And the final 2 books now planned would be the last book in the originally planned trilogy.
Hopefully that makes the final two books as action packed as the first three. I loved Feast (especially 2nd time around) and Dance, but they don't move the story on fast enough for my liking .
FUCK THE LANNISTERS AND FUCK THE FREYS...they just killed rob and catelyn...I'm in shock. First ma nigga ned, now rob...the only character I like is tyrion and he's still a lannister above all. So basically, after everything, all the wars and the kings it boils down to the fucking lannisters and that evil joffrey winning. I never even liked dany and stannis has been defeated...omfg

lol dude, you're barley done the third book. Theres still FOUR more. Yes, there's a point in reading! You have to know how it ends! So far (I havn't read DwD so that one doesn't count) ASOS is the best book of the series. And you're halfway.
You saying you don't like Jon or Arya? Those two and Tyrion are the best characters! They still have their stories. And so many other characters. . .
Just channel the anger at hatred towards the Freys. =P
FUCK THE LANNISTERS AND FUCK THE FREYS...they just killed rob and catelyn...I'm in shock. First ma nigga ned, now rob...the only character I like is tyrion and he's still a lannister above all. Is there any point in reading further? This series has been so amazing but I just can't believe GRRM would do this.

lol keep reading. You'll like the next wedding a lot better.
GRRM has an interesting interview with authors@google. Manages to avoid any spoilers (apart from the first book and the series, if you you haven't seen the series or read the first book DO NOT WATCH.)
Edit: at about 44 minutes he talks about the weddings in ASoS, definitely a highlight.
Book 3 Spoiler (just incase) - Sorry for language, book is too awesome. + Show Spoiler +
Daenerys was trying to buy the unsullied and had just agreed to trade all of the ships and Drogon and I'm like "... what the fuck are you kidding me? He's a fucking dragon, what the fuck man this blows dick *rageragerage*" then she fucking finishes the trade and I'm like "ooh, you know what would be hilarious, if she killed off all the fuckers and stole the army". And then it describes how shes bringing all her guys with her and I'm like "oohhhh shit, she might do it". And it gets closer to the point, she makes sure that the unsullied are her slaves and will only listen and obey her and I'm like "OH SHIT, LOVE THIS BOOK" and then Drogon burns the dude alive and I just explode with happiness.
So yeah, Jon dying was a pretty shitty cliffhanger. I doubt he's going to get revived, the north will probably end up getting fucked over with wildlings slaughtering all of the nights watch and then marching on the boltons coming up north to attack them. I'm not actually sure what happened to spark the death? The giant got attacked by a queen's guard and that's it?
Not sure if stannis is really dead, hopefully will find out in the next book. Also would be nice to find out what happened with Mance and Theon.
I'm not sure why Tyrion said that Aegon going to Westeros was a trap, anyone care to fill me in? Also the Tyrion story line got boring as fuck after he got carried away by Jorah
Danerys storyline doesn't make much sense. She apparently already tamed Drogon but still can't fly to Meereen because Drogon doesn't want to? Whatever, I'm thinking she kills the Khal and returns to Meereen with an army. I'm pretty sure Barristan is gonna die soon.
Also, I'm a bit confused on how Arya killed her target? She gave him a coin and his heart fails? Not sure.
IMO the book started out great but around 10 chapters in it got dull and then when shit finally started happening in the last few chapters it ended too soon.
The man she was targeting tasted the coins he recieved to make sure they weren't counterfeit - she probably just put an oral poison on one that caused heart failure.
Would it be plausible if Jon returned as an Other?
There is a tiny bit of foreshadowing, things like the unaddressed corpses in the prison, along with his reflection on how the Walkers retain some of their former knowledge (from the initial attackers knowing where Mormont's quarters were), but I'd say a warg appearance is far more likely.
