EDIT #1: Nevermind, Gelfand's pawn wasn't trapped at all. Still, he's on the defense though. EDIT #2: Carlsen just gave a perpetual check in a position where he was a Knight down.

edit: if Carlsen draws this after Nakamura's d6, this will be an incredible blow to Nakamura psychologically.

edit: still, it's not completely impossible this may end in a draw, in case Magnus makes one mistake (however unlikely that may be) in the lines which seem winning for him... fascinating game!

After Qe3+ Kf1 nf6 Rg7+ Kh8 Qf3 Bxh3 wins a queen (N-g6+ fxg6 R-g8 RxRg8 wins for black) After Qxf2 Kxf2 fxg6+ Q-f3 RxQ+ KxR is about even in fact whites up a pawn somebody check on a chess engine would be pretty embarrassing to be wrong on your own chess puzzle lol

The engine gives Qf2+ as equal and Qe3+ as +1.0 for White. I had this in a blitz game and played Qe3+ of course, only found out afterwards. How does one ever see stuff like that in a game? If it's a puzzle it's always easier, because you know you have to consider weird looking moves.

Qe3+ K-d1 N-f6 Rxf6 Q-g1+ doesnt seem to work either in any case both you and wingpawn seem to be wrong because white ends up a pawn up and not a rook down edit 2: Qe3+ K-d1 N-f6 Rxf6 Q-g1+ K-e2 Q-e3+ seems to draw for black probably the best play

Your suggestion 1...Qf2+ 2. Kxf2 (2. Kd1 Qf1#) fxg6+ 3. Qf3 Rxf3+ 4. Kxf3 indeed allows White to fight on, but since b2 and h6 pawns are both hanging, there won't be any material advantage for White at all. But yeah, it's still anybody's game...

the endgame after Qf2+ KxQ fxg6 Q-f3 RxQ KxR N-f6 N-c6 Bxh6 K-g2 should be white favoured but the engine says equal which is weird ot me can you play a few lines with it? On February 02 2014 22:31 wingpawn wrote: if you play 1...Nf6 (either immediately or after 1...Qe3+), White has 2. Rg7+ Kh8 3. Ng6+ fxg6 4. Qxg6 and the threat of 5. Rh7+ Nxh7 6. Qg7 checkmate seems unstoppable (no engine used here, but it looks dreadful for Black). Your suggestion 1...Qf2+ 2. Kxf2 (2. Kd1 Qf1#) fxg6+ 3. Qf3 Rxf3+ 4. But yeah, it's still anybody's game... yeah I made a mistake with Nf6 not working as well without the discovered checkmate (lol) White is actually up 2 pawns if im counting right so you're still up 1 pawn in any case Howevre after Nf6 R-g7+ K-h8 N-g6+ fxg6 Qxg6 Q-f1+ has a chance of perpetual (nvm white is safe on a2, but you can play Qxh6 wheee)

This is the position after your line 1...Qe3+ 2. Kd1 Nf6 3. Rg7+ Kh8 4. Ng6+ fxg6 5. Qxg6: ![]() Black can just take on h6 and is winning.

What's the consensus after 2...Nf6 then? RxNf6 and just go for perpetual? Also turns out aftre Q-e3+ K-f1 Nf6 Rxf6 Bxh3+ can be blocked with N-g2 and After R-g8 R-f2 white can possibly hold I just found Qxh3! though, which leads to another perpetual since Ng2 leaves the queen hanging.
