We had a chess thread here in TL O_O?

Greetings to all chess players and fans out there.

In that position, doesn't Qf2+ save black?

1.... Qf2+
2. Kxf2 (2.Kd1?? Qf1++) fxg6+
3. Qf3 Rxf3+
4. Nxf3 Bxb2
5. Ra2 Bd4+

and Black survives.

As mentioned by wingpawn, after Qe3+ king goes to d1 and Black has no more checks.
The engine gives Qf2+ as equal and Qe3+ as +1.0 for White.
I had this in a blitz game and played Qe3+ of course, only found out afterwards.
How does one ever see stuff like that in a game?
If it's a puzzle it's always easier, because you know you have to consider weird looking moves.

Always look at the checks and forcing moves and you'll find stuff like this a lot more often.

How does one tell that a move is forcing and that they aren't just overlooking something?

checks/captures are "forcing moves"
check them from your opponents view also

Checks will always be the most forcing. For captures/threats, just gotta calculate.

Congratulations to Carlsen! Great performance in the classical chess tournament, and a new ELO record (2881).

He will break the 2900 mark I think. It will be hard, but it's doable.

Carlsen doesn't seem to be as good in rapid chess.
He lost to Caruana and Aronian and drew with Nakamura.

While you're probably mostly right, I think his result in the rapid was more anomolous than properly representative.

Magnus Carlsen's official youtube channel. I guess this was his big news.

Edit: Is there a way to link to the channel without generating an embedded video?

For some reason when I click the video and then the channel name, the URL in the navbar is still that of the video.

I'd watch out for Anish Giri as well when it comes to talented young players who can still improve.

Just registered for a small chess tournament coming up in March at a local chess club.
1st time playing OTB chess in many suns.
Got 1 month to improve .

Yeah, he's still one of the best rapid players in the world, though obviously "bad" compared to his dominance in classical chess.

Which is a little strange: there was a time when he was regularly using <30 minutes to his first time control in supertournaments and beating some of the best players in the world.

Every time I see Carlsen's face my first reaction is that he is the person who owns Naka's soul.

Time controls are a funny thing. I'm pretty bad at blitz, but in time trouble in a classical length game I'm really strong. No idea why.

magnus probably needs to get a feel for positions and using other players time is a great way to do that and then just calculating variations in his own time.

in time trouble you have thought a lot about the position and warmed up your brain kinda so you can move real fast.
