But nah, stop the presses, a 96-year-old is going to die. She has been Queen longer than most people have been alive. She's seen the rise and fall of UK as the global superpower, and the coming and going of tens of governments. The current one is just a blip on her decades of rule. I have dozens of portraits of her within a couple meters of me(cash/coin), and probably thousands in my building alone. I can't think of many people more iconic or newsworthy. May she rest in peace. Not to sound insensitive, but has she done anything impactful in recent decades? It seems to me that the royalty in the UK stays away from politics.

Not to be too crass but if I had to meet my country's new prime minister and it's Liz Truss, I'd also die

An apolitical anchor representing stability and continuity. Her job was to not really do anything.

Which is probably the best a Monarch can do. One can question whether you actually need a Monarch who does nothing, but a Monarch who does nothing is a lot better than a Monarch who does something.

It helps when you have such a chaotic system like British parliamentarianism that would potentially struggle with legitimacy if there wasn't such a force to anchor it in tradition and process like the monarch. An executive that is selected from 142k odd people to rule seems silly without context.

She was effectively a celebrity who managed to stay out of major scandals for a few decades, not a national leader.

I think to truly understand what she meant to the people you just have to be born and raised British. To us outsiders she was just a figurehead,

So do the poms have to change their national anthem now? Unless they consider Charles their Queen

They already changed it.

Unless they consider Charles their Queen Yeah They're going to have to re-record/relarn anthems across the globe now. Also change how they speak of every ship in their navies. Its "His Majesty's ship" now.

Will Elisabeth be the last royalty to deny their offspring marrying their true love?
I know she gave the approval to naming Camilla "queen consort" in the end, but she surely caused a mess permanently damaging the royal institution by initially shutting her out of the royal family for decades.
The Norwegian princess Martha will soon marry a self proclaimed "shaman" and modern a snake-oil salesman, and organisations are fleeing her "protection". Fortunately, she can't ever be queen.
Elisabeth was a major uniting figure holding the archaic celebshow together, but many of the younger generations are seeking out of forced careers and lifestyles, despite the privileges.
How long will the royal families prevail? Electing a person for ceremonial duties and representation like Finland and Iceland just seems better in every way.

I think that even if the monarchy was abolished and a president was instituted, it still wouldn't be an elected role. Most often, presidents in parliamentary systems are appointed.

It does vary but the Irish just elect theirs, seems to work fine.
David Attenborough as President until he kicks the bucket, not seeing many downsides there

I mean if one is utterly deluded, maybe?
At least Cameron had some of that ‘one nation’ Conservatism that at least tried to help average Joe/Jane, and elements of that persisted even through Boris. Sunak wasn’t entirely averse to such things either.
Truss is just like ‘fuck it, trickle down economics’ and not much else.
It’s not going to end well, and I’m at the stage I can’t enjoy the train wreck, coming as it does in a chain of train wrecks and at the point it really materially impacts on many of our lives.
|
I think Truss is not concerned about ever winning a general election. She will do whatever the Tory donors want - cut taxes, environmental protections, worker rights, ... - and then take a six-figure 'consultant' job.
|
Yep. It might be on me and what I've read, or the media coverage in wider, but at least I cannot even begin too see a vision of what she wants to do, how she intends to make the country better. Even BoJo had a vision, a stupid vision at that, but there was one. With Truss it seems like only stupid is left.
