From reading articles on BBC I think the main danger is someone makes a mistake, and it leads to military action. But besides that, North Korea *has* (relatively recently) shelled islands and killed a few people from South Korea if I remember correctly, so I don't think its unlikely that they would do something similar again; they don't seem to afraid of repercussions on the small scale at least. The question is how would the US and South Korea respond? And how much escalation would there be from that point? Just tangentially, because its an important historical reference (and I can't think of any others), if the war cabinet is as stubborn in North Korea as they were back in Japan, then that arrogance and delusion, combined with believing their own rhetoric, could lead to a pretty serious situation.
It is a very difficult situation, because how can the US justify not preparing for the insanity of North Korea through military drills? And yet those very drills are making the situation more dangerous. We just have to hope that shelling islands is the most North Korea is willing to do, and that there is no serious response from the US/South Korea that would justify further NK aggression. Honestly sometimes I think they should do a preemptive strike. Sure NK can do some shelling along the coastal line. But that's all they can do. They can't declared war at all. NK is just making noises like i said. Plus,China will never let NK declared war anyways. The only reason NK can go on for this long(making " noises ") is because of China friendship with NK. NK has tunnels that go into SK. We have no clue how deep they go but some of the tunnels are big enough that tanks and vehicles could traverse them. NK has nukes and they could, if they wanted to, hit Seoul with a nuke from the DMZ. If they wanted to they could kill a massive number of South Koreans before the US and others would be able to stop them. They have one of the largest militaries in the world and they have nuclear weaponry. Saying that all they're capable of is "shelling along the coastal line," is pretty naive. I would agree that they're probably just making noise but they've been prepping for war with South Korea since the end of the Korean War. I don't even understand your comment on China. North Korea routinely does things that China dislikes or wouldn't agree with. It's not like they have a very tight lease around North Korea. edit: Unless your post meant they couldn't really do anything to the US. In which case, yeah. But they likely wouldn't attack the United States they'd invade South Korea.
Nope. They can't attack SK?
Want to know why? You can't wage war if you don't have resources? Guess what? They don't have any? You think shooting nuclear missiles are cheap?
NK is a poor country.Everybody knows this. NK is just an attention seeker and that's why China is also pissed with them. China has been supplying resources to feed NK for a long time because of the friendship of Mao and Kim Il Sung in the past. These 2 people shared the same ideals(communist) and hence that's why China and NK are allied.
However,China is not a full Communist country. It is just a name. Politically wise,China is a Communist. But the irony is that their communist leadership structure is geared toward capitalist ends. China has already changed not like NK that has remain stagnant for the past few decades. China wants NK to change but NK is just freaking stubborn and want to stick to their ideals.
Bottom line is,N.Korea can't wage war. Plus, you think they can nuked Seoul? lol. US already knows NK nuclear launch site.through satellite.=.= They will know the moment NK wants to launch a nuclear bomb and they can intercept when it happens.

The U.S. will only get nuked if the powers that be want it to get nuked. My only concern is if NK was allowed to or even helped to carry out an attack. Otherwise no way in hell it ever happens.
Obama has no resolve to achieve the best for the USA, in fact, he probably hates it more than lil Kim does.
Do you have any doubt that if Obama found out NK had just nuked Austin, he'd perform the following actions in this order:
1) Grin 2) Call for a bottle of Visine 3) Call a photographer to capture a single "tear" he shed for Texas 4) Blame George Bush and Rick Perry for not keeping Texas safe. 5) Arrest the Texas GOP for failing to keep Texas safe 6) Destroy all evidence the he had, in fact, opened up Texas to the attack and given Kim the OK to launch it. 7) Declare martial law and deploy the MRAPs 8) Suspend all elections indefinitely 9) Start paying protection money to North Korea so they "wouldn't do it again". 10) Golf!

As for more serious matters...
For anyone that is interested in China's involvement, have a look at this.
"The satellite launch and subsequent nuclear test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have greatly increased the level of concern in the United States and its East Asian allies. A frequent response is to demand that China rein in its troublesome ally. There is a growing view in the West, now verging on consensus, that China holds the key to taming Pyongyang’s behavior and solving the crisis caused by the DPRK’s nuclear and missile programs. And there is mounting anger that the Chinese government seems unwilling to use its influence in a decisive manner."
"Beijing could end the North Korean nuclear crisis with a telephone call threatening to cut off aid... highly suspicious that Chinese officials were unwilling to make that call."
This article points out that China advised against the nuclear tests and that Pyongyang went ahead with the tests regardless of their allies concerns... That's pure propaganda. Chinas influence would have come into question again had they NOT spoken against the tests.
Link to realclearpolitics.com
China will use NK as a proxy to reduce the American military presence in the region, softening things up for their eventual conflict with Japan. It's also possible this serves Chinas interests with Iran.

north korea showing they're not afraid to fire the river barrel.
i think its quite clear that nk are just trying to extract concessions from us/sk. given that their responses so far have been lacklustre i'd say expect more bluffing. the real trouble is that if us/sk continue not to give a crap then nk might actually resort to some small scale provocation i.e. shelling an island which might result in an escalation.

Yes, but TL mods know all conspiracy theories aren't created equal. There's a big difference between a belief in the Bilderberg Group or some group like it, and believing that all of our leaders are reptilian shape-shifting overlords.
What can they do other than try to denounce the craziest ones that have no substance and stand only to derail the conversation?

That is not really a new idea. I think pretty much anyone knows that "Communism" has a double meaning at this point. On the one side, you have the pure Marxist Communism, and on the other side you have the stuff that countries who call themselves communist do. Those are two completely different things, but they are both called communism, and one is not necessarily more correct then the other. As long as everyone knows what is being talked about, this is only a problem for people who want to seem smart by saying that the countries which call themselves communist are not really following the doctrine laid out in the Communist Manifesto or similar works like that is a totally new insight.
Though at this point, stuff is getting even more complicated since now you got China which is again working on a totally different system when compared to Soviet Union "communists".
So basically, communism is badly defined at this point, live with it.

I find this to be quite contradictory, it is because of North Korea and it's unstable leadership that the US has so many troops in South Korea. If not for North Korea, one would assume that the number of US troops stationed in South Korea would be probably 1/3 or 1/4 of the number it currently has over there.

Yep, good point, he's pretty far from the truth. The navy has already declared a strategic shift to the south pacific over the next few years. NK is only going to draw more attention and military presence.
As for an 'eventual conflict with Japan'... yeah, don't think that's going to happen either. The Senkaku islands are a point of contention, and China is trying to flex its muscles by declaring ownership of the entire South China Sea. Having said that, I think China's actions are more likely posturing to have a greater influence and control over the region rather than setting the stage for some kind of conflict that will end in disaster.
