Not sure why so many people think games need to have storylines or great characters. They're games, not stories. Games are meant for fun and entertainment. They can tell a story, sure, and it can be a great story which you enjoy and makes the game as a whole more entertaining. But to penalize a game for not having something it's not even supposed to have, is ridiculous.
Rock Band was fun as hell, which is what games should be judged on.

Dang, no Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It's my 2nd fav game ever.
At first glance, it doesn't seem like that bad a list. Of course everyone's gonna disagree with it, we all have different tastes in games and there'll always be someone griping over something
I think they went for influential over fun in series. Mario, Castlevania, Contra and Mega Man for example weren't as good as some of the sequels, but then again I'm not sure why they'd choose Oblivion. I don't play Elder Scrolls but pretty much 100% of people who do agree that Morrowind is better AND it came out earlier
For Mario, they went for Mario Bros 1 and Mario 64. I can understand that. Even though Mario Bros 3 was amazing, they went for the game that started it, and the game that launched the franchise in a new direction. I guess Symphony of the Night, which revived a franchise and launched it in a new direction didn't quite make the cut
As for the guy that said new games are flatout better than old games, I think that on the whole new games are better, and we just tend to remember the best of the best from the 90's (for example) and compare the greatest with the average games of today. But there are many old games (late 80's to 90's, I wasn't alive for games in the 70s and early 80s) that stand up to the great new games. In the past 5 years, I played Dragon Quest 3, Castlevania 4, Batman (NES), Mega Man X2 among a few others for the first time and they were all great. I hadn't played them before so I don't think I'm blinded by nostalgia/fanboyism... so yeah, I still play games of the past and I still enjoy them just as much as the Bastions and Arkham Asylums of today
