Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died Saturday, weeks after heart surgery and days after his 82nd birthday.
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and he radioed back to Earth the historic news of "one giant leap for mankind." He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

RIP Mr. Armstrong!
EDIT: I am removing this red warning line. Failing warned me for all the wrong reasons. I remember watching a documentary where Armstrong specifically saying that he wishes to share a secret by the time he dies.
RIP my hero I've always wanted to walk on the moon ever since I saw the documentary For All Mankind. You are a huge inspiration to me and were the main influence on me when I chose Astronautical Engineering as my career path. You will be greatly missed.
RIP. And I'm not just typing it for the sake of typing it - I will forever remember '69. I don't think the feeling of that moment can be recreated in our lifetime.

He's the first of us to set foot on an alien world, our modern Christopher Columbus. Let's make it a point to follow in his footsteps, on other worlds out there in the desert of space.

Also rest in peace Neil Armstrong. True hero of humanity.

Well, that's how life goes. Legends never truly die, they just leave their physical body, but are remembered forever. May his soul rest in peace, for he deserves it.
Gosh, that's the most beautiful line I've ever wrote.
I still wonder, with the first man to walk on the moon, how little Armstrong actually appeared in the media, it seems he wanted to become invisible, yet the whole world wanted to ask him questions.

Emotional is right. I don't think there's ever been a moment since Armstrong's walk that the entire human race was as one; a human being on the freakin' MOON! Our ancestors from millenniums ago could only look up and dream; and millenniums after our descendants would still relate the word "Armstrong" as synonymous with "space exploration".

Is there no end to you tinfoils?
Listen, put your money where your mouth is and go do the laser test. There is a reflecting disk, left on the surface of the moon, and you can bounce a laser off it.
You know who filmed the moon landing? The people on the moon.
But no, I'm sure they faked it, and the USSR's top scientists didn't notice anything wrong, only for a bunch of youtube tinfoils to figure out the secret.

I assume he got temp-banned because he got warned, thought the warning was unfair, and proceeded to edit the warning out himself.

Conspiracy theorist are not welcome here, it's a TL policy. Say stupid things like that, or like "9/11 didn't happen" or that Bin Laden is alive and married to Marilyn Monroe, or that Hitler was a CIA agent or any dumb shit of that caliber and you get a warning or a ban. I really think it's a good thing mods elagate a little bit of humanity's stupidity on this forum.
I can't believe some people think that the Moon landing didn't happen. It's so ridiculous it's actually puzzling. I guess the "secret" was a too clear insinuation not to deserve a warning, but the ban clearly came from deleting the red line himself.
Anyway.
RIP Armstrong. If one person has to be remembered by history in the last twenty centuries, it must be him. Christoper Colombus achievement is a joke compared to his.
RIP T_T. Neil Armstrong never really gave any interviews about his moonlanding, so his death and the fact that he seemed to be a bit introvert and having a secret (as said earlier) will probably only fuel the conspiracy theories even more.
The only problem is that theorists (in my experience) are guided by a lot of hype and unproven or false facts, which makes me wonder if they truely think for themselves as they sometimes acuse us of not doing.
Especially after his death, it would be better to leave this to rest and try to investigate the next Mars landings, which are hard to fake in this day and age and far more ambitious
Yes, i don't get why we cannot discuss about history in here ?I know the TL policy about conspiracy and I don't want to be the douche bag but...
People get warned because they do not believe in the told history. I understand that admins don't want a mess with 9999 pages of people screaming FAKE. But when you look closer, the discussion is LEGITIMATE, the OP is about someone who is into a HUGE debate. So don't expect only brainwashed sheeps to answer RIP.
I mean look at the context when he "landed" on the moon: the rising hegemony of the united states, world war competition to show off who had the biggest and hollywood. Not to say nobody EVER came back on the moon.
The fact is when an admin warns someone who is sceptic, the entire TL staff is taking part on this debate. Why don't you just say why you warn them when they are legit and not insulting anyone ?
I don't wish to piss on this guy's death, i just want the truth as I learned a lot on this website already.

This thread is not the place to debate on what the truth is. If you want to make a separate thread on moon landing conspiracies, no-one's stopping you. This one was created to deliver the news that Mr Armstrong has passed away, and should not be derailed with people bickering.

Well we'd probably close it anyways, same with zeitgeist threads, and 9/11 truthers. But this is certainly not the thread for it.
He was definitely one of the people who got me so interested in science and I think he did the same for a lot of people. At least he will always be remembered as the first person to set foot on another world.

"I think we're going to the moon because it's in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It's by the nature of his deep inner soul... we're required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream" - Neil Armstrong.
Wow, a RIP thread for someone who truly was a legend and made his mark on the history of mankind. He made that second giant leap, the one we all must make eventually.
Why so many people saying RIP? Can you think of nothing more meaningful than generically stating what 100 other people have? It almost offends me how so many people have said nothing except for this. It shows a lack of interest or care. If you have nothing to say other than RIP then don't bother posting at all. If you truly care, then express your feelings and type what you feel.
I for one believe he lived a full life, experiencing what no man had experienced before. Truly a legend who will be remembered for all of history for his great accomplishments.

Woa, don't take it so harshly. Usually people find it hard to find words when it comes to death and there's ceremonial aspect to it. Although three letters is really short, they could at least add dots.
A pioneer who truly went where no man had gone before. I hope the next Neil Armtrong is alive today.

So you are writing down your feelings here, if only to show that you care? That's pretty messed up. I don't think it's honest and genuine if you go around posting feelings on forums because you have keep up a reputation of being a caring person.
Learn to deal with the fact that everyone likes to show their respects in their own way. It doesn't matter how, because it's personal. I would advise you to stop judging people this way, because you simply don't know what goes on inside. The way someone deals with death is largely done on the inside, not externally. So it's sort of wrong to judge someone by your standards.

I'm glad you're not easily manipulated by conspiracy sources, but the sad truth is you probably didn't miss the punch line. It's more likely you were mislead by conspiracy theorists who where intentionally spreading unverified information. The sad truth is, conspiracy theorists tend to run with bits of evidence that agree with their views without attempting to verify them in the least. Therefore it only takes one person to make up something with absolutely no supporting evidence, and the next thing you know it's a major building block of a conspiracy theory.

"It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small." - Neil Armstrong.

Yep, the name Neil Armstrong will live on for pretty much all of human history. I mean we still talk about Christopher Columbus hundreds of years later and all he did was "discover" a continent that had millions of people already on it and had been discoverd a bunch of times already before.
I find it quite frustrating that humans went from pretty much no flight ~1900, to going to space ~1960, to putting a man on the moon ~1970
and in the past 40 years, even despite technology advancing at an exponential rate, we still haven't pushed things.
Considering the technology used to get to the moon, going back there, or going to Mars, would be almost trivial.
People say it's a "waste" of money, do you realize how many billions of dollars the government pisses away on absolute crap ever year? The US is going broke because of runaway defense and entitlement spending, the NASA budget is a drop in the bucket.
Cutting the space exploration budger to save money is like being a 500 lb man leaving off the pickle slices on his triple cheeseburger in an attempt to cut calories and lose weight.
I think even when (if) a person lands on Mars it still won't have as much of an impact on people as the moon landing. Humanity has stared at the moon forever and for that one night people knew there were 2 dudes standing on it starting back.
Two years later, Armstrong was flying a far more ignoble machine — the ugly, insectile Lunar Landing Training Vehicle (LLTV). The 22-ft., 2,500 lb., four-legged contraption was never supposed to climb much more than 1,000 ft. off the ground and was intended, as its name makes clear, to allow Apollo pilots to practice landing the lunar module — a spacecraft they would never get to fly for real until the day they were required to try to set it down on the surface of the moon. On May 6, 1968, Armstrong had the thing just a few hundred feet off the ground at Ellington Air Force Base in Texas, when it stopped responding to his commands, violently swinging first one way, then the other. When the LLTV went into a straight, shallow dive, it was clear the game was over. Armstrong ejected, the LLTV crashed, and he descended gently to the ground, passing directly through the oily cloud of black smoke the wrecked machine was giving off.
An hour later, astronaut Al Bean heard the news, and dashed over to Armstrong’s Ellington office hoping, but not really suspecting, he’d be there. Bean found the future first man on the moon sitting at his desk, filing paperwork. He spluttered something about the accident and asked if Armstrong was OK. “Mm-hmm,” came the response. History did not record if Armstrong ever looked up.
Even though I am not american, the moon landing was one of the man's greatest achievements. While Armstrong was just one cog in that machine that made that possible, he was the public face of this great feat. And for that, if for nothing else, he'll be greatly missed.
Oddly enough this is the first time I have ever seen his face in a picture, but even as a child I had heard his voice.
RIP. May you continue to inspire generations to come. I would have hoped we would have extended the so-called final frontier by the time he died, but hey, curiosity is a thing, even if its not quite the same as an actual person.
This is very sad news. Armstrong is reason why I am very interest in space and science too, and he is my favorite astronot. His greatest contribusion to human is more then to travel to moon, but in making people think it is possible and that dreams come true. "Space is just another frontier" thay say, and Armstrong is proof of this. Now that he is rest in peace, I think his soul is in moon enjoying and talking a walk and smiling before he go finally to heaven. I hope we make another moon mission to honor Armstrong!
