Just a few days and SDA is back with its summer installment of "Games Done Quick".
After the non-success naming Tifa ESPORTS at the beginning of the year our conquerer Poxnor is taking the pad in it's own hands and running Final Fantasy VIII! So we definitely have to find a way, that ESPORTS strikes back! Ideas are welcome; my (stupid) idea was to pay Poxnor for shouting "FOR ESPORTS" when he defeats the final boss Maybe he will go for such a thing!
I don't want to bore you with all the history; Flicky did this sooo good! So here are the facts:
When? Thursday, May 24 7:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) until Monday, May 28 11:45pm GMT (GMT+00:00) (and then the credits) What? Pure Awesomeness! Here is the shedule Why should I donate? All donations go to the Organization for Autism Research Bottom Line!? FUN! SPEED! ESPORTS!
|
Going to be a hell of a fun time, thought I'd give this thread a bit of love before i get maybe the last sleep in days. So many good games to watch, and so many crazy good speedrunners.
Good memories with a lot of these titles, and watching them get destroyed is quite entertaining, particularly with live commentary.
On the completely selfish side of things, looking forward to see how the reception is for Soul Blazer. Reaif and I are like the only 2 people we've found that run the game, but he makes the run look great when he's practiced =D.
|
Why do I have to work weekends!~ ARRRRRGH
M>L<G , IPL, Iron Squid, special tournaments!~~~
And now a fun stream that's always for charity
Good fortune speed-demos-archive!
|
Everyone should tune in and donate if they feel compelled. These marathons are a really great show I am very excited.
|
It's starting soon!
If it's anything like last year this will be the balls. Taking a look at the schedule there's alot of familiar games, but ofc they can't pick new ones every year and trying to beat last years record is always tempting.
Personally I'm looking forward to Resident Evil 1+2, Alice: Madness Returns, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, Aquaria and LittleBigPlanet, just cause I never played the game myself but I'm pretty sure a speedrun of it looks cool.
|
Just 2h to go! Had to transfer some money to paypal to donate like I want to
|
There is a distinct lack of hype over this event in comparison to the last one.

The January Marathon is the big one, this is a smaller, house held event.
Although the SDA opera from 2 years ago was amazing enough that I can't wait for it again.
|
OH yeah I've been counting the days for this one. Several great games in this marathon that I'm really looking forward to. This is gonna be great.
|
|
This is so awesome but the timezones fuck me over all the time. Will watch anyways, so looking forward to this.
|
Watch when you can, the videos will be up a bit after the marathon.
Importantly, donate if you can!
|
AHHHHHH! Spelunker! Hopefully I'll be awake to watch that. The game seemed impossible to beat when I was 7 years old.
|
Awesome, I love these marathons by SDA! Looking at the schedule though I probably won't watch much until later tonight when they start Resident Evil 1&2.
|
Nice run to start things off, Darkwing Duck setting the bar high with the Startropics goodness.

So, what name shall we go for? I'm happy to start of the donations any time! I guess FFVI or VIII ?
These are the runs I'm looking forward to this year, some because they're incredible, some because the runners are really funny and entertaining.

Actually, I think we should go for someone for FFVI. The FFVIII characters will be Squall or Rinoa or just GFs. I think everyone is quite often used in FFVI so I guess, pick a character and a name.
Edit: FFVI has a six character limit, main characters used are: Celes, Edgar and Setzer. Due to the limit, Liquid or what. ESPORTS won't fit. I guess we could just do ESPORT.
Celes is the main one (lame) Edgar has a crossbow and Setzer has Joker Doom which rapes the game.
Setzer yes?
|
Can you actually vote for names? There is no challenge for that... Or can we just "invent" one?

You pick a character and name it anything you want. The limite is 6 letters for FFVI.
|
I know how it works just normally in the schedule list there is a comment "voting for character names" or something like that and I don't see that!
On other notes, because I was remembered:

I have to sleep, if you guys wanna pick a name for Setzer (or someone else, whoever) then vote here and someone start the bidding. I can't stay up late enough to find a good one and donate for it. Hopefully someone will take the lead.
It helps if it's not just TL related like ESPORTS was. Have fun with it.

Portal up next. As much as I enjoy the game, I think it's about time it's retired from marathons.
Kirby is always fun though.
|
Portal run was amazing. Nothing new but no mistake during the run and the end was hilarious. Great start.
|
Looks like they might be ahead of schedule and the RE run will start before 11 EST. Never seen an RE speedrun before, wonder if it will be good.
|
Thanks to their 2011 marathon I started observing the speedrunning community and started running a game myself: Megaman X2, which is really mechanically demanding (but not quite as much as super mario 64). My apm I'd estimate, not including cutscenes, is around 150 maybe 200, with a few frame-perfect tricks. Doesn't sound very high considering I played broodwar around 300apm but it is pretty high for anything that isn't a competitive RTS.
I can't speak for some of these more obscure games but definitely check out Gombill's Super Mario 64 run if you want to see some impressive button-pressing.

Yeah, SM64, Super Metroid, SotN, and several of the MMX games are crazy for inputs (there are certainly others, but those come to mind). Kinda ridiculous to try to mimic some of the great runners...and realize i'm terrible, heh.
|
RE block has been pretty good. Carc got a personal best on RE1 and we got B Scenario on RE2 thanks to some last minute donations.
|
Good luck to the runners and especially kubelwagon.
I participated in this one last year, remotely at least (L4D2 speedrun, I was the Australian) and although I had an absolute blast (and donated over $500) I won't be watching or donating. Don't wish to sour this thread with why, so again, best of luck for the charity.

I just had a really sadistic thought. Do a Gran Turismo 4 no B-spec mode speedrun. There's 3 24 hour races in there

Yes, but can you win them?! ...okay so the 24hour races probably aren't worth it, but the rest of the races are measured by laps not time, so a more skilled player will be able to do it faster.

Watched this on and off at random times. So impressive how well they know these games. I've never thought that you could be good at a game that doesn't have a pvp element in it or something, but man, these guys are good. So fast. I'm interested to see the glitched run of Zelda link to the past, one of my favorite games of all time.

Zelda games in general have a special level of brokenness (?) to them. Those that haven't seen the newer versions of Ocarina of Time any% should really check it out...beginning to end in 22 mins on a game that took quite awhile to finish originally is pretty crazy =D

I realize "bumping" threads is pretty much not allowed on TL, but I think this needs a lot more love than it's getting. It's a great cause, great bunch of people, and it's frequent enough that it could be a quarterly thing for TL goers to get behind and support. I'm having an awesome time watching (please note, I have literally nothing to do with this event, I just enjoy it a lot).

Best time: 1:29:48 by Philippe 'Wak' Brisson on 2009-04-24. Best time: Single-segment 1:35:45 by Philippe 'Wak' Brisson on 2009-06-12. Best 100% time: Single-segment 1:52:43 by James 'Reaif' Schurig on 2011-10-30. So if you can do this in 2min... impressive! Cutting of more than 1h of the current speed run!

Technical difficulties abound, Setup why have you failed us!

Setup has a really hard boss, sometimes you have to restart!

30 more minutes of no more heroes then Soul Blazer
|
I'm waiting for Illusion of Gaia! So looong that I played that myself!
|
If Reaif gets a good Soul Blazer run he could end up taking the WR. I've been slacking off on improving it, and his last run was on pace to take it before a mistake right at the end.
Should be a good run for the wee hours of the morning =D
|
Soul Blazer looks strange :D
|
1 hour of Soul blazer left
|
Go Gaia Go!
Also I always like puwexil's commentary! Will be great!
|
|
Even with a couple mistakes, and marathon stuff (pausing a couple times, getting extra items), that time on Soul Blazer was really solid. Only 2 people in the world with sub 2-hour times...to get that in a marathon setting is really good.

I don't think this has been clarified in this thread yet.
The 'glitched' run is kind of a tool-assisted only trick where you press both Left and Right when you walk up a staircase, causing you to walk through the staircase and access areas you aren't supposed to. Obviously on a functioning SNES d-pad you can not press both left and right at the same time. This fucks with a number of games, notably ALttP and Yoshi's Island.
Basically doing a glitched run is boring and inaccessible (because you need a broken dpad) it generally isn't run too frequently, and is considered a separate category. It is rare to see it done in real-time and I am sure they'll give some explanation before/during the run.

There's a way to execute the glitch on console (without a broken/altered controller) a little later in the run (though it's still only a few minutes long). It just makes for a rather uninteresting run, so the exploration glitch is not something many people run for A Link to the Past.

We are now getting to the big finale! Essentia herself will run one of the best Final Fantasy episodes (you can donate/vote which is the best - currently FF9 is in lead) So grab a chair, some chips, some money for donations and enjoy how your beloved RPG is destroyed in record time!
|
sorry for double post, but if we want to get "bonjwa" in the final fight, we REALLY have to do something, Poxnor just dropped 500$ again... can we accept defeat for the second time or can TL.net deliver a fight?
|
Poxnor beats teamliquid, and they even call Team Liquid out in the chat.
Either way, fantastic Marathon, 6 and a half hours to beat FF6 getting all charecters and Espers in World of Ruin seems impossible to me.
Also, Ultra J-Man getting emotional again. He rather loves these things. Just a quick bump in case anyone clicks the links, there will be bonus stream material to check out, much less structure though.
Apparently Flicky needs to rally the troops better.
|
Don't know why exactly there was less hype now... maybe people are too occupied by playing D3
I dumped too much money (and didn't win anything ) and overslept today for work! So all in all a great and fun event with lots of highlights and epic music
