I really don't believe the 98 percent, altough i'd wanted it. The economy is still bad, so no matter what candidate there is, he's going to have a hard time.

However, I find it really strange that U.S., arguably the de facto leader of democracy in the world, doesn't implement a voting system that ensures as many voter turnout as possible. Having election on Tuesday even when some states don't allow early vote doesn't sound optimal. Constitution, the history behind it etc. are all old reasons which are not logical any more. To oversimplify, more voter turnout = better democracy in principle. I'm a bit puzzled why moving it to a holiday for better voter turnout is not an option for one of the bigger, greatest democratic nation of the world. I'm curious how they handle the voting day in the US. Here in Canada at least, your employeer must allow you to leave work for up to 3 hours to allow you sufficient time to get to a polling station and vote on election day which is again held in the middle of the week. Combined with the polling stations being open until 7 or 8pm (I don't recall exactly) it is fairly easy to make time to get out and take advantage of your democratic right. The reason why holding it on holidays (from what I can tell) usually isn't as ideal is because many people require public transit to get to/from the stations, but if those people are also on reduced hours/service it makes it harder to actually get there.

I think you're way overblowing the amount of people that simply don't vote. Also yeah I voted the weekend before Halloween. Why go stand in a line to vote and be surprised at a bunch of local candidate for SOIL AND WATER MANAGEMENT or some obscure local level addendum to the ballot. That's how jackasses get elected. You walk in and have no idea who these people are so you vote for the first one. Well, those are certainly the ones who don't vote, but I'm just saying that the brokenness of the American working class plays a significant factor to why the turnout is low, relative to other '1st world' countries.

Btw, i do postal voting in England, saves the pressure of getting to the polling station on polling day, so i just put my vote off up to 1-2 weeks prior to the election. Do America have postal voting?

Do America have postal voting? Yes, but lots of people turn out anyways at the polling stations. Some people don't trust the mail-in ballot system, some people forgot to do it, and some people like the feeling of voting in person.

Also, you should go online ahead of time to get a preview of the ballot so you don't have to spend that time at the precinct. Dude I'm not bringing a checklist so I can remember local candidate #178s name. It's easier to just get an absentee ballot, set aside a few hours on a Saturday, and go through all the local/state stuff that isn't widely discussed until the week before the election. Plus there were some hilariously misleading amendments to the Florida constitution, including a flagrant violation of the separation of church and state. Like I said, it's just easier to vote early. No line, can sit down and actually think about your choices while having your ballot in front of you, and you can't accidentally forget or have an emergency come up on November 6th.
