This is a thread about Jason RussellThis is a thread about Joseph Kony |
Masturbation in public!? Really...
The blonde-haired, blue-eyed, Christian filmmaker behind the Internet’s most recent famous activism campaign, “Kony 2012,” has been arrested. For masturbating. And being drunk. And vandalizing cars. In public. In the morning.
Jason Russell, 33, was arrested Thursday morning by the San Diego Police Department in Southern California and the earliest reports detailing the incident suggest it was one hell of a day already for the Invisible Children co-founder and proclaimed “mastermind” behind the Kony 2012 viral video.Police say he was described as "in his underwear" when the first 911 calls were made.
San Diego Police Department Lieutenant Andrea Brown tells a local NBC affiliate that Russell was found masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possibly under the influence of an unknown substance at around 11:30 am on Thursday. Authorities detained him at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Riviera Drive in San Diego, only a stone’s throw from the Pacific Ocean.
Invisible Children's CEO Ben Keesey :
Within minutes of the news of his arrest being released on Friday, the group issued a statement. Invisible Children CEO Ben Keesey published an one-paragraph press release, but did not touch on the topic of arrest. Instead, Keesey says, “Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition."

This has already been discussed in the "Joseph Kony and the LRA thread", but I'll leave it to the mods on whether to keep this thread open.
Yes, it's disgusting the guy did that kinda thing, especially since it kills some of the legitimacy of his work and campaign.
|
Im sure he was high as fuck....
thats the only explanation I see
|
|
Haha thats wild, I feel like posting this on FB to get back at the Kony spammers..
|
Ah I didn't check the LR thread, but this is kinda its own topic.
Personally I'm pissed how someone of such influence whose done so much good could break down in such a degrading fashion. Hopefully this doesn't hurt the campaign too much and someone else steps up and takes charge.

There is some speculation on the legitimacy of some of the facts presented in his promotional videos.

LOL
He probably spent most of donations money on blow for him and sheen.
What epic fail, and hopefully will open the eyes of some sheeple
A rep for Invisible Children says Russell was suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition as a result of a strenuous PR campaign.
LOL those are all sings of doing blow for 48h (+ disgusting amount of alchool, obv) + (And that is very common with degens)

Wow, the movement is extremely important and this is gonna now nobody is gonna give a shit... Anytime you bring up Kony2012 your gonna hear about this moron
|
haha... how ironic. i guess this "incident" is gonna make it even more viral than kony 2012 itself.
utter fail... or unforeseen genius?
|
So . . . how is he going to explain this one to his son?

And this kids, is why you stay away from crack

Uhh...well this is awkward.

Just wow. All of the campaigning and then to get arrested..

Extremely misleading and exploitative is more like it.

Regardless of your thoughts on the movement he was part of, he is after all only one individual in the movement. Though this behaviour is rather questionable (lol at the understatement there), if you believed in the cause to begin with, to change your views based on the actions of one man is a bit ridiculous, in my view anyway.
I was rather cynical to begin with, not so much about the campaign(ers), but about the fickleness of generally uninformed people and after this story broke that was in evidence once again.
|
I'd like for him to explain this to his son now.

Lulz. I hope the kony 2012 fad (aka white guilt 2012) dissipates after this episode.

The man is probably broken. The campaign started as a huge success but ended as a complete failure.
The first wave of stupidity was in favor of his cause, but the second one was pure hate. Well hey, people haven't discovered the grey colour yet.

Invisible Children's CEO Ben Keesey released a statement after 1:40 p.m. on Friday saying: “Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition. He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday. Jason’s passion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we are devastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue. We will always love and support Jason, and we ask that you give his entire family privacy during this difficult time.”

Wow that was an impressive level of bathshit crazyness. I want to know what drugs he took so I can stay the hell away from those and anyone taking them. Lost a friend over this campaing (and I didnt even slander it, just said that kony was a christian and then defended myself for calling him that) so for some reson I find this amusing. On the other hand it's sad that a parent of a young child act like this.

At first I thought this was a bit humorous reading the OP and reports that he was drunk/vandalizing stuff/masturbating in public. From the looks of that TMZ video it looks like he had a mental breakdown ... which isn't really a laughing matter. I didn't really care for Invisible Children organization and they way they went about that campaign, but regardless of that hopefully this guy is ok and doesn't harm himself. Sucks he had to go through something like this in such a public manner.

Not to piss on your hilarious puns, but this guy has managed to achieve something. How often are people interested in African politics? When was the last time there was any kind of shame over what we allow to happen (and at times (in)directly support)? I have 13 year old nieces that have seen this and asked me about it.
The fact that he broke down or whatever it is doesn't make him deserving of mocking.

And that is why you dont do drugs kids especially if you are trying to scam the whole internet.

I dunno, this whole Kony thing showcases both people's capacity to care about issues, but equally their inability to contextualise or be actually informed on them. Not sure if I'm more impressed or depressed by the campaign for those reasons.

He's actually receiving a lot of hate now. It became cool to hate on Kony 2012 without actually thinking about it.
On a side note, christianity represents a third of the world population and has been a great part of our history for two millenia. Just keep this in mind when you try to criticize christians in the light of their past actions.

Renamed the OP because he was not arrested, he was detained and then taken to a hospital to be evaluated. Police statements insinuate that this was probably some kind of mental breakdown, and can only speculate as to whether it was brought on by drug use.

Uh isn't the bottom line on everything just that... a bottom line...profit?
I never said I donated, however spreading the awareness of what is going on in the world is SOMETHING. How many hundreds of thousands of people if not million(s) are now aware of an issue they had no idea about?

Well, I read Alex, but I always check his links, and cross reference. I do the same for the Neocon- er Washinton Post, and the Times.
The problem with media is I know the Times intentionally parroted known lies for over a year and governmental request. I cannot say the same for Alex.

Anyways, as mentioned many times, this might hurt the message or movement a little (even if it technically shouldn't affect it at all).

i guess if you want to make up a story that makes sense you could go with the guy being overworked and handling that with stimulant drugs. malnutrition, dehydration and exhaustion all fit the bill. something will break eventually if you skip sleep with a pill and looks like his head was the first thing to go. he was obviously in a psychosis.
also there is such a thing as a stress induced psychosis, and really, going from a fairly small time nonprofit (" ") into a worldwide news subject pretty much overnight might stress you out a little bit if you're one of the figureheads of the organization.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychosis
Psychosis (from the Greek ψυχή "psyche", for mind/soul, and -ωσις "-osis", for abnormal condition) means abnormal condition of the mind, and is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality".

would you, in that situation, disregard any common forms of human behaviour? this "campaign" was set up to hit bigtime in the first place - now that? suspicious man, really suspicious. one wouldn't act like that if he isn't stuck in the mud already.

I realize it is the cool thing right now to hate on the Kony 2012 campaign, but I am not really feeling giddy over this guys downfall. Its total bullshit. Your money will go to (the 20% thats left after employee payments, travels and these propaganda videos) Ugandas army that uses child soldiers, beats and molests women and children. So your blindly supporting what you are against. No one here should reply me back in anger before finding out what invisible children really is. The real agenda is money.
Tell me more about how you explored the consequences of Kony 2012 after spending half and hour reading an anti-Kony 2012 blog.
Yes, the idea to fund AFRICOM is odd and extreme, but the use of funds to multiply revenue by making viral videos is not that silly.
Of course, it's about grabbing people by their feelings, but honestly, your answer is as emotional as those who answered to the first video. You don't know anything about Uganda's story and the local geostrategies neither. You're simply following a few blogger's opinions (who, by the way, have relayed the same information over and over again). In this sense, trying to strike a chord in people's emotions seems much more effective than getting them to actually think.

exaggeration man, i took bieber as an example. i don't know why mr. invisible children co-founder suddenly went mental - its still "funny" to some extend. given the fact "kony" isnt even a problem in uganda anymore. read the threads, then respond to me. or buy the action kit and fund stuff you might not actually want to just due to good intentions.

Yes, it's disgusting the guy did that kinda thing, especially since it kills some of the legitimacy of his work and campaign. Did his campaign and work even HAVE a shred of legitimacy? Probably not, but to be on the safe side, I implied it may have had some .
saying it had legitimacy when it didnt is just as bad as saying it wasnt legitimate when it was and both of those are worse than admitting you aren't sure if it did or didn't after you said one or the other IMO
I didnt have any problems with the guy until this, more so the charity than anything for the video that they ran. i always thought that propaganda was terrible way of getting awareness since there was no actual knowledge behind it/truth is hidden or incomplete.

This guy seriously gave me the creeps when I was watching the Kony2012 video. I think that's the technical term, right? "The creeps?" Lets just say this story didn't really shock me (though the GIF paints a different picture altogether).
Either way, if he's having a mental breakdown (and not just whacked out on some interesting drug coctail), that's rough. It's time for this guy to drop off the grid for a while. This should stand as a warning: don't get yourself into anything you can't handle. The internet can make you famous, but the backlash will be crushing when they find out you're shady.

To be fair I think your forgetting the certain 'special interest' different groups of people may hold here. The people doing Invisible Children want to see the whole issue there stopped and they are willing to get any suport they can. Considering this guy's position, considering he has been touring and campaigning hardcore for the Kony2012 thing, I really doubt this had anything to do with drugs. The guy probably just ran himself ragged and his brain snapped after a certain point of malnutrition, dehydration, etc. Stress is also a major factor inducing breakdowns like this.
It's really sad the guy has to go through something like this on a world-wide stage. And its also really sad that this could cloud discussion about the real issues that he was fighting for, even if his methods were disputable.

Or maybe he was just raising awareness about this guy: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733679/
EDIT: And there are also general Rambo and 2x General Bin Laden and I have no idea if they have faced any justice after the whole Liberia thing. Lots and lots of war criminals out there. They used those nicknames so they'd be harder to catch for warcrimes so they were kinda clever like that.

that same internet bandwagon has jumped on the opposite side of the road since kony 2012's inception, though, hasn't it? public opinion on TL for example is very negative towards IC, with anyone with a positive outlook on their intentions and actions being a blind bandwagoner muppet.

Theres not enough information to make any kind of estimate as to what actually happened apparently. however there is no end to people that "act" or present themselves as one thing (even more so in media and politics) when they are really the complete opposite way.

Regardless of what you think about his campaign, you wouldent laugh if he had a heart attack would you? A mental breakdown (obviously) uncontrollable, and worst of all more likely to be recurrent afterwards than any other sort of organ failure. Please don't make jokes that hes a child rapist or something of the line, be mature and respect mental illness
I have a feeling we will be seeing a southpark on this.

This is definitely part of the Kony 2012 campaign.

Whether the psychosis is drug-induced or not, this is sad as fuck. Either a guy with a poignant moral message was corrupted by money/power (cynics - pick this!), or an inspiring guy achieved a life-time goal, only to be overwhelmed by mental issues/illness which had been waiting in the background for a long time (I'd bet money on this option).
Seriously, regardless of the option, the guy gets my sympathy. As weird as it sounds, to anyone not in the most pristine mental state, success is (often) toxic.

Maybe if you were unaware of the existance of such substances and thought the world was ending, if you recognize that you are about to start hallucinating you would probably stay indoors.

what's your point? are you saying saying pcp is precisely the drug of choice for christian hipster activists (with two kids) who look to be fairly well off and work at a charity foundation, because a biblethumping celebrity with lots of christ-led hatred to spew, who few non-christians (from the perspective of a non-american) would ever have called a seemingly good christian, did some other drugs and fucked male prostitutes? it is indeed better to post wikipedia links than to make your own arguments if that's the gist of it.
don't think i've called names in the few posts i've made here so i'll avoid doing so here as well, but to put it nicely, man people bringing up pcp really don't seem to take much knowledge or facts about drugs or drug user culture into account when speculating.
|
@IKH, as someone very nto the rug culture, ill tell you that that just doesnt sound like LSD or Peyote, it sounds like (and im repeating shit again) PCP or a mental breakdown. the thng about PCP though is that most people in this guys position only take it becuase their weed was laced with oit or they otherwise took it unwittingly. so don't count yourself as the drug expert becuase you can deny people without actually giving any valid arguments, or any arguments at all really

Are you in Auckland? If you stand by that statement I'll place $20 on him taking drugs recreationally (including any excuses such as: "I was taking them because of the stress of my job"). Let's wait and see how this plays out and whoever loses pays the other - we'll exchange the money at Starbucks on Queen Street.

If any drug made you masturbate in public the streets would be full of wankers 24/7

In a way, I'm amused, but on the other hand, I feel kind of sad.

if you're saying he took pcp, you're not saying he took pcp, you're saying he was in a psychotic state which can be triggered by a bouillabaisse of different narcotic substances, including lsd, peyote and cannabis, or any billion different compounding reasons that have nothing at all to do with drug (ab)use. malnutrition, dehydration and lack of sleep would point to stimulant use much moreso than pcp use if we were to suggest he's been taking drugs, and that would actually make sense if you look at things in a wider context than yet another random guy flipping out, jacking off on the street. what can be surmised from the malnutrition, dehydration and lack of sleep is also that his condition worsened progressively instead of all of the sudden blowing up. yet again that points towards anything but dissociative drugs,

What the!?
That is one of the weirder things I've seen. (Referring to the video)
What the hell did he take?
Guess this kinda ruins he's campaign?

TMZ ALWAYS gets a video somehow lol

I really hope this ruins him for life to make an example of exploiting people's emotions and circumstances to make mass moneyz.

LOL all you guys seem to believe it ... I think it's funny that stuff like this usually happens to people who trying to make something good happen ...
Just like Julian Assange who suddenly raped two women

He is a CIA agent in deep cover, tasked with creating a Kony 2012 campaign to invade Uganda.
After this he is discredited by the CIA in order to prevent the Koney 2012 campaign from suceeding.
I'm sorry what?
Is the CIA run by M. Night Shyamalan?
|
personally i find this quite amusing but i wish more information was released so we know either if it was a drug related problem or some mental problem that surfaced for sure.
|
|
That is drugs yo. There is no doubt in my mind

Well... I feel sorry for the African kiddo he was using as the face of his movement. He had obviously put a lot of faith, hope, and trust in this guy. I don't know how big of a problem Kony is today, but I do know that the Kony2012 movement just suffered a huge blow. One I doubt they can recover from in the court of public opinion.
P.S. Good luck getting any more representatives and senators to sit down with you now.

I don't see how this changes anything.
There was always a problem with the messenger, though admittedly this is more sensational.
The message is still the same.

From the way he was beating the pavement it looked like out of frustration. Maybe he found out he was being duped by the gov and used by them to get troops into uganda for oil/military reasons rather than to help for the cause he originally was bringing awareness to? Just a thought. Shrugs. Or just simple mental breakdown.
