I disagree as well. I mean you're both right in that the majority of people in high school - hell even still in college. It's not hard to dress "better" than your peers if you're in high school. Stop buying shit like Obey and LRG and you're already in a step in the right direction. This is even more applicable since spring/summer is going to be hitting soon, and it's MUCH easier to get away with simple colors/styles than other seasons. It's incredibly easy, just grab a few good fitting v-necks, 1-2 pairs of denim, some chinos, some lightweight button ups, and you're seriously fucking set for the rest of the year.

Here, I just created a few outfits out of 3-4 pieces of clothes in 2 minutes, and they're not even super "fashionable"; just simple pieces of springwear that anyone can do on a budget:

The last one is probably even more applicable to your age group, as a lot of dudes are still wearing super skinny jeans - and those are a pair of skinnies that I still own that I just turned into shorts for the summer. Bear in mind, this is just super super simple stuff that someone in high school who wants to start dressing differently from this:

This is all anyone has ever worn up here in norcal for the past 5 years, I call it the Zumiez standard - a skateshop that I used to work at that sells every single article of clothing seen here.

Also a sale going on at J.crew atm - 30% off all Final Sale items. Sizes are running out super fast, I was going to order some of those club shorts I've had my eye on for a while, but they only had a 35 as the smallest size when I wear a 33.

What do you call those half-zip sweaters? I have a few, but I have no idea what they're actually called. They're my favorites for layering.

Dockers D1 Slim Fit - $40
Land's End Canvas Refined Slim Fit Chino - $60

I own all four and they're all great fits. The best fit for me goes j.crew > alpha > LEC > d1. However the d1's are flatfront so they fit differently in the first place.

so the j crew 484s fit slimmer than the alphas? i heard that the 484s kinda fit like a levis 511 while the alphas fit like the levi 521s. any other brands that have good quality slim/skinny fit chinos?

Would it be possible for you to give us a comparison fit with Levi's? The reason I ask this is because many of those brands are not available in the stores here so it would be great to know how they fit compared to the different Levi's which are here in stores. I'd really appreciate it!!

those LEC chinos were available for $20 up until recently for a long time. No point in buying anything from LEC at retail when they have crazy sales

Yeah LEC is ok stuff but its not worth retail prices. 50% off and then it is a good buy.

This is extremely ridiculous. Those Dockers Alpha Slim pants are 45 dollars, which is about 35€.
If I want to buy them on the german amazon, they are 95 EUROS (!!!!!), which is 123 dollars.

This is a fucking joke.

Would a brown v-neck tee, blue jeans, original converse all stars, go together with a black half-zip sweater? Or would a gray half-zip sweater with some brown over lay be better?

This sounds like a really odd request but I'm just wondering if you guys could suggest stuff for an outfit that basically screams the opposite of the usual engineering-student getup. I feel like I've got nothing but jeans, plaid shirts, and hoodies, could use something totally different >_>

what color are the converse? I'm guessing black but I figure I should ask. also, brown and black clash IMO, so I'd go with something other than the brown vneck.

The thing that bugs me is I am never sure if arizona just prevents fashion because of weather or if its harder to pull off when most of your wardrobe is made to be worn in 110+ heat rather than layers that allow you to adjust to any point in the year.

Black and white. I know that black and brown clash, but I don't know how else to wear the brown v-neck (I guess it's live brown). What colors wouldn't clash with the black and white converse? I only have converse and white/gray new balance running shoes. Not a great selection. :S

Both. I have so many t-shirts right now, so I literally went out to buy some sweaters just for winter, even though I'll only use them a few times a year. In the summer, all I wear are t-shirts + jeans. No need for anything else. Arizona fashion sucks.

Yeah sorry it took me so long! I've been busy with work, so I just grabbed some dockers and levis off the rack after work and took a few pics~

Keep in mind the dts and 511s are straight off the rack so they'll look better after a few wears; plus I'm not wearing shoes so that may look a bit awkward. I think once I start to fill out my j.crew chinos from working out they'll look a bit better. I have scrawny little thighs since I'm super skinny, but I'm starting to notice them thicken up a bit from biking/running.

Hmm is it best to avoid wearing sneakers with chinos? I'm not talking running shoes, but shoes like this:

@ Taku: Engineers dress like shit engineering students dress even worse (I am an engineering student too) so the best way to avoid looking like a classic engineer is just dress well. There is nothing wrong with plaid shirts or even hoodies necessarily the key is looking well put together. Plaid shirts should fit well not be the tents that I see many of my class mates wearing. Hoodies should be used sparingly and should be solid and free of logos. The only logoed sweat shirt I own is one for my college which I wear to sporting event and around the house only, never to class. I own one plain navy sweat shirt which a wear very sparingly not the same damn sweat shirt every day like some engineers (gross.)

One way to instantly look better then most engineers is to ditch the trainers and pick up a nice pair of shoes. Other tips are make sure your jeans fit well, and a dark and not distressed. Also don't wear jeans everyday mix in some chinos or cords.

@Motivate: Although those are better then running shoes, they are still sneakers and I think you'd look better if you ditched them and picked up some nicer shoes.

@ Weaklink and Nationinarms: Fashion still exists even in the desert. If you can tolerate t-shirt and jeans you'd look way better if you ditch the t-shirt and got some button downs in summer weight fabrics linen being the best. Also jeans are not the best choice in the summer, to heavy to dark to hot. I recommend some flat front shorts (no cargo shorts) or light weight chinos. My summer go is a pair of shorts and a linen button down. You will look better and feel better then jeans and t-shirt

Im getting married in June. Its going to be a nice outdoor wedding in a vineyard, so I decided to keep it light and me and the groomsmen are going with light grey suits. JWD's last blog inspired me, and I bought a pair of the Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenues in walnut calf, and a matching Walnut AE belt. Cant wait to get them!

Also ordered some other stuff recently. Tweed Sport Coat off ebay which im really excited about, and some random stuff off the Cladmen sale.

Oh, I also ordered a couple shirts off Charles Tyrwhitt. Does anyone have any experience with their shirts? I went for the tailored cut, which is slimmer cut than their "slim cut". Im about 5'10-5'11 and about 180ish lbs. Not skinny but not big, just average. Anyone know if slim or tailored would work better?

Those all seem like nice pick ups Focus. Just be careful ordering online in particular with things like jackets which can be tough to get a good fit. Charles Tyrwhitt is approved as far as quality goes. Fit is hard with just height and weight, if your 5'11 180# and work out at least occasionally tailored is probably the right choice if your 180# and skinny fat, you might of wanted to go with the slim cut. Did you measure yourself before ordering, they have a pretty good size guide. If they dont fit, you should be able to exchange without any issue. Good luck.
