Maybe in switzerland, but in California, direct democracy has bankrupted the state.
Direct democracy is just as bad. It operates on the notion that its population is educated, responsible, and well informed (Which us Americans are, on the whole, not even close to achieving)

Your opinion is wrong. Wait for the arrival of moral squad. You will be transported to a correctional facility where you will be held until further notice.
Who are you to say the moral squad shouldn't do that? Are you so brash as to assume you have the moral answers?
I just emailed my senators and congressman. I don't think my few emails will make a difference. What I do believe is that everyone together sending emails will really make them think and do something about it. Here's to hoping for the best!
How far is it in Congress yet? I think alot of people don't know how rigorous it is for a bill to actually become a law. Last time I read, it hasn't even gotten through the House committees yet, let alone the Senate and even then let alone the joint committee. Then it has to get through the President's desk and the Supreme Court can kill it with judicial review.

the level of sarcasm just went through the top of Everest
I think you can say that this time the senate/house is not representing the u.s.a(wtf america is a continent!) here. I don't believe that for example IdrA would support this bill.
im sure the American people also wanted nothing to do with the patriot act or NCAA. So you have two bills i just mentioned which allow indefinite detainment of American citizens with no rights and all that has to be done is they have to be labeled a witch (terrorist), NCAA will allow the military to do this job on american soil. Then we have Sopa/Pipa that will effectively censor the internet, which i am pretty sure is its actual goal. Shit in America is getting extremely scary and the people have to realize that a framework is being set up. If all of these pass you have in effect a legalized martial law state. If you think this is crazy talk and the US wont do this you should check out one of the early uses of the Patriot Act:
In 2004 CIA Asset Susan Lindauer was detained under the patriot act for 5 years and she was supposed to be buried forever under it if it wasn't for union radio and support for her case. She was not allowed hearing or trial.
Why was she detained? She was going to tell the public that the CIA knew since April 2001 that 911 was going to happen and in July they even knew what the targets were, She said that is all the CIA talked about 6 months leading up to 911. She has far more damning evidence that she has revealed but here is a clear example of the abuse of the Patriot act. With Sopa everything that she is talking about right now could easily be censored.

you assume the government has your best interests at heart. Unless you are part of the elite 1% you would be wrong. surely all the job losses, foreclosures, and general loss of wealth to the majority of citizens all while massive banks are being bailed out should be a pretty big clue.

*edit*
Because freedom of speech is a freedom that I hold very dear.
I find it disturbing how much coverage this has gotten but yet ACTA has gotten nowhere near the same treatment. It's similar in scope to SOPA and has global consequences.
We need to remind everyone and our government that we are a REPUBLIC government. if you dont believe rehearse the second line of the pledge of allegiance. in a republic government there are just flat out certain things you cannot vote/debate on and those are your rights. anything infringing upon any of your rights is deemed, you guessed it! UNCONSTITUTIONAL
I don't even know how i feel about SOPA anymore other than just truly depressed. I'd be outraged, offended...but frankly I'm not surprised in the least; It's expected from my idiot government.
I hope at the least google/youtube/etc...can at least somehow become international organizations, or move their home to canada or something so they can still function if the US closes them. i dont know. it's just really frustrating to have a situation and know it's terrible and wrong and you can't actually do anything about it. that's effective that is. inb4 petition letter call etc. done done and done again and keeping doing. but it's not listened to in our country. meh. =\ must find something to snuggle.
i hope it goes to the supreme court and is ruled unconstitutional.
If totalbiscuit, whos not from America, is caring about OUR laws then I think the big names of eSports need to start caring too. I've been messaging Destiny, HD, Husky, ect., and trying to get them to help inform people because they have big channels with many viewers and they are a voice that people will actually listen to. Let's try to get their attention because they too, have a big part in the internet who can help convince the ill and uninformed to oppose and if need to, rebel against this.
They have too many powers already and now this? Makes me very sad, because they will abuse this to the utmost just to try and get people to buy their medium. These corperations are holding on to a dieing medium, dont let them kill the last place where free speach and radical ideas can be spread.
Edit: Maybe I didn't read far enough back through this post, maybe I'm a little slower than others at finding this. Article I linked is from the 15th, still the best thing I've seen regarding this matter. /hope
I hope to God above that the fact that prominent figures like TotalBiscuit know about this will open the somewhat hidden issue to at least our community. From there we can spread it elsewhere.
Let's ball up and A-Move to oppose this bill. Let it be known that we have a whole section of eSports in the community coming together against SOPA. im posting in shoryuken forums too about this.
I'm a little amazed that Day9 and the yogscast haven't gotten behind the initiative to kill this bill. Together, those two groups could educate MILLIONS.
Day9, husky, hd, joshy, psy all video game casters have such HUGE voices on the internet can bring us all together. Just need to actually see our cry for help
