While I like the idea of a mass boycott, you can't just cherry pick the companies that you already dislike. That accomplishes nothing. It sends no message because it's easy to deprive yourself of something you don't want. Can you, and anyone else entertaining this idea, refuse to buy another movie, CD, or song on iTunes because the RIAA and MPAA support this bill? Will you never buy Windows, games published by Microsoft, or MS software because MS supports this bill? Will you never buy a Wii, a PS3, or a 360 because Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft support this bill? Will you never buy a Ford? Will you never tune into the MLB or go to a baseball game in the US? Will you never watch the NBA or go to a basketball game? What about an American Football game? Will you never watch CBS? Will you never go see a disney movie or buy a Disney DVD? Will you cancel your subscription with Comcast if you have them, and never use them if you don't? Will you never shop at Walmart? Will you never buy Nikes or Adidas? Or greeting cards? http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s968/moneyAny of the numerous interests and organizations supporting this bill not mentioned above? I'm not disagreeing with the notion of boycotting, but it's silly and ineffective to only cherrypick who you intend to boycott. If you aren't strong enough to deprive yourself of the things you don't need, your message will be just as weak. This doesn't just go to the person I'm replying to.
Supporters are basically announcing war. There is another mean to get what you've mentioned, if you catch my drift.

Americans can't be trusted. This is way worse than China and their state censorship if you ask me, while China censors to protect the image of the state and reduce political liberalness, USA is employing corporate-sponsored censorship, which affects the consumers of the entire free world.
All US politicians except Ron Paul are serial hypocrites, they are addicted to flip flopping. Obama is a farce, in 07 he said he would do all in his powers to protect net neutrality, he also said he promises the frist thing he would do once in office is to remove US troops from the Middle-east region, but the guy hasn't been able to deliver ass shit, he's only increased troops all over the world now including Australia. No Republicans nor Democrats can be trusted, none have ever had a consistent voting record except Ron Paul.
For U.S governments and their servitude to corporations.

I really believe that this is horrible and it just seems that we're slowly edging closer to something drastic. America continues to tries to fight and pass ridiculous laws yet for these kind of things yet they ignore other criminal activities. It is really not within their right to be able to control the internet in such a manner.
is there any way people outside of the US can join in to help prevent the act? I've heard of the petition on avaaz but not much else for people outside of the US

Sure it has many, many steps to get through in order to pass, but I think it's better off trying to fight this at this stage early on instead of fighting against it later on and having them say, "well, where were you when we first announced it, didn't seem like much people were against this at the time.. blah blah?" Those congressman seem like the type of people who would do that.
I am making tweets and posts about this trying to get as many people at least aware of what's going on, but most of the time it's without a response or they don't understand or care about what's going on. As of now, I don't think it'll pass because it's such a ridiculous bill to pass that would break our entire community, or at least have us scrambled all over the place for an amount of time. However, with watching the hearings during those 2 days and seeing who some of our lawmakers were, and yes, a lot of them are really old and heartless to me haha. I really think there's actually a chance for this going through because of that alone.
I think it's the casual general public that will be affected the most from this because once it hits, they won't know where to go or what to do. D= I hope people are informing everyone and discussing and taking some sort of action against this. Our freedom is on the line and like Total Biscuit said, they're going to Tactical Nuke our free internet world! O=
Edit: and yeah, I did hear about the 21st being the day they're going resume talks. Kind of disappointed when they said it was postponed until 2012.. Idk what they're doing and why they're really trying to rush this is beyond me. Maybe they're trying to take advantage of every strong person occupying Wallstreet instead of SOPA and they're trying to sneak this bill in while everyone is being caught off guard. That's just my thought though.
ive been trying to bring people from reddit, tl.net and srk.com together right now and hoping that everyone will invite their friends. We just stick thru these tyrannical moments and infect the truth one person at a time. Keep fighting the good fight!

Bills thrown up hastily just before Christmas when all everyone want to do is go home, are always nice and shady.

You guys realize the bill has been already rejected... right? Probably not by the time the OP posted, but now it has. The bill was killed in the senate, not to mention that Obama already promised a veto if it came to him, as someone else has already said in the post.

I'm going to try to boycott all the companies on that list. I don't know how well it will go though. I now have no qualms about pirating their content either.
Why on earth does Adidas support the bill? You can't download shoes!?!

Since they will continue to vote on admenments to the bill on the 21'th, it has not even rechaed teh congress floos, let alone the senate. So please stop spreading false information. Yes Obama has (allegedly?) promised to Veto it if it passes, but form my understanding that only means it will have to pass through both congres and the senate with a 2/3 majority. Since the bill already have that amount of support, at least on congress, a Veto is far from a garantee that it won't be passed. So it is stil vital to get the information out and spread tha news so that the (US) public is actually aware of what their goverment is trying to do, right now.

Just sent this email to Rep Adam Smith, from WA. I lived in the states in his district for a while, so even though I'm not an American citizen I decided to write it anyway. It's basically an expanded version of the thing in the OP.
I am writing to lodge a protest as to the recent passage of two bills: PROTECT IP (S. 968) and SOPA (HR. 3261).
I am hugely against this bill. It is a massive move against internet freedom that seems to only be in-motion due to greed in a total disregard of civil liberties and freedom. This needless regulation will be virtually impossible to enforce but more importantly, doing so would be a frivolous use of manpower. Real criminals will find ways around any walls that are put in place (experience has proven that hackers are always several steps ahead of institutions), and the only thing it will accomplish is to punish innocent citizens for the crimes of the few, the real criminals won't have their illegal activities affected. China has very similar laws to this; do we really want to associated with a country that is known for its restrictions on civil liberties?
I am opposed to online piracy, and I recognise that it is a problem which much be dealt with. However, killing the patient is not the way to cure the disease. I truly hope to see this shut down and hope that you will be a part of the opposition to these bills.

Are you saying the government has too much power? the "government" in usa has ZERO power, it's run by the corporations.
