My message to my Congressional representative:

The bill "PROTECT IP (S. 968)/SOPA (HR. 3261)" is, in my opinion, a very poorly worded bill giving the government exceedingly broad powers of Internet censorship without notice or proper judicial review, as well as impacting the technical foundation of interconnection that the Internet is based on. Such a bill stifles free speech and innovation, which are the true resources that our country is based on.

While I understand the ongoing need to seek intelligent and effective legislation against copyright and trademark infringement, this bill is a horrible approach to the problem, and I hope yours will be one the voices against it.
If you ban me, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

I hate to say it but, i actually dont think we can stop this. When you think about it, what are we trying to prevent? We are trying to allow illegal products to be downloaded, and the government will obviously not let this happen. It is just wierd for us since we are accustomed to it, but at the end of the day it is illegal, and i dont think the government has a choice. What do you think they will do, prevent illegal actions or let you watch your movies for free?

it sucks i know, but what can they do?

It's unfortunate that the concepts of personal and intellectual property still elude some countries.

Imagine if mass theft were actually reprimanded and a person's right to a livelihood respected. Legislation like this wouldn't even need to be considered and torrent sites could simply be shut down. What a fanciful idea!

The thing is, this bill affects the non-tech savvy people. It won't stop piracy at all and those who actually know how to use the internet will not be that hindered. This bill affects the average every day user who just wants to jump online and look at youtube or their facebook.

You realize the government says what is legal and was isn't right? That something is illegal doesn't mean either that it is right or that legislation must be passed to make it enforceable. In itself it is a very, very poor argument for legislation.

we can stop this mess and replace it by another version of a new "anti-piracy" law that respects due process, offers no or almost no room for being abused for censorship and that does not harm or threaten legal internet business.

That's what the people on the committee looking at this bill are trying to get, but sadly the silent people just shut down every effort they make to make the bill remotely fair and not heavily in favour of one side.

While I like the idea of a mass boycott, you can't just cherry pick the companies that you already dislike. That accomplishes nothing. It sends no message because it's easy to deprive yourself of something you don't want.

Can you, and anyone else entertaining this idea, refuse to buy another movie, CD, or song on iTunes because the RIAA and MPAA support this bill?

Will you never buy Windows, games published by Microsoft, or MS software because MS supports this bill?

Will you never buy a Wii, a PS3, or a 360 because Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft support this bill?

Will you never buy a Ford? Will you never tune into the MLB or go to a baseball game in the US? Will you never watch the NBA or go to a basketball game? What about an American Football game?

Will you never watch CBS?

Will you never go see a disney movie or buy a Disney DVD?

Will you cancel your subscription with Comcast if you have them, and never use them if you don't?

Will you never shop at Walmart? Will you never buy Nikes or Adidas? Or greeting cards?

http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s968/money

Any of the numerous interests and organizations supporting this bill not mentioned above?

I'm not disagreeing with the notion of boycotting, but it's silly and ineffective to only cherrypick who you intend to boycott. If you aren't strong enough to deprive yourself of the things you don't need, your message will be just as weak. This doesn't just go to the person I'm replying to.

Seriously.. I believe that not a lot of people are actually aware of this. Sure it has many, many steps to get through in order to pass, but I think it's better off trying to fight this at this stage early on instead of fighting against it later on and having them say, "well, where were you when we first announced it, didn't seem like much people were against this at the time.. blah blah?" Those congressman seem like the type of people who would do that.

I am making tweets and posts about this trying to get as many people at least aware of what's going on, but most of the time it's without a response or they don't understand or care about what's going on. As of now, I don't think it'll pass because it's such a ridiculous bill to pass that would break our entire community, or at least have us scrambled all over the place for an amount of time. However, with watching the hearings during those 2 days and seeing who some of our lawmakers were, and yes, a lot of them are really old and heartless to me haha. I really think there's actually a chance for this going through because of that alone.

I think it's the casual general public that will be affected the most from this because once it hits, they won't know where to go or what to do. D= I hope people are informing everyone and discussing and taking some sort of action against this. Our freedom is on the line and like Total Biscuit said, they're going to Tactical Nuke our free internet world! O=

Edit: and yeah, I did hear about the 21st being the day they're going resume talks. Kind of disappointed when they said it was postponed until 2012.. Idk what they're doing and why they're really trying to rush this is beyond me. Maybe they're trying to take advantage of every strong person occupying Wallstreet instead of SOPA and they're trying to sneak this bill in while everyone is being caught off guard. That's just my thought though.
