Technically, because it circumvents due process, wouldn't (shouldn't?) the supreme court strike it down? I realize they can't just arbitrarily strike stuff down and that there is a process, but I would still expect the supreme court system to take one look at it and say "lol, no."

Time to go underground and get half the 75% of the worlds internet traffic heavily encrypted, regardless of "legality". In related new: (sorry for the dutch) : http://tweakers.net/nieuws/78841/universal-wij-kunnen-andermans-videos-van-youtube-halen.html tldr: Universal lawyers think its totally cool to remove YouTube videos to which they do not have a single copyright to in any way. You can film your pet hamster, put it on Youtube without music and Universal can take it down. Note that this is still pre-sopa and acta! the worst is yet to come...

+ Show Spoiler + Dear Friend: Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 968, the PROTECT IP Act. I welcome your thoughts and comments. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced the PROTECT IP Act on May 12, 2011. The legislation is in response to concerns about online copyright infringement and sale of counterfeit goods. The bill would allow the Justice Department to seek federal court injunctions to halt online promotion of illegal activities. I believe copyright protection is a foundation for innovation. Intellectual property is the creative core of the information age. Patent and intellectual property ownership laws offer needed protection for the economic and other interests of inventors, entrepreneurs, performers, and other creative thinkers. These protections are also important to future growth and employment in important U.S. industries. Protecting intellectual property is more challenging than ever before. Among other things, high speed broadband enables access to the entire catalog of movies, music, books, television, and technology. Online promotion of counterfeit goods by foreign entities is also a growing concern. How to protect copyright, patent, and intellectual property rights — and do so without infringing on consumers’ legitimate interests — requires dealing with a complex series of problems. The PROTECT IP Act has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Although I am not a member of that committee, please be assured that I will keep your views in mind should this bill or related legislation be reported for action by the full Senate. I appreciate hearing from you, and I hope that you will not hesitate to contact me on any issue that is important to you. Sincerely, Kay Bailey Hutchison United States Senator I urge everyone to writer there congressmen and senators. Also, post there responses so that it will be in the public eye.

That has nothing to do with the law and it has everything to do with youtube giving Universal the privilege to take down videos and Universal subsequently abusing that privilege.

Everyone with some tech knowledge will go underground and help family and friends to get underground as well. Websites like Wikipedia and many other "public domain" sites might get totally banned for .. well lets face it, just about anything that doesn't bring in heaps of cash for themselves.

What will happen then is that over a year of over a couple of years there will come a bill that will do the same but will be worded differently. At that time nobody is really protesting anymore and it will follow trough. You could argue this is a very cynical approach to the system right now but it has happened before and could happen again

Or use the link in the OP and send your rep a letter in 2-3min. Fuck Twitter/emails. Contact them directly or send a letter. Come on Americans, the whole world is counting on you. I highly doubt Obama is going to veto. He promised to veto NDAA, but didn't. And just today he promised to veto any Keystone pipeline project, and looks like he went soft there too.

Obviously more money isn't going to solve the problem. OT though I'll be watching this closely to see if it passes or not and what the news actually covers of it if anything.

It's a hilarious measure attempt to separate the current copyright litigation currently allowed on US soil. It also means that the pirate bay can easily circumvent the bill. To be fair the veto is only so strong and i believe there are rules where in a veto from the pres won't change anything. I don't know the particulars but this might have been what happened. Either way if the decisions comes down to being split I hope obama vetoes it. While we don't like to admit it the US basically has a strong impact on the laws of other countries who model themselves on the US.
