TBH I don't look at the top of teamliquid all that often save for PMs and stuff. I mainly read posts that require me to scroll down. Most of the time I'm on TL, I don't even notice the ads, and if I do, it's unobtrusive enough for me to not care, which is saying something (I adblock every other website pretty much).

Why run adblock at all? I only visit sites that I like and I would like for those websites to continue to exist, for which they need their advertising revenue. If you run adblock you are only hurting the websites that YOU want to visit.

I'm yet to see a website that has really obnoxious ads and at the same time really good content. If there was such a website, then I guess an ad blocker of some kind would be a good idea, so long as you let the site's administration know that you will block their advertising until they make it a good deal less annoying. If enough people do the same thing, they'll tone it down.

Noo!!! I like any excuse to see that cute little elephant. I wish the site would be flooded all the time so i can see the we cannot hold one. ^_^

I do not adblock any of my favorite websites. In fact i dont really adblock that many websites in general. They deserve the ad revenue that it brings them, its the least i can do seeing i use their content FOR FREE.

Instead of a cute baby elephant they should use a bunch of swarm hosts, that would get some people to switch

Even if Adblock was off, you'd still see the elephants if the hosts file was edited.

Nazgul, you're acting like you're the lord of the moral domain while we're wicked people incapable of any judgment but ones which satisfy our egoist sensitivties. I'm not taking offense here though, just saying that your statement can be interpreted in this way. I would like to think that there are a lot of very intelligent, cultured and educated people reading and contributing here.

But I have to say that I have ad-block on to save bandwidth, memory, etc. Makes the internet less bloated, it's in my interest to leave it on. To add an exception in ad-block for your website, in my case, far exceeds the potential utility for you. Might take me 15 minutes to learn how and properly apply the filter. The money I would be generating for you is (hyperbolic) 7,000,000 times less than the market value of my time. I'm figuring 0.0001% chance of me generating 2 cents by clicking an ad by accident.

I would also add that you're using an advertising model because you're forced to, not as a courtesy. Competing message boards would eat TL alive if it decided to charge for participation/membership.

I've built a few mildly successful websites in my time and total traffic maybe approaching one million. I don't expect anyone coming in my hobby websites to care about the infinitesimal moral economics because the reality of message boards is that they can be replaced by someone who will let them run for free. In the end no one should care about the moral economy here. It's infinitesimal fractions of cents and they don't even matter if they're brought together.

What I'm ok with is spending the hundred dollars on the GomTV vods this year. Now you're talking about a scale that actually matters, paying market value for a product with significant costs.
This is a teaching moment:

Every year, millions of people think they know better than anyone else, and thus become insufferable to everyone around them. It's a horrible affliction that has stymied modern medicine. It's called 'rational egoism'. Symptoms include becoming pretentious and irritating, losing all your friends, and becoming 'that guy'. Don't be that guy. Please take precautions to avoid becoming one of the sad and lonely group of people each year who are stricken with this plague. Be nice to your fellow man. Go out of your way to help others in need. Enjoy life.

If you, or someone you know is suffering from rational egoism please contact your local homeless shelter, soup kitchen, food pantry, religious denomination, or any miscellaneous charity. Please, friends don't friends become rational egoists.

Holy jump to conclusions batman...

Just because I offer an interpretation from utility doesn't mean I subscribe to it and only it. (Nevermind the irrational jump from utility to "rational egoism") I used it as an explanatory tool. I'm a trained philosopher and it's really uncontroversial in my field to use utility economy to discuss ethics and such.

Not to mention you don't even understand rational egoism in the first place. It doesn't lead to misery. Misery is the complete opposite of self-interest. What you describe would be irrational and self-destructive egoism.

When you say:

"Every year, millions of people think they know better than anyone else, and thus become insufferable"

Well, right back at you sir. If you must know, I'll be thinking rationally about a lot of other things too. Maybe you want to deduce that I'm a horrible person from this equation I solved?

I don't really use an adblock besides the popup blockers and stuff that are default in my chrome.
As long as it doesn't give me funny viruses or stuff like that I'm fine with loading them, it doesn't slow down my loading or connection or anything, and I'm a guest on their website that they pay money for the domain for, and to keep the site up and stuff like that.

Such a vicious cycle.

I also think Elly the elephant should still cry when ads are being blocked, I love seeing her (even though I have no adblocking software at all, she still pops up every once in awhile for some reason <3).

im actually confused by the ads on TL, are people just blocking the banner ads, or are there meant to be some evil popup that sprout from TL horse wings?

that being said i think of of those adblock things stopped me from watching gomtv stream as clicking those buttons just do nothing now...

I keep adblock off of TL, the ads dont even get in the way of anything. I hardly noticed them before and I really don't notice them now.

Why is the Elephant wearing a Kippah ? Is Elly the elephant jewish ?
I did block the adds at the beginning but I excluded TL some time ago because of the streamers that make a living from it.
Is there a version of TL where you can pay 5 bucks or so and get to watch the site add free ?

I stopped adblocking TL months ago. Because I'm not a jerk.

Also, I can't believe people took it seriously that TL thought blocking ads "Hurt ESPORTS." Jesus Christ. Like that hasn't been a running joke in the community for six months now. I can't believe they removed the ESPORTS Elephant because people legitimately took offense. Jesus Christ.

I don't adblock but TL still tells me that I do. I see the sad elephant and I want to hug him and tell him that it's not my fault.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

It's probably because you use NoScript and have googlesyndication.com blocked, which is Google's adsense service.
