.__. yeah, some guys are saying that "these bastards are RACIST!" when all the data points towards that if we really don't want sharks to die out we should stop on farming these lions of the sea.

How about, thick clear rice vermicelli? Closest thing you'll ever get to shark fin without artificial shark fin or just shark fin, but its missing that nice texture that shark fins have.

White people, let me tell you; Sharks fin soup is DELICIOUS. But unsustainable. :D
Oh darn. Well, that's too bad. Can't satisfy every curiosity in life, I guess. Thanks for the heads up, wouldn't want to spend a mini-fortune on an imitation that doesn't hold a candle to the original.

I'm chinese and shark fin is really delicious.
Shark fin does not have a taste. Furthermore, a LOT of shark species are becoming endangered. Shark and apex predators, and having them go endangered would be disastrous for the environment. Futhermore, the practice is beyond inhuman and cruel.

But I really want to try it, especially since I'm of Chinese descent. I'm not exactly a gourmand, but IMO they taste pretty much the same (shark fin does not have a discernible taste b/c it's really easily overpowered by other ingredients). There are maybe some small texture differences that's all. Chinese shark fin soup should just all use artificial shark fins. I'm sure the majority of people won't be able to tell the difference. Chinese people just eat shark fin as a status symbol, kind of like how some people wear furs from rare exotic animals. Okay even if they taste exactly the same...
There's a reason why people dont ALL use imitation goods. It just doesn't feel right! IMO, its really darn silly to suggest that the solution is for us to all eat artificial sharks fin.
For me, it's not just about the taste, but also the tradition.

I agreed with a lot of your arguments in the Toddler thread; Before you started calling people names and got yourself banned. You kill the shark you take the whole thing, use the other meat to feed people too. Finning sharks is a HUGE problem on Australia's Northern Approach border. I remember seeing on 4 corners(a news show) footage of hundreds of sharks in a single day being finned and thrown back into the water, actually in Australian waters. If it's such a huge Chinese cultural thing then they can source it from wherever it's legal. It's such a high price because it's hard to get, which also makes it attractive to small boats and fishers to try and pull off a dangerous opperation. As long as it's done humanely and legally then i don't have a problem. There are many more issues like this as well. The rhino horn; rhino's being killed just for their horn to feed the asian black market and natural chinese medicines. Tigers penis; Tigers being killed just for their genitals for asian medicines (which don't work/placebo effect). Obviously these are just examples. I don't mean to single out asian countries but they are just the examples i know of. All in all I don't believe in a lot of the asian medicines. The healing properties of a lot of natural eastern remedies have since been proven to be bollocks. Back to sharks fin. Humane and Legal
The problem is not just the humane part but the fact that these bigass fishes are being plucked out of the sea at an alarming rate. Its actually pretty hard to make it humane, I mean where can you kill it instantly and/or without it having to feel any pain? Sharks are pretty damn useless to humans once the fins are off, so thats why they just throw them inside the water, where they have a slow and painful death

good, ban that shit.
the way that shark fins are harvested disgust me. i don't see a problem with them infringing upon the rights of the minority. culture isn't an excuse if it causes that much damage to ecosystems and shark populations. i would ban consumption of any meat or product that is harvested unjustly and harmfully.
it's fucking stupid that people are bringing race into discussion. this has nothing to do with race, retards. this ban is about stopping damage to shark populations and stopping unethical finning of sharks. i understand that it hurts some chinese culture but unfortunately i would say culture is less important than the issue at hand.
if eating a delicacy is more important to you than stopping poaching and dwindling shark populations then you're kind of selfish. cut off indulgence and do some good will ya?
the sad part about this discussion is that if i say i'm 100% chinese then i'll be taken more seriously.

I've had shark fin soup being half chinese. Gordon Ramsay hit on the head when he says it adds absolutely ZERO to the soup.
I don't understand how people say its DELICIOUS rofl. I bet most of you think so because your parents tell you so.
|
I'm glad they introduced the ban.
I watched Sharkwater a few years ago (I'm Chinese myself) and I was appalled at just how gruesome and brutal the way they 'harvested' the fins. The fact that it's really just a chunk of cartilage that offers nothing but some textural elements to a dish made primarily of unrelated broth is kind of silly to me. I think Sharkwater also addressed the rapidly decreasing shark population.. and that they kill less people a year than vending machines.
And it's stupid how it's supposed to be healthy (since apparently there's some misconception that Sharks have disease resistance/immunity... even though they're not) and pretty much just ends up being a chunk of cartilage that offers nothing but mercury poisoning is a bit laughable. If imitation meat's going to prevent sterility... then why not?

First the bile bear story made me really sad and now this.
|
Btw just a bit of fact for you all: sharks have been around for hundreds of millions of years
so if sharks are becoming extinct it really has nothing to do with their intrinsic ability to survive... it's the humans.

The texture is quite nice combined with the taste of the soup, which is why a shit load of us love it. Yeah, it does have quite a bit of mercury, and yes it may be that our parents told us so, but it is quite delicious :D. Definitely worth saving the shark now so that later when I'm on my death bed, I can enjoy a good hot bowl of shark fin soup :D
