I for one don't care one bit if women think gaming is a sexist hobby and refuse to take part in it. The day I see tampon commercials during MLG is the day I find a new hobby.

Of course, I would like to see more females in esports in general. I think that if we lighten up on the derogatory comments that we point towards females, they will start to take up esports. Hopefully, this effect of females joining the esports community will be much like the Olympics, where at a certain point in time, the number of females in the esports community will drastically climb, becoming almost on par with the number of males. There are two reasons for the lack of women in the top of SC2 (and mostly anything else): 1. A.) I've never said being sexually attracted to a woman was sexist. What I said was that not caring about what she wants or cares about is sexist.
B.) Why does it anger people to call what they're doing exactly what it is? People objectify others, it's bad, we should try to be better. The fact that people do bad things doesn't mean we shouldn't try to better ourselves as a society.
C.) Me caring about feminists issues and me believing that Esports is misogynistic does not mean that I have sided for/against the Starcity Article. I have not once said that I agree with that article nor have I once said that I believe in what the article says. The US and EU are very misogynistic societies, it's very normal and expected for Esports to also be heavily misogynistic. I'm just calling it what it is.
D.) People being okay with making sexist comments does not mean what they're saying isn't sexist.

Bitch => Female Dog
Calling someone a bitch is calling them female.
Bastard => No father
Calling someone a bastard is saying they don't have a male leader (ie, mother's child/raised by the mother)
Both are saying someone is bad by being female/raised by female.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't girls use "bitch" as an insult too? Or is this the case that it's "their" word, which is stonewall sexism in itself.

The only sexism in the gaming culture is the desperation your typical geek holds towards getting to tap the female of the species. A very large percentage of guys who do things like go out of their way to give a girl special items, or on the flip-side go out of their way to troll girls, are doing what they are doing because at their core what they really want is to get laid. That's the only sexism in gaming. And it's not like a lot of girls don't milk the positive aspect of that.

Read the header at the top of the thread; day9 didn't call anyone a bitch.
furthermore, i'm vaguely dissapointed that any day9 fan would assume this journalist was correct. When i hear someone say something bad about day9 my initial thought is "this person is literally incorrect" because day9 is a good person.

Valuing traits isn't objectification. it doesn't matter if you think it is, you're wrong, this isn't a debate, this isn't about how you view it, this is about fact.
I highly, highly, highly suggest you go look at what objectification actually is before you start giving it whatever the hell meaning you want, because you don't define words, thank God.
You caring about feminist issues? What feminist issues, the fact that they have just as much chance to join the guys league but instead decide, "Naw, fuck that, let's make our own league and let's limit it to only females" That doesn't sound sexist at all, you're right, in fact if I say, "bitch" once in my entire life time it totally negates that plus some, because clearly I just hate all females and want them to get back to the kitchen or else I'll beat them. There, I said it just so you don't feel the need to put words in my mouth like you have been doing for everyone else, you just have to quote me out of context and not interpret sarcasm.
E-sports isn't heavily misogynistic and I think that's the main point of this thread, anyone who says that is full of shit. Link me to a full study against other places, like frat houses, schools, jobs (that are lacking females at least on certain shifts/potential higher ups during shifts), sports, hell everyday life, whatever else you want to shove you in there. In fact I can guarantee you the last thing I'm doing when I'm trying to avoid getting supply blocked and prevent a three pronged harass drop is whether my opponent has a pussy and if so if I'd enjoy fucking it. I really don't give too much of a fuck after the game either.
You are doing the very epitome of making a mountain out of a mole hill. Stop misquoting people and saying it as fact and stop making grandiose claims without any statistical evidence while at the same time basically telling people they are full of shit for not having statistical evidence at their fingertips the second you want it.

Don't even attempt to try and give definitions of words when you have no idea what the hell objectification even means and yet you like to throw it around a dozen times a post. News post for you as well, definitions of words change, gay used to mean something entirely different, now you are likely to get the shit beat out of you by white knights for using it in public no matter what context you use it under, furthermore you really have no idea what intent and that to an extent makes sense because you don't understand anyone, not even yourself. (As seen by making ridiculous utopian ideals and trying to enforce them on everyone else, then not sticking to them yourself)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't girls use "bitch" as an insult too? Or is this the case that it's "their" word, which is stonewall sexism in itself. Sometimes it blows my mind because sometimes it's more sexist to point out sexism in things that aren't sexist.

that's a fair point. correction: he didn't call his girlfriend a bitch in daily #100, the daily referenced in the article. He relays the same story, without bitching.

Wow large tangents and turns out Day9 DID say 'you young bitch,' but in a monobattle vod.
This I think is the crux of the matter:
On September 18 2011 08:51 Talin wrote: The problem with these threads is like... they're raising the issue (which does exist) to a completely different level, making it some kind of specific uptight point about political correctness that gets shut down easily because people hate that.
The heart of the matter is really just about being nice (something that seems quite undervalued these days, partly thanks to the absolute trash that is western media for the most part).
For the most part, EVERYONE knows how they should behave in ANY kind of social situation in order to not make people around them feel awkward or offended. The problem is that very few people actually want to be nice - because we've all been raised in an "I'm the most important person in the world and I can and should do and say whatever the fuck I want to and whatever makes me feel good" kind of culture.
It's a mentality that's been beaten into people and the way to beat it out of them would require a much wider approach than making an internet article about a very small slice of a greater problem.
I've said it before that lot's of people are more interested in being right then welcoming and I wish it were the other way around. A lot of these issues could be resolved with a little more consideration for other and not fighting for every single 'right.' But such is the way of things.
and @zimz. I'm sorry, but a lot of male behaviour cannot be excused as 'lulz it's biology.' Yes, there is biology. A guy can't help noticing an attractive girl, she just sort of stands out. But a guy certainly can control what he says, what he continues to think (natural reaction huh, she's attractive and move on vs an hour dwelling on sexual fantasies) and what he does. That is unless you're a biological determinist where everything you do is controlled by random synapses firing... in which case I don't know why you're 'debating' on a forum as free choice is an illusion. But it is a wonderful excuse to hide behind to justify a lot of rather despicable behaviours.

Would anyone actually care if day9 called someone a bitch? i mean would anyone actually go as far as to just completely stop watching him because they found what he said so highly offensive. Id say if that was the case.. that person has other issues.. i really love how these threads go completely off topic.

I have not once said that I agree with that article nor have I once said that I believe in what the article says. If we're, "very misogynistic," I don't believe that there is such thing as a society that isn't.
I'm going to try to do a blunt, rude, to-the-point, TL;DR version of my opinion of this entire situation: If you've never called someone a bitch, you're a pussy who I assume was raised by overprotective, naive parents. If you believe the word, "Bitch," is sexist, regardless of context, fuck yourself. You're a miserable human being. I'd rather be called a, "Dick," than to be ignored as a human being.

The daily #100 part in the article didn't have anything to do with the quote. It was about how good it is to be so passionate about a game:
As you watch, you might find yourself moved by Day[9]'s emotional recounting of the many positive things that happened to him as a result of being unashamed of his game of choice—StarCraft: Brood War. When he's moved to tears recalling how he and his brother had supported each other through the emotional roller coaster of tournament play, you might find yourself moved with him. When he talks passionately about how StarCraft is not something to be hidden away but rather to be made a point of pride, you, caught up in his breathless enthusiasm, might agree. And like many of us just over the fence in CCG land, you might apply that sentiment to your favorite game, whether it's an RTS, an MMORPG, or tiddlywinks.
