devouted christian? out of ammo? who knows. I think the better question should be, what was he planning to do with the bomb at the island and how the f*** did it get there? I've not seen anything about this yet in the least...
I followed this pretty closely in TL and other forums, and if i remember right, he came with a boat. Take it with a grain of salt, i just have an image in my head that i read something like this yesterday.

But if he managed to get there himself with alot of weapons (and maybe even a second shooter) he would manage to get a box of explosives aswell. Boat I guess. I didn't read anywhere that he had a bag or something with him, only the glock and rifle. I'm just wondering if he had it with him or if he had actually gone previously to the island to plant it.

Okay, I understand there is no death penalty in Norway..
But couldn't they just have shot him from a helicopter to prevent most of these killings? I mean they clearly had access to a helicopter from that horrible photo of the kid begging for his life. I mean honestly.. This could have been stopped much sooner than it was. It sounds like he wiped out most the damn kids on that rock.
Shit even if they just shot him with a tranquilizer. Idk.

I am speechless. After following the news non stop for 12 hours yesterday, I went to bed. The official number then was 10 killed at Utøya, expected to rise. Of course it would rise, we had all heard the stories of how he went into buildings, tents and requested the kids to come to him because he was there to save them. One man, isolated island with 600+ youth, over an hour with shooting.
But I did not expect this. Not 84. This is beyond madness.

They did shoot him apparently. It just took 30 minutes for the police to get there.

My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the victims of this sick man. How is it possible to be so cruel to kill children, with no way to defend theirselves, who have done nothing wrong and have a future ahead of them. How is it possible to murder people in cold blood? My girlfriend lifes in Norway and was around that area a week ago, I don't want to think about losing someone that close to you that's why I feel so bad for the people who lost their family, friends and children due one insane man. Also I have great respect for the major of Oslo who said that "I wish I had been there so I could stand in front of the children and ask the gunman to kill me instead."
All I can hope for is that the murderer will be brought to justice. But that won't ever heal the scars he left behind.

Wow 80+ causalities? I'm speechless..
All my support to the norwegian people and those affected by this massacre. Sadly that's all one can do...

Source on cops shooting him?
Headlines now: a manhunt is being started after multiple witnesses confirm a 2nd shooter.

Unless the helicopter had the right personal and equipment that's not really possible. It's not a hollywood movie.

Well. I don't think there's to much info about what happened before he started shooting. He didn't start instantly at arrival at the island. I think he walked (drove?) from the jetty up to a area outside one of the buildings out there.
He did pose as a police officer, so people thought he was the real deal before he started shooting (and even during the shooting) is my understanding of whats going on.

Saw an interview with a survivor on danish television who said (amongst other things) the shooter had "A LOT of ammo" with him, so I would guess he had some kind of bag. Not sure, of course. Just seems pretty likely.

I doubt that there was a helicopter manned with assault-rifle bearing soldiers taking the photo...

Are you sure? I saw one article saying it took two hours.

80 youths.
I can't believe this, I'm so sad right now. What is going on in the world..

So what was the reason behind the cops taking so long to show up? He was shooting on that island for an hour and a half? 2 hours? It sounds like people with cell phones were texting and calling like crazy once it started. I don't understand.

My fear is that we have only seen the beginning of this. The amount of careful planning that seem to have been involved by this douchebag leads me to think that one his main motivations for all of this has been to get attention - serious attention.
The recently created Facebook and Twitter profiles, his very articulate posts on the right-wing online forum, the fact that he surrendered rather than suicide - all this lead me to think that this guy has already planned his trial statements. I fear that he will use a trial as pulpit for his own messed-up version of what's going on in world, and that he hopes to become some kind of hero/martyr to people who share his views on the world. Considering that we have very strong traditions for openess in Norway and that there is no classified stuff involved here, I cannot see this NOT being a huge public trial, propably several as he will surely appeal all the way to our Supreme Court.
Just to give an indication of how small-scale Norway is. The scumbag's appartment is next door to a good friend of mine, where I have spent a lot time...
Finally I would like to say that I am, so far, impressed with how our political leadership has handled this. I also hope that we as a society can overcome this without succumbing to fear and paranoia.
It's past noon here now, so I guess it's ok to get a drink - I sure as hell need one.
Completely agree here, I think his actions were some kind of sick political statement and the trial will be another stage for him to express his views... I say, let him talk so we can see how twisted and wrong he is! Great post larssto, thanks for the inside view and enjoy your drink.

Okay, sure the guy with the camera didn't have a gun.
But my point is, why didn't this happen at all? There was no effort for anything like this. It sounds like your law enforcement got bested by a maniac. Which should never happen. It's what you guys pay your taxes for.

It took atleast 1 hour, I believe it was closer to 1.5 though You have to understand though the communications were fucked after the bombing and apparently the fucker went straight from Oslo to the island, so he had a lot of headstart on the police.
It seemed like they could've been faster, especially considering there were boats out helping the kids in the water long time before police got to the island, but I suppose the boats were probably around the shore and it were civilians that heard the gun shots(and probably the screams) and went out on their boats to help(this i don't know note, apart that the boats were out there relatively fast).

There was a possibility it was a terrorist attack.
