So the title pretty much says it all, im curious as to what people here on TL work as or what enducation you're currently under and what that education will lead to.
As for me, I'm taking my engineering prep course, with plans to become a chemical engineer and maybe even a civil engineering degree on top of that, but we'll see what the future brings ^^
If anyone here is under education to become, or is a chemical engineer I'd love to hear what you think of it

I'am not a chemical engineer but as i know from my friends it's not that easy to find a job atm.
Maybe it's different in other countries.
EDIT: Forgot to add my job :p
Business intelligence Consultant

I'm going to the University of Texas at Austin for Computer Science, and am about to be a senior.
Currently I'm working as a software tools intern for Cray Supercomputers. I'd like to go into Software Engineering after I graduate, and potentially go back for my masters or maybe PhD depending on if I feel I can cut it.

I just got a letter about 3 days ago informing me I've been accepted into the police academy. Orientation is July 20th.
Going to follow in my dads foot steps. <3
|
Still have a year in school, but after that I'm aspiring to study to be a civil engineer. I'd love to have a job where i invent/create stuff :D. A good education will atleast see to it that I'll always be able to find some sort of job ^^.
Edit: Post 666 :O

Right now I work for the largest privately held telecommunications company in Canada, we are partners with Google, Microsoft and others.
I work as "Pre Sales Support" Basically on my way to becoming a Sales Engineer. I also do work in the Data Centre, running fiber, setting up servers, hubs, switches.
I's also starting to manage new Lync accounts. Which is the new version of OCS.
My Certifications include Networking+, A+, MCITP, MCSE, MS Office Certified. And other more obscure ones.
Basically if I don't fuck this up, this is where I can grow my career, I work in the corporate ehad quarters, along side with the VP, CEO, CTO and directors.
I actually love my job.

Right now I'm an admin on an oil and gas construction site, starting my first year of law school in the fall! Very excited.

I am currently programming a database for an engineering company. This is a great job in the field i want for the summer. My uncle works here and its a pretty community centered place where we do everything on our products from design to production and distribution.
What I aspire to do is design things. I really want to make something and sell it for a lot of money. I can also see myself being some sort of engineer for hire type thing like.. want motion sensing toilets or cameras or voice activated lights or televisions? give me a call! kinda thing

I do work at home DSL tech support to pay my way through my Comp Sci degree. Hopefully I'm able to stay afloat until I finish!

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Systems Engineering and Operations Research. I have already completed my Masters in Electrical Engineering.
I aspire to open my own Air Traffic Management and Research Company. My immediate goal is to become a Senior Aviation Analyst.
EDIT: If my interest dies in Aviation, I might become a Senior Data Analyst @ Blizzard :D

I hope to eventually find a job in industry doing environmental/renewable/clean energy-based R&D.

I can't see it getting boring as we work on many different projects that all have a large amount of variety. Yeah, that would be among my favorite things to do as well. Me and my friend applied to a similar position within my company. He got the job, no hard feelings though I am happy for him. He basically gets shipped all the latest toys from Apple, Samsung, Google, etc and has to create pretty and cool stuff our CEO can present at customer/industry conventions.
I do sales consulting with a focus on implementing sales processes in IT.

Well I've just started here back in February, just recently passed my probation. And it's a challenging job.

Well Masters in Electrical Engineering was challenging, given that you need to be quite good at Calculus, Density Functions and Statistics. But I am finding my current PhD to be extremely challenging, given the amount of time spent on researching which sometimes doesn't yield the results you expected.
Currently I am working as a Co-op at a company called Sensis Corporation which deals with Air Traffic Management issues. It was recently acquired by SAAB.

Studying for university where I will read law and politics for my (hopeful) career in politics

I work on build tools, code management and continuous integration for a company that makes software for set top boxes (DVR, cable boxes, etc). It's a pretty chill job, the company is willing to pay to further my education so I'm trying to take advantage of that while I'm here.
I used to work for a small game company, but had to leave due to instability with paychecks and such. I'm hoping to get enough experience at my current job to move back into the game industry at some point later on as a tools programmer.

My dream is to become the best Starcraft II programer who has ever lived.

Currently attending University of Western Ontario for Chemical Engineering.
For the summer I'm working in an electrical engineering position for a small firm. Can't complain its a job and some kind of engineering experience Although I must admit I dread sitting infront of a computer all day, everyday, hopefully Chem Eng. will allow me to work in labs and on project sites where I can move around, more my taste!
|
I'm technically a civil engineer but I have 2 jobs as a PHP programmer for different websites.
|
I study programming , but that is not what i really want to do... During the summers , i work for the biggest Concert organizing company in Greece which is very nice since i get paid for watching bands in front of 30k people ^^ I also help at my father company when they need me. But what i trully want to be is a VFX specialist ! And i have posted some of my first projects here and everyone seemed to love them !

Thats what I'd like to do, lab work Preferably for some of the over paying ridiculously rich oil companys in Norway. Just chilling, taking a few samples, checking that everythings allright ^^ Or perhaps a research lab, discovering new types of fuel or even medicine When I think about it research would be alot more fun, but less pay obviously :p

I am the computer tech support manager at my uni. Studying digital art basically; dream of going into the gaming industry someday. ^_^

Working as a technical drawer in a company that rents out tower cranes and studying International relations in uni.

I'm a biology researcher - I worked in a genetics lab for 3 years and am currently working with metabolomics.
I'm actually at work right now :D Acid hydrolysis procedures have a lot of downtime.
|
Studying Geography, as I would love to work in any form of GIS (Geographic Information Systems), which is working with a load of information to create data about relationships, patterns, trends, and so on about the current situation of whatever it may be. Economics, geography itself, people, culture, etc. etc.
If there is still a place in the world for it, I would love to do cartography as well.

Currently Studying accountancy and working in an accounting department
I would say i aspire(strong word there) to be a chartered accountant.

I'm currently finishing off my high-school years and aiming for something scientific for my career (partly because my parents are asian hahahaha)... but I honestly have no clue what I want to become as an adult, I do want to make my parents proud but at the same time get some joy out of my job... I want a job that has no schedule and no routine, I don't mind NOT "being my own boss", I want something exciting and special and enriching, something with which I can be satisfyed with once I'm in my deathbed in the hospital at the age of 87 with prostate cancer and I look back at my life. I don't want to wake up every morning at 6 am and have a boring career that never seems to have a beginning and an end and just waiting for my retirement (like most careers seem to be nowadays). I play the violin (6 years now, I'm almost 16), yet I love math and sports. Any suggestions?
|
I was hired at my company to deploy a massive Cloud Backup System (using the Asigra platform) for small community banks. My one man team turned into a team of 4 and I now manage the team. Performing maintenance, storage upgrades, and third level support for about 300+ customers.
I fucking hate it. I want to be doing eSports full time... but it does feed the family and put a roof over our heads.

Chemical or bio engineering! I'd check it out, lots of math and exiting lab work - And if you work in research you can develop new medicine and drugs etc. And its so fun

I have the standard Biology degree (LAS, not Agriculture), planning on getting my PhD whenever I get a chance or I find myself out of work. Right now I'm working for a university in collaboration with a group in Israel, and get paid as a staff member. I sort of just bounce around doing whatever projects the laboratories at the university needs help with since I have such a broad background with a lot of lab experience. It's the closest thing to being a science mercenary :p

Im a PhD student, 2nd year, doing research in high energy astrophysics (with a focus on GRBs). So far mostly theoretical stuff but also some data analysis
|
Currently doing MSc Economics (and screwed up my dissertation, need to resubmit soon :/). In September I will be working in banking/investments/m&a (any of these sectors really, I'm interested in lots of stuff that makes money and adds value), then MBA and private equity or top-tier investment banking.
My gf suggests I should start my own jewelry business. Tbh, I seriously consider this opportunity

Going to school to become a Chemical Engineer. I want to get an MBA and pursue a graduate degree perhaps in Engineering or maybe med school. Later on in life, I want to become a teacher and own my own restaurant.

I'm a web developer in a small company, we are all living in different country (all in europe tho) so i work from home.
When i started programming i was thinking that webdeveloppement is silly but after more than two years in the field, i actually like it Web developpement can be boring, especially if you work on a shitty website, but when you have to build a solid webApp things get cool 8)
The thing i love the most is the amasing freedom i have in my company, small companies are the best
|
Without going into too much detail, I am working in the coolest possible job you can imagine that incorporates my interests and my academic background: international relations, cyber security issues, statistics, and online gaming.
|
If everything goes ridiculously well then I'd love to get into the Quantum Communication research staff at some big university(wouldn't mind Caltech for example ^^). Seeing as the chances of that happening are quite slim(along the line of "the chance I'll meet a beautiful american blond girl with a filthy rich father, who believes she should worship the very ground beneath my feet" kinda luck)....I'd probably end where all physicists end up - programming Assembly 0_0

I'm working as a storage worker (not sure if it's translated correctly). I have to admit it's quite nice having a job where I can completely forget about anything job related when the day is over and where I'm utterly replaceable - so when I've got vacations, I really have a vacation.
Else from that I'm aspiring to finally publish a poem collection, write a script for a movie and probably other fun stuff which seems like fun to do at least once in life ^_^
|
I am a quality control tech for a wholesale video equipment rental business. In reality I mostly work freight, but I do get to play with a lot of gear and it's a good foothold into the tv production industry so that's pretty cool :D

I work for AMD in product marketing (GPU's)
I race go - karts and other than that... play sc2 or do random stuff with the fiance.

I'm active duty military where I work as a Airfield Operations Manager.
I control aircraft activity up to departure and upon arrival. Aside from physical aircraft, I conduct flight plan verification to ensure the route of flight is accurate.
Aside from aircraft activities, I aid in the maintenance, construction and putting together of airfield requirements such as pavement, lighting, navigational aids, airfield signs and paint markings.
This is a general layout of what I do on a day to day basis aside from dealing with the military bs.

I don't know what my title is to be honest. I'm doing an internship now where I focus a lot of my attention on copywriting (luckily I'm writing in Swedish, not english ). I'm also the project lead on a project thats really interesting. A married couple is exploring Svalbard and I'm keeping contact with them over satellite phone, tracking their progress and writing articles about their journey. They'll begin their journey next week and I'm really looking forward to it.
When I graduated from high school I was so sure that I wanted to do tech stuff. Maybe get into programming or something similar. I ended up enrolling into a 2 year long Network Technician programme at Luleå University. After just a few days I could tell that it was the wrong place for me. Boring classes, uninspired teachers ('You'll never use what you learn here outside the classroom') and so on made me drop out after 2 months.
I basically turned into a bum at this point, living at my parents and trying to figure out what to do. After a few months I spotted a Media and Communication Science programme that focused on strategic communication. I sent in and application and forgot about it. A few months later I got a letter saying I was accepted. The entire class was awesome and after three years I graduated only to find that there were no jobs.
I figured that I might as well continue studying. I took classes in design, writing, web development, photography and so on until I finally came to the conclusion that I needed a job. Just taking more and more student loans wouldn't cut it.
On new years eve I met up with a friend of mine who said she was working at a small start-up company with a big corporation backing it. They were looking for a few more people and she said she'd talk to her boss, maybe I could get an interview or something.
Long story short, I started an internship there a month ago. They did not have the budget to hire me right away but said that an internship might be a good opportunity to test the waters a bit to see if I'd fit in.
Early last month was my first day and I'm loving it so far. I'm doing important projects that I get to lead myself and I feel that its more like a real job than a simple internship. In the few weeks I've been there I've done a lot of copywriting in a lot of different areas. Banners, web sites, brochures, feature-articles, PR, press releases, scripts for commercials etc. It's so creative, it's awesome.
The only downside so far is that it is a bit slow sometimes because they haven't had time to pitch my expertise to their customers yet (they havent been able to offer anything like what I can provide in the past). I'm also doing SEM, strategies for crisis management, social media and internal communication. I do a lot of different stuff. My hope is that I can start "for real" asap after my internship is over.
EDIT: Good god I rambled on. Sorry about that.

I'm currently majoring in Mechanical Engineering, but I'm also torn between that and going pre-med and becoming a doctor :/
|
I'm going to study in a "cégep" for the next two years, something we have only in Quebec, which stands between high school and University. After that, I think I'll study architecture or mathematics, but still not quite sure. Physics sound good to me as well.

Mechanical Engineer, working in the sugar industry which is pretty big where I live

I work as a Technical Producer for ESPN, fantasizing about the day SCII would be broadcast.
As for aspirations, I would love to be involved in getting E-sports on the network, but I'm not sure where it would fit and I also need to do some researching, which I don't have much time to do.
Maybe one day..

Studying at UMBC for my Information Systems degree. Currently doing QA for this company that combines streaming with learning medical stuff. Pretty cool program although I'm not sure if QA is a career path I want to do.
In the future, I hope to be in the eSports industry as either a player or as something else.

I'm going into third year software engineering, but I'm not quite sure if general software engineering is what I want to do, probably game design.
I'm one of those people with a variety of interests, I want to go to film school, take medicine, finish engineering, have my own business, that sort of stuff. Too bad I'd be dead by the time I finished all of this so I have to make decisions along the way.

Surprise!! everyone is a compuiter engineer or programmer.. Just curious when you guys went to college did you know a lot of code and shit cuz tbh I spent most of my time bullshitting on games, but I can't imagine a better industry to go into really..
Anyway I do construction right now in NY we are working on one of the largest tunnel sites atm. Work is very hard but the pay is good and will help me get back into school. I just need to decide what I want to finish studying

We'll im in high school right now, but hopefully going to be doing aerospace engineering in college/work, I've always been a math science guy but maybe I'll swing towards another type of engineering. All I know for sure, is im going to be an engineer haha.
Good quote about Engineers:
"I'm not going to be a scientist. Scientists are men who dream about doing things, Engineers do them."

I chose management and commerce because it is the closest on the poll to what I do. I work with a firm that buys and sells energy commodities (Crude oil, Gasoline, Diesel, Ethanol, Biodiesel, Etc) on markets with other counter parties.

First vote for education, I have my master's degree and am currently applying to be a Spanish/English teacher around AZ, or maybe going to korea to teach English (and watch sc ^^). I wonder sometimes if getting an sc2 club together at a high school level would be viable. I doubt parents would go for it though

Currently work in a petrol station. Within a year I hope to pick up a junior network engineer role.

I really haven't decided what career I want to pursue. I'm currently rolling around the possibility of majoring in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering/Computer Science or Astrophysics/Cosmology. If any of you have experience in any of these fields of science, or a science closely related to them, I'd love to read some of your thoughts/opinions.

Have you considered teaching in Associate Degree programs? If you are looking to teach, it could help to do it for a University (on campus or online) as part time for extra income and experience, especially if you decide to teach College/University level at some point instead of High School.

I'm currently in hospitality but dropping out to take architecture instead. (weird, both had 0 votes ) however I'm considering taking information technology as well, but probably not.

I'm an engineer - I do research and development for a technology company in the natural resource industry. Honestly I still have no idea what I want to do with my life long-term. I've got a phd in chemical engineering. I'd recommend it, but make sure you love it - otherwise it will be a tough study (followed by a tough life ^_^)
Job prospects are regional i guess. Here in the Netherlands the employment rate is very high (98.5% for my generation), pay is decent, but don't expect to get rich.
In your OP you suggest doing both chemical&civil - i personally don't see the added value of doing two engineering disciplines. I'd rather look into something that provides economical background and/or helps you to influence/manage people.

You certainly won't hear "profit" in the education system, more like "lack of funding." But if you're looking to avoiding "performance" as well, I'd be wary. High stakes testing for performance numbers is ruining our education system

Basicly what im doing is taking chemical engineer for sure because I love chemistry And then maybe, if the job market is slow or I dont feel done with school, consider taking a 2 year master program to build on my current enducation called "Industrial chemistry and biotechnology" roughly translated. That basicly allows me to get the civil engineer title and choose a bit more specificly what I want to work with, cause within this course there are several specialitys like "Process chemistry" "Bio tech" etc It also gives management and economy courses and that cant be a bad thing to have ^^

Im currently studying a mixture of Chemistry, Music, and German. My problem is that I get really interested in one subject for a couple of years, and then move on to another one. First it was chemistry, then music, and now ESPORTS. (the German ive been doing all along, i just like the language.) As for what i plan to do with it all, I will almost certainly pursue some sort of PhD track, with the intent to teach at a university. Whether i do that as a musicologist, a composer, or a chemist has yet to be decided.

Medical doctor ^^ Trying to specialize in either intensive care (anesthesia) or infectious diseases.
It wasn't something I knew all along, but I had one of the five best averages in the country so I could pretty much pick whatever I wanted when I left gymnasiet. I actually ended up rolling a dice when I had to decide which education to apply for as I was horrible conflicted over chemical engineer or medical doctor - both my father and my sister are chemical engineers so if you've got any questions I'll gladly try and shed some light on it if I can @ OP.
But yeah, my dice ended up showing chemical engineer but it simply felt wrong so I went with medical doctor instead. I'll admit there are moments (@ exams) when I regret it though - I'm far better at chemistry than medicine, but the human aspect is what makes medicine so special and I get to use a lot more of myself as a doctor which I find very fulfilling.
@Blix: In scandinavia it isn't 2 different engineering disciplines, just our masters are called civil engineers when talking about engineers. You can either study chemisty as an engineer (so you will end up as a civil engineer in chemisty if you do the masters) or at the university. The university education is more geared towards research and less towards the industry than the civil engineers.

Anyone with experience studying medicine here? Hows it been so far? Is it as hard as you expected, it is worth the work if it is hard? Has the experience been what you expected?

I recently got my work as an IT consultant (did my degree work at the same company) and working for Ericsson - which I love because I'm really into network programming and networking protocols in general (although I HATE web programming like php and such). Working on VoIP stuff for games and alike.
That said I'm pretty broad, as long as I don't have to do too much Java I'm happy :D

This is one of the threads I really enjoyed reading ever page of before posting. Keep kicking ass guys and gals! I'm a post-doc (rock on to that Astro post doc I saw post earlier) doing multiphoton microscopy (read: Lasers and Microscopes) at Ecole Polytechnique in France. Afterward, I'd like to go back to the US and get a job as a prof, develop optics-based medical diagnostics either for a small company or govt lab, and discover/be the first person to do shit nobody thought possible.

I'm about to start my last semester of a BSc. Computer Science & Games Tech. double major. I aspire to become a game developer as I've been obsessed with video games since I was about 4, and I have a particular passion for competitive game design and development.
But honestly, for the near future, I'd more than anything just like to make a whole bunch of money so that I can payback and spoil the people who have given so much to and for me. When my Mum no longer has to work her ass off, I'll worry about my own aspirations.

Studying Mechanical Engineering, and hoping to branch off into Mechatronic Engineering. Mechatronics is basically a synthesis of Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Control System engineering. I'm really hoping to get into the mechanical aspect of the robotics field someday.

I want to be a Software Engineer, specifically doing game engine architecture. And I'm pretty serious about it. Currently I'm in highschool, have never taken a software class, and am writing a 2D game engine during summer since I don't have to waste time doing homework.
Edit: I should add, in c++ because it is the current industry standard for game engines.

Depending on where you live, it may be hard to find a job in the gaming industry, but do not give up!
It is specially hard here in Brazil, so most people start by working in mobile game developers. A friend of mine is working here in São Paulo at the company that developed this game http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bunny-shooter-free-game-physics/id432001345?mt=8, and it has been mildly successful :D
It is not the same as working in Blizzard, but it is a start.

Who cares how 'highend' your job is? It's all about how YOU think about your life and your expectations of it. If you are happy doing what you do and dont have to worry about money, this is the most 'highend' it can get in terms of whats important in life.

2nd. My fondest work memories come from jobs that were typically considered 'high-end'.
Only problem was that minimum wage is a pretty shitty way to pay rent.

Thanks! I appreciate the good wishes. Your friends are right, Ecole Polytechnique is a pretty damn strong school, everyone that I work with is pretty nice and really smart, and it's a really tough school to get into, but it seems to be only tough to get in as a real student (like your friends). If you come here for a PhD, it's a bit easier to get into from what I can tell (though all the grad students here are still pretty top notch, I'm really impressed by them). And, by the time you get to being a post-doc, the requirements to get in are lowered still, so guys like me can show up! @TallMax: Haahhaha true. The problem when graduating in France is that in many schools the number of classes you can miss is very small. One of my friends was doing a course with 4 people, and the teacher would phone him when he was late.
I studied in the Politechnic of São Paulo and Politechnic of Milan, and there they are much more tolerant with these things. Also, no sexy uniforms =(

I spent the last year working as a chemist for a company full of chemical engineers. Even though they all had similar training and abilities, they played quite a few different roles within the company. We had one guy that ran distillation modelling software almost exclusively, we had another guy that was focused on materials (mostly making sure plant/reactor materials are compatible with the process). We had another guy that worked on the reactor design, from catalyst prep to heating design.
Point of the story is, chemical engineering is pretty broad, even within a small company with a focused goal. I'm sure there's even a lot more types of jobs out there for CEs. So overall, I think it's a good field to get into.

I am currently working as a Internal Medicine resident. For studying medicine you need discipline and you have to put yourself through stuff that might be boring/not interesting (f.e. Ophthalmology). You will have to learn a lot, but might feel getting more stupid everyday, because there is not much intelligence involved when learning so many facts. However when you begin to understand what a sophisticated 'machine' our body is, it is actually quite amazing and motivating. On the other side, it was quite depressing to learn and realize how few modern medicine can actually do for many people.
Getting a job is very easy in Germany, because nobody with half a brain wants to work under these shitty conditions at most hospitals. (Most of my friends went to Switzerland) I myself am working at 80%, because I think 40 hours a week + 3 Saturdays/Sundays a month + several 15-hours-days a month is to much for a family man. Nevertheless I am working a minimum of 10 hours overtime a week, which makes it a fulltimejob again I am thinking of reducing to 50% because, because i want to see my daughter (and hopefully my future children) growing up. Someday i want to be a General practitioner.
At the moment I get paid 20€ an hour, which is actually less than i earned as a teacher for becoming nurses during my years at university. Please consider all this info is for studying and working in Germany, it might be quite different in the US.

Environmental is such a poorly defined field, I consider myself part of the environmental and natural sciences. I just started my first real job, I'm working as a P.Geo.I.T. (Professional Geologist in Training) with an Environmental Consulting firm. We do things like respond to pipeline leaks, perform reclamation of gas sites. for those of you in Alberta, we cleaned up the Lake Wabamun spill, sadly before my time here.
My education was in Environmental Earth Sciences, similar to geology.

Guys, I believe there is a thread here in TL that lists tl members who are "specialists" in many areas, including professional areas. It may be useful if you are considering a certain job or field and need any help or advice.
I can't search for it now since I am on my job (so meta), do any of you happen to have the link?
I personally can help if any of you are considering working in strategy/management consulting. Having studied a lot about it last year (using many free websites), I am willing to give back the favor. PM if it is of your interest.

Yeah, materials science is in the intersection physics/chemistry/engineering and it gets put in those departments a bit arbitrarily imo (that is why I asked), but I suppose it is just a function of who secures the funding.
I was in a physics and astronomy department, so technically the PhD is in astrophysics. For all practical purposes though, it's the same as someone who was in a "pure" astronomy department. I do observational star formation. How do stars form, why do some stars form and not others, and under what circumstances? Those are the big overarching questions. If you like image galleries, I recommend the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope archives. Stunning pictures.
[Shameless self promotion] In fact, I am personally involved in this project: http://www.milkywayproject.org/ It is a citizen science project where we ask the interested public to help us identify cool stuff in our own Milky Way galaxy. I'd like to stress that participants get to see and use real, exceptionally high quality data from one of the best telescope in the world (or in this case, in space). It is part of a larger body of projects called the Zooniverse: http://www.zooniverse.org/ where people can help find extrasolar planets, find new Pluto-like bodies, look at galaxies, check out the moon, keep track of solar storms, etc. [/Shameless self promotion]

Jobs sound like a rather unsatisfactory deal.
Most people do things that aren't enjoyable and trade their time for shelter and comfort.
Others give up any greater goals just to get by in life and to propogate. I see no end goal, no change, just stagnation in doing a job. Jobs make me sad.
To force people to contribute to society, you make it so some people to not be able to contribute as much as they could if they were actually given the time to do it without worrying about a stable supply of money.

I teach English at a public junior high school in Fukuoka, Japan. I work for an ALT company, which is not optimal, but getting a direct hire is difficult; impossible in the short term. I am very happy living abroad. I will probably move to South Korea in a couple of years to do the same thing but hopefully save more. Eventually I want to travel around poor countries on my savings and write.
The most important thing to me about my job is that I get to travel a lot and meet interesting people. The job itself, beyond being an enabler, is not all that important to me, but I've found it really rewarding nevertheless. Going to school for politics I always imagined myself getting locked into an academic career track instead of directly helping people.

I'm currently in my 2nd year for my Bachelor of Science in Registered Nursing. Yes, I'm one of THOSE. The social atmosphere is absolutely incredible. Our work load is almost identical to that of med school students, so we work very hard, but we often pull through it together. You almost have to. As a result, we all spend a lot of time together at school, and more recently, out of school. We have a really cool and tight group as a result. We work hard, but we play hard. Really loving University right now.
As for the job itself - I did Nursing Aide work for 7 years and I absolutely loved doing it. It's a wonderful feeling to feel like you're really helping someone when they need it most. I considered being a doctor, but the extra 3 years of school in combination with the more biology driven focus vs patient care focus turned me off of it. I'd much rather be more involved in direct care.

What job offers that for Sociologists that isn't research or statistics? Plenty are offered. NGOs, government PR stuff, both national and local government social and cultural fields and positions are normally highly coveted by a lot of social sciences graduates. Documentary, arts & culture work (like working in modern art museums, film institutes and what not) There's also corporate jobs that are offered to really bright students to handle their human capital stuff (like who gets hired and what not), although these usually are sociologists who have some sort of psychology background. i'm about to start my final year of med school in the UK. the workload isn't nearly as bad as i thought it would be. it is definitely the volume rather than the substance of medicine that makes it challenging and then linking it together. still if you can do cramming for a couple of months before exams, then the rest of the year is quite laid back!
i'd say make sure you get some proper work experience before applying so you know what the job is actually like. also there are so many specialities, there seems to be something for everyone! just make sure you apply to a school that suits your learning style - they really vary over here by how much theory to practical you get each year, or lectures vs group learning,so work out what is best for you!

I'm writing the LSAT October 1st, I hope to become a small-time lawyer. Ideally, I'd like to work for a firm for a few years and then establish my own small practice, and, hopefully, rise a kid. The legal market is actually good in Canada; there is only handful of law schools there, compared to America, and they all have high standards. I'm from Vancouver, but I could see myself as a small town lawyer, living a chill life. Screw all that Hollywood legal bullshit. I just want to live a simple life as a working professional and be an active member of my community.
On a side note, I would never go to law school in the US because the legal market is so incredibly grim for law school grads.

I'm not sure exactly what your grad school program will consist of, but speaking from a UK/SA perspective I can say that the focus shifts a lot from the technical/statistical aspect to actual implementation and knowledge of the different actuarial fields.
So If you want to continue studying advanced statistical methods then you should probably not choose actuarial science (although there is space for that pursuit, it's not the main focus unless you go in to academia most likely! But who goes in to academia with an act sci degree!). Many companies that employ actuaries (your life companies and such) actually also have statisticians on retainer, who the actuaries use to check their stats, consult with etc.
If you choose actuarial science it's also a much more focused path that you're choosing as opposed to statistics, which can have you working in virtually any field out there.
Personally I chose act sci and I love it, but you should just go with whatever you enjoy more (Which can be hard admittedly as you don't actually experience any actuarial work really in undergrad. Try to have a look at the later specialist study material or speak to actuaries to get an idea). There are certainly an abundance of job opportunities for either career world wide.

It really just sucks. Mostly because it's not very challenging. It was challenging in the beginning. And it was awesome. But as time goes on, you don't get that same feeling as you once did.
My educational background goes from High School, to College where I majored in Computer Science, Broadcasting, and Tekken 2. i am still surprised because until the last day for applying i where just going to be studying some random job just so i had something to rely on if i sucked too much at drawing manga (wich still is a dream of mine). But now i am so into game developing so we'll see how it goes

a little question to all the native english speakers:
what exactly is the affiliation of the term "grad student"? if someone says he is a grad student, do you think of him as a phd student or rather as a guy pursuing a masters degree? I know wikipedia says it can mean both, but what comes to your head first when hearing "grad student"?
when I posted some pages ago, i actually meant that im a phd student in statistics.
|
I want to do building, but the engineering end. There's difference IMO between engineering buildings, site planning, environmental (civil engineering) and the architecture of those same things, even though they very often have to work with one another. For this reason, i said " "Engineering and Related Technologies"

Just curious, I am thinking about going to law school after college. How hard is it really to find a job afterwards? I am just nervous because there seems to be a lot of negativity saying that there are too many lawyers in the country and unless you are top of your class in a top law school you won't find a good paying job afterwards.

First thing that comes to my mind is a person pursuing their master's degree. People pursuing their phd are docorate students.
Edit: I forgot to tell you guys what I do! I work at a small company as an IT consultant. I graduated in April with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Finance.

grad student means someone who has graduated from college, and is returning as a student. typically you arent a grad student unless you have a bachelors degree and are heading for your masters.
PhD is yet another level, in which most ppl just say, im working on my doctorate

Back when I graduated, if you get into a top14 law school, then you need to be top 50% or lower (depending on school) to have a good chance of landing a big law firm job that pays 175k starting. It should be somewhat more competitive now not but hopefully the economy will recover by the time you graduate.
Big law firm work sucks dick though, and is arguably not worth the high salary, IMO.

Currently working as a co-manager of a clothes shop - until September where I'll start my studies as multimedia designer. And after those studies I'm starting my own firm. The co-manager job is solely to be able to pay my bills.
Providing clients with basic services as webpage creation, maintenance, support, etc. Currently I'm doing it freelance(ish) for friends and projects I support. For free, since it's hard to get bigger clients without being officially educated under it.
However, I am with 2 others (another designer and a programmer) starting to set up a competitive eSports homepage/tournament located in Denmark whether it's going to be live or not, is still unknown. And after studies I'd like to get more into that. More seriously.

I'm studying physics at university for now, not entirely sure what I plan on doing with it (doubting between master in astronomy or master in theoretical physics). That is, if I even get there in the first place, as I'm failing pretty badly. My "back-up" plan is studying history and then becoming a highschool teacher probably. I like explaining things to people, I find the subjects really interesting and it isn't as hard on the math as physics (lol) so it seems like a good idea. Still, I'm gonna try to not take the "easy way out" immediatly (not to say that history is easy or anything, just that physics is much harder than I had expected).

Just finishing high school right now, I plan to join the Canadian military. I'm either going to be an electronics-optronics technician (If I can get it) or a Cook (What I have the most job experience in). Assuming I can take either job I'm still deciding what I'd enjoy more. I've always loved technology and found electronics very interesting, but I don't have any experience in the field. On the other hand, I have experience cooking and am familiar with it; but unless you have a passion for it or really enjoy cooking it, it can be more grinding than WoW (I'd be cooking for 500-1000 people every day if I choose cook, that's a ton of food prep). I'll probably try to go for being an EO tech, it would be new and challenging and having an education in electrical systems would be very useful if I leave the military.

I work as a line cook doing appetizers, saute and sometimes salads. I don't mind it's pretty fun mostly because of the people I work with. Im also a third year finance major looking forward to being an investment banker somewhere in Canada.

Hmm which jobs are you talking about specifically? Based on what I have read and heard, jobs like investment banking (especially the first several years) require a lot more hours than 9 to 5, as well as weekends. But the finance field is huge, so I suppose it can vary quiet a bit depending on what you exactly do.

I actually love my job.
A consultant buddy told me this the other week:
"If you're doing any kind of hands-on work - you're expendable".
I thought that was the snobbiest thing he's ever said in his life. A cocky thing for him to say, but then he explained himself. It came down to this:
A typical IT guy is a dime a dozen. You can find anyone to build servers, setup switches, run cables, etc etc. How hard is it to find some dude who just passed his CCNA? They're everywhere. Just get that fella to configure the Cisco switches or whatever. Same with MCSE's...dime a dozen. Some UNIX sysadmin...dime a dozen.
A grunt IT fella, with all your running around, the detail-oriented BS you gotta remember(or document), shrug - you're just not respected or nearly on the same level as a designer who just spends all day just talking and schmoozing with clients.
Do you actually talk to those big wigs? Or relate to them on their level? Probably not right? What do they think of you? The truth is probably not what you'd like it to be.
--
My personal take on all this? You're on the right track. I know all this IT hands-on stuff might seem way cool, but when you're asked to do after-hours or 2AM in the morning, it's not so fun anymore. You're probably the guy who gets paged when hardware goes down. Not fun.
Here's another tip. You may feel that mentioning all your certs looks impressive...I did the same thing before too. But here's the trap you'd fall into:
"you listed all these certs...OK...is that ALL you know, then?"
See that? So rude right? Unfortunately? That's what ppl think. Having those obscure IT certs don't mean the same thing as a university degree, an accounting cert, or all the truly well-known titles. It's the sad truth. They don't mean anything to the common man.
My take on this is, if you're required to get the cert by your employer, well it's a gun to your head that you can't deny, so of course you do what you have to. They probably need X number of ppl to hold the cert, so they can retain their gold status, retain something on their support agreements or whatever with their vendor. It isn't totally altruistic when your manager approaches you and says "how would you like to be certified on X".
Bottom line...get to the point where you don't need all these fancy BS certs. You want to be where you don't need to know all the details. That's what those sysadmins are for. You just draw diagrams, know everything on a high level...your pay will skyrocket, and you'll actually be doing LESS work. You'll giggle in your cubicle and think back how much harder you worked as a junior IT kid.
No more running around getting your hands dirty. No more phone calls at 3AM in the morning. Everything you do...within office hours, and that's it. And since there's so much invested into you - they can't just let you know at the drop of a hat. That's the theory anyways.

I guess I do Engineering and related technologies, but I am working as a junior project manager at a serious game / virtual reality / simulation company. Oh, we also do a lot of projects around design, in creative industries.

I am currently a pharmacy student, but I don't think I want to work as a pharmacist full time when I graduate . I was intersted in history in HS, but accepted that oppertunities in history is very limited. I did a year of chemistry in undergrad and ended up liking it. Accepted an offer from pharmacy school thinking that pharmacy would be a good way to make a living, but I am having a lot of second thoughts after I started pharmacy school. Think I prefer an office job relating to pharmaceutical patents or administrative side of drug distribution.

A job in finance and have time for Starcraft...one can hope I guess Most finance jobs are 9-5's. That leaves the entire evening open for starcraft for most people. Don't forget weekends.
Lol are you trolling bro? You're going to be working 50/60 hour weeks nearly every week in most financial professions these days, even accounting.

I work in the IT department of a biometrics company. Plus I have my own consulting company. Some days I don't have time to take a shit. One day I want to switch industries and open a restaurant. Glad I have today off.

Studying HR (sounds funny) and working at the moment full-time at an international recruitment consultancy as part of my studies (I'm only in the company for 6 months because I have classes in 2012 ). A part of my job is to be the one reading the application and being the first to read the CV. Reading the crazy shit people write amazes me ("interests : hockey, soccer, marital life" guess I know what you appreciated in your couple uh :p ).
Aspiring to work in an HR department inside a company after seeing a bit the pure recruitment part.

Master in quantitative finance. Engineer in computer science (will have my degree next year). The results of the poll, so far, aren't suprising. Pretty much what we'd expect.

I'm currently in the process of joining the Royal Navy (UK) as a Submariner Engineer + Sonar systems specialist (fancy job titles hmm)
I chose to go for an engineer's position to pursue my passion for mechanics / system diagnostics and i decided too do it through the forces because of the lifestyle. My dad was in the Military Police so we moved all over the world when i was a kid. Couldn't think of a more exciting lifestyle too grow up through!

Bummmp. I think this is one of the more interesting threads on TL.
My dream (at least for the last 6-7 years) has been to open a big Lan/Arcade center but also to have a videogame store (IE Gamestop) in it as well. I love this idea though I really don't have the means or knowledge to do it but I still hope to make it happen one day.
Currently i'm going to school for Audio Engineering and working 2 jobs. Mainly I work at Walt Disney world as a little peon but hopefully getting my foot in the door here helps me move into a position where I can work on Disney movies or Disney artists with my Audio degree.
