I want to magically create an iceball on the left hand and a fireball on the right hand (say, to make the Medoroa incantation for instance). Due to the symmetry of the problem, let's focus on the right (fire) hand: Would I... a) feel a warm/hot sensation due to the heat of the fireball b) feel a cold sensation because my hand is emitting the energy to create the said fireball, so is even hotter. c) ???
what a dumb question, i love it
my answer is that it depends on the temperature of your hand relative to the flame
+ Show Spoiler +you know how toliet seats are always cold when you sit on them? that's because your butt is at 37°C and the seat is at ambient temperature (say 20°C). you feel "cold" because heat is transferring from your butt to the seat
now, there are times when i've been outside in the cold, cold winter. i come back and sit on the toilet seat immediately. my butt is at a lower temperature than 20°C, so when i sit on the toilet seat, it actually feels warm. that's because heat is transferring from the toilet seat to my butt.
the higher the capacity of the material, the faster heat gets transferred. it's why putting something frozen to thaw in 20°C water is going to thaw faster than leaving it in 20°C air. because 20°C water contains more heat energy than 20°C air.
that's why plastic toilet seats at 20°C ambient don't feel as cold when you sit on them as ceramic toilet seats at 20°C.
i hope this answers your question.

Recently I've been getting Chinese ads on my phome when i browse the internet. I am not in, nor have I ever been to China. Why is this happening? Not that I mind all that much since I adblock everywhere else on my phone.
Which, i guess means it could be tl specific.
Still weird though

Thanks?

When the US entered WWII
+ Show Spoiler + And the spike of employment why would inflation have been a concern with more money going into the hands of everyday people. Rationing I understand but wouldn't have price controls have prevented such a scenario? If not then why didn't Britain have an inflation problem at the start but only after the war ended?
|
That seems very logical to me. There is more money going into the hands of everyday people, but less stuff that they can buy with it because they need to produce wartime stuff. Thus they spend more money on less stuff, which means that stuff gets more expensive ==> inflation. Especially if that money is basically created from thin air by the government to pay for war.
Price controls usually tend to lead to stuff just going on the black market instead. I have no idea why it wasn't a problem in britain, probably they did something differently? Maybe being bombed a lot helps against inflation? But i have no idea how it would do that.

So for now D
Right, that's it!
This is what creates the link between the other answers (relative temperature, endo/exothermic and so on) as well. So in the end, the first step is to determine whether the magic is originating from me/my hand (ie my hand is hotter than the created fire, and colder than the created ice), or gathered from [something in] the environment (ie the other way around).
Now, (almost) nothing prevents me from becoming a wizard!
(Side note: starting to try answering a question as a kid and keeping it unanswered for a long time biased how to look for the answer)

How much information can the human mind absorb and retain ?
I know this is too vague so i will put it in context, lets say I want to read 3 books and retain all or almost all of the information such books contains
should I: a) read one book at a time or b) read the 3 books at the same time
and final question: when I learn something new do I forget something that I already knew ? (relates to first question)
The brain can retain a lot of information. While your head doesn't get physically bigger, you get more creases and groves and stuff in your brain which increases the surface area (like if you stretched it out).
If the three books are different enough then you could read them at the same time. It becomes harder to retain related information because it can use the same paths in the brain when we store and access it. Like trying to remember an old address and confusing it with a newer address. Some believe that once the brain has learned something, it never 'forgets' it. The information is simply buried under lots of other information and the retrieval cues may not be there to access it when you need it. But then all of the sudden you walk in a room that smells like your grandma's and you start to remember things when you were 3.
There is short term memory and working memory and long term memory. Things that enter STM can be stored or discarded depending how much the individual cares about it and if the information is worth it. An example of this is like when you meet someone and forget their name right away, as opposed to you meet someone and associate their name with something you know and don't forget their name

How do I stop stressing over details? I'd like to do things, but then I think of the drawbacks and it makes me anxious

If you figure this out with enough accuracy to be transferable to my life, I will literally blow you by way of thanks.

I'd like to do things, but then I think of the drawbacks and it makes me anxious pinpoint its exact cause: - a control freak would fear when things get out of his control; any possible variation to his plan will cause anxiety. - a social follower/slave would not fear the actual drawbacks but the way his peers will view him after those screw ups; that possible backlash would cause anxiety. - a low self-confidence dude would fear the drawbacks because he feels unable to handle the various outcomes of a situation.
tldr, figure out the actual cause of it first.

How do I change my view of people I have yet to meet from "you are a greedy selfish piece of shit" to something more reasonable that will allow me to possibly communicate with them and maybe stop being so lonely?
|
If you realize that that is a problem, you are probably already halfway to fixing it. I don't know if there are any techniques to help you here. Remember positive contacts you have had instead of the negative ones? Try focussing on positive characteristics instead of negatives when meeting people?

Spend more time with more people. Be around others. As you start to see firsthand that not everyone is a bad person, you might stop prejudging others.

I am more or less the opposite. I assume all people are relatable and likeable in some way. I just havn't found it with everybody yet and some I will meet too few times to pass the initial hurdle. That doesn't mean I like interacting with people more than I have to.
I have yet to meet a truly greedy or evil person.

The real question you have to ask yourself first is : why would you think someone you haven't met yet is greedy and selfish?
