Every European nation boasts of drinking too much alcohol. I have heard consumption of alcohol to be the cardinal virtue of the following nations:
Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, UK, Denmark.
However, there is some falseness of voice in excoriating this thing. Saying that your country drinks too much is as much a boast as a derision in every context I've heard. In Europe there seems to be some claim to social standing based on the amount you can drink.

In my opinion Canada has a lot of kind of oddly placed patriotism, there aren't that many super unique things about Canada as a culture so "watershed" moments like the Battle of Vimy Ridge get maybe more play then they warrant. I guess that's the kind of thing that happens when "multiculturalism" is supposed to define you as a country. You've got to build some sort of identity for yourself with what history you have. Not trying to disrespect the chaps who fought at Vimy or anything... I dunno it's kind of hard to explain without watching Canada Day specials and other "home-grown" broadcasting that the CBC ships out(they blur the line between feel good patriotism and gag worthy back patting sometimes).
I also have a bit of a problem with Canadians often defaulting to arbitrarily comparing us to the states to come to positive conclusion about Canada. We struggle with many environmental and financial issues, but a to common conclusion is often to say problem A is worse in the states(true or not) and that settles it we can procrastinate till the situation gets worse .
Don't get me wrong I love Canada, even Quebec ^^, these are just some of our "societal quirks" that irk me.
Edit: I just thought about a great example for my first point, Vancouver 2010. Canada can't decide on how to represent our cultural identity to the world. So they hit the ol' fallback plan of pulling the first nations peoples from wherever we dropped them after our last international set piece to base our opening/closing ceremonies around. Now don't get me wrong the first nation's deserve their moment in the spotlight certainly, but it just seems like we kind of can't think of something else ever haha. Plus after the events it's always back to the government having disputes with first nations not the begrudging hand holding they do in front of the rest of the world lol >_<.

In the Philippines:
Abortion is illegal but over ten thousand girls have it yearly in private houses and shady clinics.
You can get a prostitute if you know where to look INSIDE A SCHOOL. Note: You only need to use the equivalent of ten cents of coin OR a white handkerchief to get one of them. Also, if you're lucky, they go for less than 10$. If you're REALLY LUCKY, they're smoking hot.
A Meth hit here costs 2$. And you can get free weed if you live in certain areas of the country.
You can smoke cigarettes even if you are only 4 years old and not get caught. Drinking at 6-7 years also happens.
If you know someone or are very smart, you can get luxury items for half their retail price, or even less.
Our government cannot even pass a population-control law because it is too scared of the various churches. And you'll never see a contraceptive commercial in prime-time TV, ever.
Five percent of the population subscribe to a church that promises to deliver all of its votes to a single politician every election; and the damn thing's headquarters is across our premiere state-funded institution, who have anti-government and religion hypocrites who can't even get the balls to actually protest against them.
Politicians change political parties every six years. Or less. Or they make their own.
A sex scandal is worth getting the Senate to call some meetings.
Our government has not recovered a single cent from the plundered funds of our former President, who ran again after being convicted and actually got second place. Another President has had four impeachment attempts and all of them failed.
A former governor who massacred around fifty journalists and civilians has not had his case even start yet.
Some estimates claim there is one loose firearm for every one hundred people.
Our policemen practice their hostage-rescue "tactics" on a rusted 70's era bus with no windows, no seats and no tires.
These policemen don't have gas masks, battering rams, door breaching rounds, explosive breaching charges, and submachine guns or PDWs.
Our military and police arm the ONLY Communist insurgency in the world armed primarily by Western weapons.
Our Muslim seperatist group is a MILF.

Stuff that sucks about Germany:
Politics. Especially seeing those politicians that have no idea about something trying to talk about it as if they were professionals on the subject. Well, but I guess you got that in a lot of countries. The weather could be a little better, but I'm actually quite fond of this country

Yeah pretty much. Whoever can drink more but get less drunk is like a total baller.
EDIT: Translation for moltke
I can relate with this assertion. In such a society, he who possesses the most drinking prowess is to be regarded as a man of high esteem.

It's not uncommon to watch a news program attack Asians "taking our jobs" and the rise in bashing of Indian students and the belief that it's their fault makes me sick. Our two major political parties are almost exactly the same and pander to the ridiculous far right extremists.
I've always wanted to go to Australia and work. Is the racism directed at backpackers and Europeans as well?
It's interesting. While racism is a terrible thing - I've read about the gang rapes performed by Lebanese immigrants as racist acts against Australian women and it got me thinking: If something like that happened in Sweden, would I personally be able to separate my hate for those individuals from my hate for Lebanese people? I'm really not sure. I'd like to hope that I could but I'm not sure. Anger and frustration are powerful feelings. Same thing about terrorism, I've been thinking about how I would react if Islamic terror struck Sweden. Would I become more nationalistic? This is the opposite of on-topic but what I like about Sweden today is our lack of national pride. Nationalism is generally frowned upon, it pits people against people. Would our views on the subject change if we had enemies?

I hate Holland because the police is too busy milking the working class instead of taking care of actual crimes. They have yearly ticket goals, so when November comes they will stake out in city centres and give out tickets to bike riders without adequate lighting. What irks me about this is that it is not done in the name of safety but merely to raise enough funds. But when your bike gets stolen (which will happen to you, regardless of the place you live) you will get a notification the very next working day that the case has been closed (and will remain unsolved). In a city of say 100.000 inhabitants the same 10 people will be responsible for 80% of bike thefts. I've had the same guy offer me a stolen bike at least 10 times. Once he offered me a 2 different bikes in the span of half an hour. If you molest a child of rape a girl, worst case scenario you get 2 years in jail, with a cell all to yourself and pay-tv with porn and everything, but if you drive to your work and speed with 4 km/h over the limit you get fined 40 euro's. Just recently police were staking out a highway where a temporary speedlimit of 70km/h was enforced due to roadwork. Of the 8000 people obsevred, 5000 of them were caught speeding. instead of maybe looking into the possibility that the speedsign situation was inadequate, they just kept fucking the people that were merely going to their job.

The only thing I dislike is that Sweden is pretty bland, nothing ever happens here. That's probably a good thing though, but I don't like it.
I'm trying to think of other stuff, but all the stuff I can think of ends up positive, atleast for me.

We're too cautious and political correct, we label people with different view rasist and stop listening to whatever points they might come up with.
Our government can't decide wether or not to actually excist lately, I guess we saw belgium and thought it would be a funny idea to try.
Soft drugs policy gets tougher even though we have one of the lowest addiction percentages in the world.
Every time there is wind from the west, we get rain from england. Everytime there is wind from the east, we smell germany. Lose lose situation :> ( really, we love you secretly ).
Houses are too frickin' expensive, thinking of living near the dutch border in germany just for the cheaper prices.
Our airport is too expensive. Our restaurants are too expensive.
Thats about it I think.

I would say social drinking, not excess drinking is a hallmark of the UK. We drink quite a bit, but we're nowhere near Europe's heaviest drinkers...
Except in Scotland. There was a study recently that said that, if Scotland was its own country, it'd be the second heaviest drinker of alcohol per capita in the world. The UK as a whole would be 12th or something around there.
I thought that boasting about alcohol consumption isn't a feature of European nations, rather its a common feature in the youth in any alcohol-drinking country. Imported US tv suggests there are "Frat Boys" with similar views on the other side of the pond.
