Do any of you guys know if its possible to plug a guitar directly in to an onboard soundcard using a big to little jack adapter?

I recommend you get a usb interface. I have a Line 6 UX1 and it works really really well; basically it comes with a software that emulates effects and amps, and they actually sound really really nice. You can expand your tone library by buying plug-ins online too.

There's ports going out to so whenever im recording stuff on my pc i'll just plug my guitar in, choose my amp/effect chain on the pc, then send a jack to my amp to hear myself and just record with Audacity. It's a really cheap setup, but it sounds great.

Right then that's what i'll do
I had a small Orange valve amp that was absolutely beautiful but i had to sell it because i'm poor.

Thanks for your help.

By the way, this is my guitar:

Its a Fender Modern Player Jaguar. Basically its quite a cheap version (cheaper than fender, better than Squire) but very different version of the Jag. The P90s sound excellent!

I've never tried plugging it directly into an onboard soundcard, but recording with the onboard soundcard and a random microphone, it'll create a small delay on each layer you create, so you can't record on top of a track or your own stuff.

You can get some pretty cheap, nice USB soundcards... I used to play around with them some

Here's some stuff I created directly into a USB soundcard years ago... This is like 6 or 7 years ago I thikn.. dont remember really

P90's are fucking awesome.

I have an SG Classic (basically a standard with P90's), and it's a great great guitar.

edit: speaking of which, i don't think i posted my guitars yet, so here we go:

I've been an acoustic player for a few years, thinking about picking up an electric. No idea where to start though - what do I need, and where's the best place to start researching it?

I had a ~$700 Takamine acoustic for the last five years, but it's broken several times (was VERY sensitive to hummidity, and I'm a college student in upstate new york. No a/c, very poor heat, no consistency in living situation, etc) This time there's no way to really repair it AFAIK.

In an electric, I'm looking for something cheap that I will stand up to the elements - I don't care if it has the greatest sound in the world, I can upgrade later. I just need something to play . Tips?

What's your budget? What do you want to play? What kind of sound are you looking for (single coil vs humbucker guitars are pretty different)?

edit: if you need something that really can take a beating more than anything, i recommend something from Squire/Fender. As the saying goes, it takes a luthier to make a Gibson, but for a Fender a decent mechanic is enough. Telecasters can be used as weapons if necessary.

+1
Whenever I think of a sturdy "working-man's guitar" a Telecaster comes to my mind. Maybe it's because Bruce idk.
Look into the Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster range. Played one a couple of weeks ago and it was outstanding for the price.

Strats are cool too, if you are looking for something insanely versatile nothing beats an HSS strat

ah, fuck the term "starter guitar". i have a $2000 guitar and a 15 year old acoustic which probably sold for $20. guess which one i mostly use and have a lot of fun with (:

your guitar looks absolutely amazing. i'd even trade it for my personal favourite guitar!

ps: i remember certain famous recordings of nirvana which sound like they were done with a really really cheap guitar

Ibanez is your best bet. There's Epiphone but I think Ibanez offers more for similar prices. Solid build and they look real sweet. I have small hand so I like their necks, very easy to get around. Only thing is not many stores carry the semi-hollows so it will be harder to test them out.

Not sure about new ones, but a friend used to have an early 2000's BC rich warlock, whatever series it was that had the floyd, and that thing was actually really versatile, like it actually got a better blues sound that it did a metal sound, which was amazing given how they look.

I agree. They are insanely versatile.

I may be biased though.

USA Standard Strat HSS in Sienna Sunburst. I had to special order it since nowhere local carried Sienna Sunburst. I got it direct from the factory. It was a grad gift to myself. This picture doesn't even come close to doing the finish justice, the wood grain barely shows in this. In person it is significantly nicer and the wood grain is much more pronounced. If it were day time I could get a much nicer shot of it.

To the left is a MIM 50's Precision Bass with a thick maple neck with heavy gloss fingerboard. To the right is my first guitar, a Lake Placid Blue 1995 MIM Fender Strat modified with a new nut and completely redone electronics (including a set of Noiseless pickups. I adore those). For being an MIM and being kinda beat up it sure plays nice. It needs a setup right now really badly though. When I have a day off I am going to take it apart and clean everything up nicely then tighten up the truss rod a bit since it has a bit of a bow right now.

Are those the Dunlop red picks you are using? If so, high five.

Speaking of strats, i'm thinking swapping the stock pickups on mine. Anyone got any tips for some nice vintage ish single coils? I use that guitar for blues and some clean/crunch on classic rock songs mostly.

Fender Strat was my choice back when I played. Retired now, but miss the old bar bands.

Was always partial to Seymour Duncans for pu's. I think their website gives you a sampling of the different products.
