I've been playing on an epiphone lennon signature (acoustic) for a long time since my stepdad sold his Fender Strat. I'm mainly interested in post-punk/rock guitar, my main influences are guys like Johnny Marr, Jonny Greenwood, Frank Zappa, Kevin Shields and Michio Kurihara.

Disclaimer: This is all personal opinion from someone who has been playing guitar and bass for nearly 20 years and listens to similar music as the musicians you listed ( I don't listen to much modern metal, modern jazz fusion, math rock, etc ).

At that price range you have a couple of options for the tone you are going for based off of the influences you named:

I'd start off by narrowing down to 3 of Fender's models (nothing against Gibson, but you'll be better off matching your influences with a Fender)

1) Fender Strat
2) Fender Telecaster
3) Fender Jazzmaster

Go to a music store and play all 3, see which you like the feel of the most. You can always tweak the sound a bit with your amp/pedals/new hardware but the actual feel of the guitar is tough to modify so get one that is comfortable to play, otherwise you'll be fighting against it the whole time.

Once you find one you like the feel of, your price range will limit you to the particular make/model. Fender's Squier line has improved greatly over the years and you can find a new one for around $300.
Guitar Center link with all of their sub 300 Fender Squiers:
+ Show Spoiler +
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier,Electric-Guitar-Guitar,New-Gear.gc?extup=Fender,200-300&ipp=50

The name snobs will sometimes scoff at the Squier on the headstock, but with a proper setup (~$50 at a nearby shop) this will sound leagues better than an off-the-shelf, Made-in-America full-blooded Fender version. And you'll have saved about 60-70% of the cost. Tell the guitar tech what style of music you are going for and they will setup the guitar to emphasize those qualities.

Edit: Most of the upgrades you can buy for a standard Fender will fit on a Squier, meaning you can always upgrade any of the "sub-par" components like pick-ups/tuners/bridge/nut piece by piece to further customize your tone. And you can do this as you get the cash instead of dropping a ton at once.

Once you settle on the guitar, walk around the store and plug it into every amp you can find in your price range and run it through the gauntlet. By only spending $350 on your now professionally setup guitar, you have another $350 to get any kind of small combo amp you could possibly want.

Look at the Squier Classic Vibe's they have Tele's, Strat's and I believe Jag's and Jazzmaster's too.
I have the Classic Vibe 60's Strat, great guitar for the price and definately on par with the MIM Standart.
If I had to chose again, though, I'd get the Telecaster (A Tele suits any kind of music really, even Death Metal). I recently tried a Classic Vibe 50's Tele, it just didn't feel like a $350 guitar at all. It doesn't say "Fender" on the headstock though, which is kind of sad, but hey.

I just wanna add one thing, you probably do NOT want to buy a Jaguar. That thing has the most atrocious hardware you could ever ask for in a guitar. You can read up on that online - most of the people who bought Jag's ended up buying parts from the Mustang model and switching stuff around. Only buy that thing if you're planning on modding it heavily.
(I own one and it's just lols all around.)

Until You know exactly what tone you want, just go to a guitar store and play a few different guitars on different amps. The guys there will help you out if they know you're interested in buying. I remember really enjoying playing Ibanez's and Jackson's when I was in a punk band in high school (never really liked strats). But everyone has their personal preference, and since you're not picky about tone, you have a lot of guitars and amps to work with.

I've been playing guitar for quite some years, but ever since I started doing ESPORTS work (past 2-3 years) I haven't really gotten to play a whole lot. I recently got my guitar fixed at the local shop to start playing again, so I thought I'd do a little flash. If I ever reach a full set up again, I'll show you then.

It's an MIJ (Japanese) Fender Telecaster from the 80's. These guitars are fairly cheap, around a thousand bucks, but play and sound fantastic. Some of them are even on par with some of the actual American vintage guitars from the 60's and 70's.

It's a T-Rex Replica and a Keeley TS-9.

The signal way is Guitar > old GCB-95 Crybaby from somewhere in the 60's or 70's, I don't remember -> Tuner -> Keeley BD-2 -> Vintage 60's TS-808 -> Katana Boost -> T-Rex Replica -> Amp.

My amp's been touring with The Blue Van the last couple of years, but they just returned from their USA trip so I'll be looking to get that back in a week or something when I can arrange a car to pick it up. I'm so excited to be playing again.

I'm on the lookout for a specific external soundcard for guitar, plug'n'play, to the computer.

Currently, I have this: http://line6.com/podstudiogx/ It's nice but the sound isn't great and it's old and starting to break down.

I remember going to a music store few years back, they showed me a product that looked advanced, but was relatively cheap. My mind might be playing tricks on me now but i recall that one of the features was pre-made tuning in the software that comes along with the product, so that you can select a tuning on the software, without having to tune your guitar to it. When i ask in the store, nobody seems to know what I mean.

Anyone heard of this? If not, can anyone give a few tips of good, not too pricy, products similar to what I have or what I'm after?

That s-series ibanez looks amazing! I haven't seen it with that red glossy look (perhaps the wax adds some shine). S-series will definitely be my next 6 string. After I went through all the local music stores and played almost every guitar, the s-series was just sooo nice, especially for the price.

That agile 8 looks beautiful too. The other guitarist in my band has an agile 8 but his is the wooden finish, looks nice and classy.

Does anyone else use a Blackstar amp?

I play predominantly fingerstyle on my steel string nowadays, but every once in a while I crank up my Blackstar HT5 stack and really love its sound. Other than that, it's a sick piece of furniture.

Does anyone have any idea about what's the best strat up to something like 350 €?
I don't play electric enough to justify buying a real Fender and I'm not sure I want a Squire.

3TS is a must, and I'd prefer to buy it used.

Thanks, man! The natural wood finishes look really nice with the Agiles.

That Hellraiser looks brilliant! Congrats on getting it!

I've used my friends HT Stage 100 head, and I wasn't too blown away by it, but it was still a quality amp-- just not for me.

As for Strats, you could always check eBay and Craigslist to see if you can find one for cheap. If not, a Squire with a good set-up feels pretty good, especially for the price. Good luck finding one !

Mine is the HT5, which is designed to be a living room stack. It's plenty loud, but it sounds awesome at lower volumes as well.

I'm thinking of getting an ESP LTD ST-203, but I play so much outside that I'd need a "pocket amp" to attach headphones to...

Mexican strats go from like 450 (new) and are very very very worth the money imo. My friend has one and it's a really sweet guitar. If you want to go cheaper you could try the classic vibe series from squire, i heard they are not too bad.

I think this is a good idea. Of course, some people know exactly what they want or believe in a particular brand. There are others of us who know we would like to play a guitar but aren't sure what. I have to agree that I think it would be really fun to try several different ones out. It is good that you mentioned with different amps too. I actually am thinking of buying an acoustics guitar for now though.

I wouldn't go with an interface made for guitarists - they tend to be overpriced garbage. You could probably find a better and more reliable interface for the same price, if not less. Then, all you need is a guitar software suite (or a POD-like machine).

What you're talking about is pitch-shifting and is something you can do with freeware plugins.

If you're locked on getting a 'guitar interface', I guess that's fine; it cuts out some of the hassle. Check the line 6 product line again. I can't think of another company right now.

Assuming you know how to use VSTs, I found this with just a bit of googling:
http://www.ochremusic.com/specMonkey.zip

I bet there are better ones if you look harder.
