I get the urge to eat mac n cheese once every few months, buy the boxed kind, eat it, and remember why I don't eat it. So basically, I now have like.. twenty boxes of mac&cheese in my cupboard and I have no idea how to get rid of it.
I've looked up recipes, but I keep on finding recipes that either are about making mac& cheese from scratch or involve baking with an oven(don't have one, not really used with Korean food).
So, yeah.
Anyone have any practical, easy recipes to make boxed mac&cheese actually taste good? Or should I give up, throw away the cheese sauce, and just use the macaroni 'ㅅ';

You crazy australians. In all seriousness though this does taste amazing
If you just want to make it taste good without having to make your own recipe, just dice up some spam into little blocks, fry 'em and then toss 'em into the mac'n'cheese right after the mac'n'cheese is done. Tastes great if you like spam. If you don't, then you can do bacon I suppose.
-use butter, not margarine or oil -try fresh ground pepper -try fried sliced up pieces of hot dog and then mix it in when you add the cheese sauce(can use fancy sausage rather than the hot dog if you're a baller,) -try bacon -add some sriracha and stir it up during the cheese sauce face
try diff combinations of this. i wouldn't use black pepper+sriracha for example
yeah just poor real ingrediants in and it will be fine some meat, some mushrooms, prooper chesse. I really like BBQ sauce with cheesy pasta but I'm fairly certain thats just me. Everyone I've said that to has looked at me with disgust and then not talked to me for a couple of days.
depends on why you don't like it, if its the cheese you find horrible you can attempt to change the flavor by adding in other cheeses and sauces, if its the texture of the mac I suggest mixing in other pasta and adding in meats of your choice. Either way you're gonna have to work to make it usable, and in the end it boils down to making otherwise tasty food mediocre to make your unappetizing mac and cheese eatable, its your call if you want to do that.
You have 20 boxes of shit you don't like but are willing to spice it up, I would experiment man! If you don't like how it turns out you've wasted nothing!
This is oen of those foods that you remember being awesome from your childhood. But upon trying it again you realize how disgusting it is after the first bite. I fall for this trap once in a while and it sucks. Makes you wonder if it was really that bad all along. At least you can salvage the pasta from all those boxes.

I guess I don't understand why you think it tastes bad, I love the stuff. Honestly though the pasta is low quality, but it's still pasta. Just cook it like you would any other pasta and add red sauce or whatever you like. You don't have to use the cheese powder.
I like to reduce the cheese and the macaroni by about 100% each, and then add a steak to it. Tastes great!
In other words, you can make mac and cheese less bad, but make it good would be very difficult. Best mac and cheese I made was by baking it after it was done boiling.
I ate it with some diced Spam once. It was delicious but then again I have fucking terrible taste and I'm going to die before I'm 30.
Next time I'll use actual meat like chicken breast or something. Usually my roommate buys and eats the Mac n' Cheese plain so I haven't really experimented much.
I'd definitely recommend spicing it up + adding fresh cheese WHICHEVER you may prefer, Parmigiana, Provolone, Cheddar, Mozzarella, and Swiss!
I would probably BOIL it with quarter water/quarter milk/ half chicken broth for added flavor to begin with. Then add a bit of whichever cheese I want. Then decide if you want to variate with either Meats or vegetables. Other than that I'd just add salt+papper+crushed chili pepper or sriracha, as well as whichever spices you personally enjoy, cumin, taragon etc.
Finish with some chopped Parsley garnish ontop and your good ^^ A bit more effort than Mac&Cheese deserves so you might as well make 2-3 packets worth, but at least you'll feel like your actually cooking something worth eating, as opposed to "junk".
you could try make it thicker and then pop it in the fridge then cut it into squares and bread it and deep fry it.
though seriously pasta and cheese is so easy. get a tablespoon of butter with a tablespoon of flour in a pan and heat it gently till the butter melts and starts cooking the flour slowly. use a whisk and start whisking in milk bit by bit till it reaches a nice consistency. add grated cheese and finish off with salt and pepper. the mix should be slightly runny since after you take it off the stove the drop in temperature will make it a lot thicker.
mix with cooked pasta. seriously too tasty too easy i make this more than i should and always eat it all. if you have a special occasion (like a girl coming over) you can boil the milk with black pepper corns, some onion slices and a bay leaf first to make bechamel sauce.
A few good ideas here. I like the hot sauce suggestions, Tobasco or Sriracha. Also the hot dog type suggestions. A big one is simply adding a good amount of salt to the water as you put it on to boil. This will season the noodles and take away some of the cardboard taste. On of my personal favorites is a bit of garlic, powder or fresh, it's really good in Mac & Cheese.
I like to make something like this: boil pasta, drain it, pour some olive oil, some chili flakes, mix it, then add grated cheese - done. Prolly easier than making instant stuff and better if you use good cheese...
While it's cooking, cook up some vegetables, heat up some red or pesto sauce, and possibly grill some chicken if you're feeling adventurous. Toss the cheese sauce out. Mix all your tasty ingredients together, and enjoy a real dinner.
Cook the mac n' cheese normally but when you add the cheese and milk put in a can of tuna also. It like a cheap tuna casserole. It's surprisingly good imo.
Add a half a can of Rotel. Its basically a can of chopped tomato's , some herbs and spices, peppers. Usually added to velveta cheese to make a chip dip, but I find adding it to pasta dishes like "mac n cheese" adds exactly what is needed.
It really is a bummer though that you don't have an oven, You could add some scalloped potatoes and bake them in with a tortilla crumb topping for another quite awesome meal.
Try it out, I think you will like it.
I wouldn't recommend hot sauce unless your one of those people that really likes it. Hot sauce doesn't work well without something crisp and clean to wash your palate (like lettuce in a taco / burrito). Straight up putting hot sauce on a cheese dish is just really gross to me.

:D Brother where have you been all my life I love doing that too!!! What people don't get that it thickens up the cheese sauce and sticks to the noodles with BBQ on it.
and a little chinese hot sauce that I've found is amasing.
Fast for a day or so, then enjoy! Hot sauce works pretty well too... Honestly I don't have a good answer, I still have three sitting in my dorm room from last semester T.T
Bacon and zucchini is a good combination, as is chicken and broccoli. Cayenne pepper should perk it up a bit, too. If you're really adventurous, try some chopped apples. It's not my preference, but some people really love the combination of flavors.
20 minute Mac and Cheese with lots for leftovers, maybe.
1. Begin melting 4 tablespoons of butter in a pan over low-medium heat, add in 4 tablespoons of flour halfway through the melting process and let them cook together(stirring constantly) for a few minutes. 2. Add 2 cups of warm milk(or cream if you are a skinny bastard) and whisk it over medium heat until it begins to simmer and thicken. 3. Throw in some of that spice shit(I like salt, pepper, mustard powder, chili flakes and Worcestershire sauce) 4. Add grated sharp cheddar and/or whatever other cheese you like. This white sauce can take a lot of cheese, so play around with however much you like. 5. Stir in your cooked pasta and A) Eat it as it is because it's already delicious, or B) Bake it in the oven with some breadcrumbs(preferably panko and some seasoning on top, like a snowstorm of chili flakes because you are a fucking manly man.) 6. Spend the next month making this and only this.
To avoid this situation in the future i suggest you stop buying "Mac n' cheese" and start getting "Velveta shells and cheese" , real cheese, real good. None of that powder crap. Use the scalloped potato / tortilla crumb baked topping trick and serve it with a side of green beans.
tuna or fish, spam, bacon, cheese, chicken with grated cheese ontop, hot chilli sausage, make a tomato sauce sauce fpr pasta my fav. melted cheese and brocolli mm.

I'm pretty sure he explicitely stated that he needed advise for making it without the use of an oven though.
I experimented a lot with mac n cheese a lot last year in college. I would use any of the following in various combinations and it always turned out better than just plain old mac n cheese.
- Pepper - Salt - Ranch Dressing (YES! SO good!) - Chicken (cut it up into smallish pieces) - scrambled eggs - Hot sauce (Tapatio) - Peas - A1 sauce (don't knock it before you try it :D ) - Bacon (microwaveable kind) - Steak - Tuna - hamburger meat
For the meat products you can just microwave them until cooked fully, or even buy a bag of pre-cooked meat pieces that you can just heat up. Can't remember any more but give it a shot!
Add 1 quarter stick of butter, and 1/4 cup of milk. Stir it in until it's mixed up pretty well, and then eat it. I think it tastes pretty good. Oh also, don't cook it in the microwave.
I used to love that stuff as a kid. My best friend and his family were american immigrants and his mom always did mac & cheese when I went over there lol.
Two boxes of Mac and Cheese- Throw out the pasta in one, keep the cheese sauce. Can of tuna. Peas.^
This right here. Instead of sacrificing the pasta in one I just melt some real cheese in though. I use some kind of Safeway brand Mac and Cheese which is actually fantastic though so I don't know how it compares to anything else since I'm addicted to it.
Oh, and when I was a kid my dad would make Mac an Cheese with some Bovril in it and that was pretty good too, but I'm sure most boulion type stuff would help.
If you are wanting to add some protein to it use Ham (all these people suggesting hot dogs, ewww) Use a good real meat, just add some strips of cooked ham to it, it would play well with the cheese, much more so than a...hot dog =/
I second adding in fresh diced tomatoes. The biggest problem with instant mac-n-cheese is the slightly cloying/artificial taste of powdered cheese, and the fresh tomatoes cut's that very well.

I eat a safeway brand as well but its also billions of times better just as is that anything kraft ever made in the mac n cheese department.
IMO you can't fix KD but if you get some of the less gross versions some of them even contain things like real cheese (if dried out and powdered) and can taste quite good with just a sprinkling of oregano and Tabasco.
Mix the cheese powder with whatever butter is indicated on the directions, then add some unflavored *yogurt. Top with a dash of cayenne pepper or fresh ground black pepper and some parmesan cheese. Yum!
*(Unflavored yogurt is sharp and tangy like cheese)
Here's some stuff I like to put on KD: - hot sauce (frank's red hot) - dried garlic powder - chili powder - boil and cut up hot dogs - add in some cheddar cubes

I assumed that he had a stovetop or a hot plate. Or do Koreans make all their food in the microwave?
it really surprised me to see so many people that hate mac and cheese, and so few that like it as is. some ground beef or hot dogs go well with it. I like it better plain
I bought a lot of mac and cheese before I found out how easy it is to make the sauce from scratch.
Melt some butter and stir in an equal amount of flour. Add some milk Melt in cheese. Add any extras you want.
Ratios are about 2 tablespoons butter/flour, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup or more cheese.
If you're a lazy bastard like me, you can do the above steps in a microwave, in the bowl you're going to eat from. The timing works out that you finish the sauce slightly before the pasta is done, so start the pasta first.

Yeah. REAL mac and cheese is awesomely good, craft is... well craft. What you have to do is cook your Macaroni in stewed tomatos, strain the water out, and immediately dump the hot macaroni into sharp american cheese. When I say sharp american I don't mean that processed crap. I'm talking real vermont cheddar. Craft has nothing on it.
throw away the cheez (it's not cheese), keep the macaroni. then boil the mac, drop and egg, some soysauce, maybe some miso powder, some laver, peas, and ham...now you got a treat.
Alright, I've got the recipe of all recipes for you, so listen carefully.
What you need:
8 oz Extra Sharp White Chedder 12 oz Cottage Cheese 8 oz Sour Cream 1/4 cup Parmasean 1/4 cup Bread Crumbs 1/4 cup Butter Can of Tomato Soup
Boil the noodles until they're soft (about a lb of them, or 16 oz) then put them into a pan similar to the one I have shown. Mix the cheeses together (grate the cheddar and parmasean), and then stir the bread crumbs and melted butter together, using it to make a thin layer over the top of the mac. Bake it at 350º, while boiling up some tomato soup. When it's done baking, add the soup and stir. Voila!
There are ups and downs to the internet, but god damn it I love not knowing how to do something and just googling it. Especially food. Countless times I've thought something like 'How the fuck do you actually make scrambled eggs?' or 'How do I make chicken that isn't going to kill me?' and a few seconds later I know the answer.
How do I change a bicycle tire? What the fuck do squirrels even eat? How can I safely unlodge this from my ass? Wtf does 'versimilitude' mean?
Maybe you're doing it wrong or something cause it's delicious imo and I'm a picky eater. I've had it with black pepper and that's pretty good. Usually I put some ketchup on it though. Throw some cut up hot dogs in there and you're good to go.
donate it if you dont want to eat it even with other stuff added its still gonna taste like shit might aswell give it to some1 who needs to eat and doesnt care about the taste.

Is it bad that I actually like the boxed Kraft mac n cheese? I grew up on the crap, and then I started buying the Velveeta shells n cheese. Then I reverted and went back to enjoying the "cheese" of Kraft's. It really depends on how you make it. Sometimes it just tastes like noodles, other times it tastes amazing.
The key is to use at most only a splash of milk, otherwise it is too watery. I also found that the key part of the preparation is the butter. Too much and it will just taste like butter...too little and it will taste like crap. I use about 3 spoons of butter. Then you mix the cheese in, and if you want to ensure it will be cheesy then add in slices of cheese (if you're poor) or some sliced cheese from a block (better).
throw away the cheese sauce imo; but I think that stuff tastes pretty awful. i'm sure you can improve it by mixing in cooked meat (hot dog slices, bacon bits, hell you could cook up some ground beef and mix that in if you wanted) or some ACTUAL cheese (parmasean?) and/or spices that go well with cheese (cayenne/red pepper, cumin, whatever). use your best judgement.
Never liked their cheese sauce either. Have you tried velveeta sauce? It's really good with mac & cheese (at least to me it is). You basically take some velveeta and mix it with milk, microwave that or put over a stove-top burner and let it melt. Bam! You got some nice cheese sauce to go with your macaroni.

flour butter + milk and cheese is the base of pretty much every home made mac and cheese.

apparently making a white sauce is "classic french cuisine" :o
have to add milk slowly to the flour/butter mix, and stir constantly!
I enjoy bread crumbs on my mac n' cheese always. Flash it in the oven until its golden brown, you can season with Italiano if you like that kinda thing. A extra layer of cheese on the bread crumbs is nice, I like the texture. Doing this with cut up hot dogs or with a pasta sauce and seasoned ground beef is tasty.
Ingredients: 1 bottle of red wine 2 mac & cheese boxes 1 lb of bacon ground black pepper broodwar or starcraft 2 vods
1. Drink a glass of wine. 2. Bake bacon at 400 F. 3. While bacon is in oven, boil water for pasta. 4. Drink a glass of wine. 5. Cook pasta and follow cheese sauce instructions on box. 6. Crumble bacon and black pepper into finished mac & cheese. 7. Drink a glass of wine. 8. Enqueue starcraft vods and watch while eating.

Usually ~30-40 mins. Wait until you see the bottom of the pan boiling on the edges, and the top looks golden brown on the edges.

I grew up on instant mac n cheese, so I don't see what's so disgusting about it :< I think it's better than most mac n cheese I've had, that baked stuff you get at 99% of restaurants is nasty.
That said, try adding some other cheese that you like. Like for me, I add two slices of American cheese - makes it thicker and tastes really good. Try some Parmesan too. Add some broccoli too, that could be good.
Probably better to ask a website with more American girls. You probably have to bake some of the good recipes, but here's some stuff from the internet:
2 boxes Kraft Mac and Cheese 2 cups of diced ham 1 bell pepper 1 onion chopped 2 cans stewed tomatoes 1 ½ cups extra sharp cheddar cheese 1 cup of Colby cheese 1 quart V-8 Juice
This is such an easy meal to make; in a skillet, sauté the bell pepper and the onions. Boil your macaroni and drain. Put the macaroni back in the pot. Add the cheese flavoring that comes in the Kraft Mac and Cheese box. Add in the V-8 juice. Add the onions and peppers, and the stewed tomatoes and ham. Now as the mixture begins to boil drop in all the cheese and let it melt. Your meal is done. That is it! It is great left over too! My daughter will eat it cold! Serve with Texas Toast and you have a complete meal.
Here is another way I fix Kraft Mac and Cheese. This is for baked macaroni and cheese. This is also easy and quick to do.
Kraft - Baked Mac and Cheese Casserole
2 boxes Kraft Mac and Cheese 1 bell pepper 1 onion 1 egg 1 can of Carnation Evaporated Milk 1 ½ cups sharp Vermont cheddar cheese 1 cup Colby cheese Parmesan cheese (how much you want) ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg
Mix some roast chicken in with it. I would be inclined to say bacon, but that'd be too salty / yuck. There isn't really much you can do with Mac n cheese if you don't like it how it is; haha.
The noodles are fine, it's just that boxed cheese sauce that's disgusting. I'd suggest making your own sauce or just eating the noodles plain and throw out that garbage sauce that comes with the box.
iirc, one time on SotG incontrol recommended adding some ketchup to it. Some other people in this thread have recommended that so apparently it does have some credibility.
Or make the cheese sauce from real cheese instead of using the powdered crap - though honestly, if you're going this far, you might want to be looking at making mac&cheese from scratch.
Thanks for all the comments <3 didn't think that this many people would respond.
Think I'm going to try mixing in meat & actual cheese and tone down the butter. I'll also probably try making the soup that igotmyown suggested or the chili thing someone else suggested.
If I can't make it taste better for me, I always have the option of dumping all of it onto my brother =] That's what oppas are for, eating the crap that you don't like.
