Martin Barre was recruited to replace Abrahams on guitar and the band enjoyed considerable success with their next album, 'Stand Up' reaching number one in the British album charts. Shortly after, their next album, 'Benefit' reached number three in England and number 11 in the US charts and they shared the bill with Jimi Hendrix and BB King at the Atlanta Rock Festival before a crowd of 200,000 people. The following year they recorded the album, 'Aqualung', with Anderson's writing now reflecting serious social issues. The album is one of the greatest albums of the 1970s. It reached number seven in the American charts and number four in Britain. In 1971 they made the 'concept' album 'Thick as a Brick', which reached number one on both sides of the Atlantic, despite being viciously attacked by critics who felt it was too pretentious. The fans loved it and Tull went on to record gold and platinum albums throughout the 70s. By the late 70s Anderson had moved out to live in the English countryside and the band's music became more folk-influenced. In 1979, their new album 'Stormwatch' became their first since 'This Was' not to make the US top 20 and it appeared the band had passed their creative and popular peak. Astoundingly they experienced a popular resurgence in 1989 when 'Crest of a Knave' won the Grammy for Best Rock/Metal Performance. With Anderson and Barre ever-present different Tull line-ups have continued to record albums, with several releases in the 90s and one or two since then. They also remain a hugely popular live attraction, with fans from their heyday mingling with those who weren't even born when 'This Was' was released. In total, Tull have recorded 11 gold and five platinum albums and were undoubtedly one of the premiere bands of the 1970s. Frontman Ian Anderson is, to my mind, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of his or any or any other generation and a true master of his instrument. My personal favourite Jethro Tull albums: Stand Up, Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses. Essential Tull tracks: Bouree, Living in the Past, Thick as a Brick, Life is a Long Song, Wond'ring Aloud, Dun Ringill (live version is best), One Brown Mouse, Witches Promise, Reasons for Waiting, Locomotive Breath, Sweet Dream. Tull remain one of my favourite bands and I highly recommend them to anyone who has not heard them before.

Edit: Oh, are you talking about the actual track Aqualung as opposed to the album? Well, when the selection is that good you have to make some pretty tough choices. ![]()

Best part was the at the beginning of the concert. The music starts playing and you see about half the crowd light up. ![]() EDIT: By the way, when in hell did you get 1.5k posts? Arbiter, thanks for the laugh and for the great info. As usual, you rock. Did Ian Anderson play a rockin' flute solo or do a little jig? Why yes, he did.
