Crisis in Japan - Page 75

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Well, I finally looked at it, since I wasn't exactly sure, but now it's 100% sure.

4 Sv = 4000 mSv = 4000000 uSv is equal to a DL50, meaning 50% chance of death.

I don't think the concern is so much whether or not you'll die immediately as it is how healthy the gradual buildup of radioactive material in your body is.

When I got my cat radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism, they wouldn't let me see him for a week, and then they wouldn't let me sleep with him for two more -- not because my cat's a nuclear bomb, but because it's going to add to my total exposure.

The top picture is the plant in the morning; the bottom picture is after the explosion was heard. All that's left of one of its walls is the framework.

Exactly. And the numbers I gave is the total exposure, everything cumulated.
Meaning you can have it over one week, or in a minute, the chance will be the same.

Instead of sending donations why not go out of your way to pick up some made in Japan items?

"It's hard to see if there's a building where this (what we believe to be) steam is. Can we go back there?"

"Ah, there is. So you see that building there. Now that building is gone."

"Looks like it. The smoke is going up."

"It's at the front."

"We have some new information: the press conference expected at 5PM will be delayed for more discussions. We believe it could be to discuss the explosion."

"Well either way, you can see that building exploding. The worst case scenario that I might make of this is a steam explosion, meaning that the containment vessel is gone."

A buildup of hydrogen due to the meltdown of rods reacting with oxygen was a possible cause of the explosion. The video itself was very recent after the explosion so I believe the newscasters are just talking about how it's an explosion without really knowing what it is going on.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698
BBC Livestream talks about it every couple minutes and is switching between broadcasting the plant and the tsunami.

Edit: Also, not sure if someone already mentioned this but (from the BBC)
#
1023: Japanese authorities are extending the evacuation zone around the two Fukushima nuclear plants from 10km to 20km, according to local media.

They need to tell us what that building was -- though I really can't think of anything that would cause a catastrophic explosion with white smoke coming out.

Can any physicists person comment?

I'm pretty sure the explosion was at some other part of the plant, not the reactor.

I seriously hope it doesn't snowball into another Chernobyl.

I don't think so, but I think the area will become uninhabitable for a long time probably? I don't know what the half life of cesium and iodine but that's probably the determining factor along with the actual amount -- and probably the weather.
