I just wanted to add on how happy this thread makes me. Being a beer snob in college is hard :/

If you ever come by Metro Vancouver during the winter months, get some Granville Island Winter Ale. It's SOOOOOO good. Also, It's not expensive.

My personal favorite is Sierra Nevada, brewed in Chico California, known for it's hoppy, rich flavor. In fact I'm enjoying the winter celebration edition ale as we speak.
What are some of the TL favorites?
Fuck it took me long to type that.
Although I don't drink at all, because I"m a good little boy under the drinking age, some of my friends have said how shitty the pale ale shit is. Or so they say. What do you have to say about that?

I love their porter so much, it's just so thick and dark and leaves a great after taste. The Anchor Steam and Ale are great as well. Lagunitas, based in Petaluma (north bay), Brown Shugga' is a great sipping beer. It's a 10% without the alcohol taste to it. http://www.lagunitas.com/beers/brownshugga.htmlAnd from the East Bay there's Buffalo Bill's. Their whole selection is just awesome, the other night I was drinking their pumpkin ale and it pretty much tastes like pumpkin pie. the lagunitas ipa might be the hoppiest beer ive tasted, borderline over the top, but damn tasty.

Its all relative to personal taste... though to generalize a whole selection of beer as "shit" is just stupid...

Second this one hartily. If you can find it on tap, it is pretty amazing.

I really like Blue Moon for some reason, I just tried it once at a bar and I was instantly in love.

I don't think good alcohol of any kind exists in Korea. *sigh* Does anyone know where to get any of these suggestions in Seoul?

I don't really have a favorite singular ale, it's all very mood based, but some of the brewers that I generally love are Stone, Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas and Dogfish Head. I also like some of Alaska's stuff, but only the stuff that is bomber only. Their beers that end up in six packs tend to be pretty subpar.
I'm also a homebrewer. I've been working on a whiskey stout for a year now, trying to nail down the perfect recipe. It's getting closer.

Anything that comes out a Belgium, the country of beers is amazing.
My personal favourites are the Duvel, anything made by the Trappist monks (Yes that is where my name came from) and DeKonnik.

I've only had it once, but I never forgot how great it was! One day I will have it again!

Seriously good stuff, better then almost any beer or ale i have tasted in my life.

I love the Belgians for two things: dEUS and their beer.

Nice, I just turned 21 so I can actually buy good beers instead of giving someone money to buy me Coors Light all the time.. ;p What beers do you guys suggest? I'm not a big fan of dark beers, but other than that I have no restrictions.

Chimay is incredible. Really really fantastic.
My favorite right now is Angler. Nothing special just a super drinkable ale. Very tasty and doesn't punch you in the throat with hops.

Hah, beer.
Look it up in the dictionairy. Beer is the collective word for all good imitations of Grolsch. There are good beers, but Grolsch just sits on top of the beermountain.
This is obviously just my fair and just, completely unbiased and trustworthy dutch opinion.

McEwan's Champion Ale Theakston's Old Peculier Barnsley Bitter (best thing about living in this shithole town) Golden Caralous (not technically an ale i think, but fuck it) Leffe Brun (see above^) Kwak (^ ^) Black Sheep/Black Sheep Riggwelter
Christmas is my favourite time of year for beers because we tend to get a lot of rich/dark porters - my favourite 'genre'. Also a big fan of ruby beers atm, but i'm terrible at remembering names (and most local brewers here only do seasonal brews, so it's hard to keep up anyway).
Gotta say, it's pretty cool to come across Americans who don't drink "Budweiser" and Miller.

I think in my previous post dedicated to Belgium, I should have praised the Westvleteren 12 more...
It might be a snob thing : You need to buy it directly from the abbay or shell out from 7 to 13€ each from "bootleggers" (if you're in brussel, i heard it can ebay up to 50$) as monks dont commercialize them properly (they don't want resell, hence the no sticker policy to purposely go against "belgian FDA" regulations). Even to buy them from the abbay you need to book an appointment on a day they sell them (depending on production availability) by phone (1 phone line, 1 monk for the whole belgium), give your licence plate so they check it, do it max once a month (they really keep booking). You can only buy 1 or 2 packs max (24 bottles per pack). Oh and they are starting to refuse payment in cash and only have a terminal for bancontact, a mostly belgian payment card system. On the other hand it's really cheap once you go there (50€ including recycling fee)
On the other hand, it's a very tasty dark ale with subtles notes of plums and nuts but with a very light texture. Perfect dark ale in my view. Was so hard to get some that I paid 13€ to get my first one. Didn't regret it.
(oh this is all about the 12 kind -yellow cap-, 8 and blond are awesome but not up to the absolute perfection of the 12)

Public Service Announcement: Don't get hooked on belgian beers, you end up spending 100 RMB in beijing for a Leffe or 7€ in france for a Duvel because you can't drink anything else...
