Just a discussion on your favorite ale, aspects that make it your favorite, and where it's from.

My personal favorite is Sierra Nevada, brewed in Chico California, known for it's hoppy, rich flavor. In fact I'm enjoying the winter celebration edition ale as we speak.

What are some of the TL favorites?

Fuck it took me long to type that.

Hoooraayy beer!

My favorite Ale right now is Turbodog from Abita (Louisiana). I've lived in the northern midwest my whole life, so I can only find it in Southern-themed spots up here, but wow is it tasty.

If you're into hearty, hoppy IPAs/APAs, you absolutely have to try the Two Hearted Ale from Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo Michigan. I've never been up to Michigan either but they're my favorite brewery hands down. Their limited and cask conditioned brews are top notch as well.

From my neck of the woods...

Other favorite IPA/APAs:
Alpha King from Three Floyds in Munster, Indiana
"3 Floyd’s flagship beer, Alpha King is a big American pale ale that pours a deep amber with a creamy head. This ale is brewed with Centennial, Cascade, and Warrior hops giving it an intense citrus aroma and a crisp hoppy finish."
Hopalicious from Ale Asylum in Madison, Wisconsin
"Eleven separate additions of cascade hops give this American pale ale its lush citrus aroma and bold hop flavor without crazy bitterness."
90 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head in Milton, Delaware
"Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA., "perhaps the best I.P.A. in America." An Imperial I.P.A. brewed to be savored from a snifter. A big beer with a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate."

Favorite Winter Seasonal Beers:
Winter Skål from Capitol Brewery in Middleton, Wisconsin
"An amber hued beer loaded with a great depth of specialty malt character and smooth hop flavors, guaranteed to make one welcome the onslaught of the cold."
Edmund Fitzgerald Porter from Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio
*okay, it's a year-round beer, but the bar I worked at only served it during the winter :D*
"A complex, roasty porter with a bittersweet, chocolate-coffee taste and bold hop presence."
Mercy Grand Cru from Ale Asylum in Madison, Wisconsin
"Our current seasonal is a perfect companion to the holiday season! Mercy, a Belgian-style Grand Cru, has a robust floral aroma with a hint of spice. This full-bodied ale is ruby in color with flavor of dark fruits and a smooth finish. The rich flavors work equally well for a holiday cocktail gathering or side by side with your favorite holiday meal."

Man, I feel extremely privileged to live where I do. I live in a small college town on the Northern California coast, and we have several breweries near us and access to some of the great breweries in Oregon and Washington.

Some of my favourites:

Deschutes Brewery: Black Butte Porter
Six Rivers Brewery: Moonstone Porter
Mad River Brewery: Steelhead Porter
Anderson Valley: Boont Amber Ale
Ninkasi : Tricerahops Double IPA.

And I recently had this gem recently, and I recommend you check it out if you have access to a Wholefoods. It's called Dark Force, an ImperialWheat Stout from HaandBryggeriet, a Norwegian brewery.

I love beer. Love, love, love beer. I even interviewed iNcontrol about his favourite beer for Gosutrolling.com. He remarked that he is typically a Gin man, but he does enjoy McMenamin's Ruby.

Descheutes is AMAZING. Almost anything they put out is great, but Black Butte is definitely my favorite.

Anderson Valley's Barney Flatt's Oatmeal Stout is also very good.

HUGE fan of Sierra Nevada. Live about two hours from chico.

If you're looking for a good pale ale like Sierra Nevada's green label check out Hangar 24, it's a micro brewery in Redlands, CA. Awesome pale ales! As well Maximus makes a very good pale ale.

Have you tried Sierra Nevadas Torpedo and Big Foot? Talk about a hoppy mess of delicious pleasure.

All the beers listed so far are great. Some of my favorites:

Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland - All of them, but especially the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter
Saison Dupont (from Belgium)
Surly Darkness, Furious, and Abrasive Ale
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Boulevard Brewing Company Unfiltered Wheat (their Saison is really good as well)
All of the Trappist beers (Rochefort, Orval, etc.)

Do you live in humboldt?
I'm in Mendocino myself, and I love the breweries around here.
Red tail ale out of ukiah is good too.
(home town)
I haven't tried many small scale ales out of northern/central california though.

Tooooo many, I'll just name a few.

Dogfishhead's 120-minute IPA
Avery Samael
Great Divide Yeti

There are tons more. I have a display of empty bottles. I can't remember most of the top of my head.

Edit: Almost any quad or imperial stout!

Give 3/4 beers, ranging in darkness.

Widmere hefeweizen (with a lemon ftw)
Widmere Deadlift (great IPA, 9%?)
Silver City scotch ale (scotch ale, smooth, silky, prolly wouldnt drink more than 2. 9%ish)
Annd hm... for a light choice,

Henery wienhards Blue boar or blondey.

All 4 beers are local micro brews in Western Washington.
The micro brews around here are amazing, dont drink domestic crap like bug light n shit unless its beer pong, in which case im chugging it anyway lol. No flavor in those.

There are also great seasonal beers here too, but thats another list. If anyone in the area is interested i can suggest some of the Winter brews tho!
Cheers!

I have to admit I'm a big fan of Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale (brewed in Halifax Nova-Scotia, Canada). Alternatively (and a bit more expensive, but worth it) I absolutely love a nice Stella Artois (brewed in Leuven, Belgium) from the tap, but then again that's a blonde lager.

Widmere is a pretty large brewery I thought, just had their drifter ale a couple days ago, it was nice.
IPA is nice, insane amounts of hops.

Sleeman makes a really nice India pale ale as well. Although, it's harder to get a hold of (fortunately, I'm from Guelph). They also make a realy awesome cream ale.

I agree, Sierra Nevada has the best Pale Ale's around. Their Torpedo IPA I think is trumped by none.

Their stouts are amazing as well, rich and full of flavor. If anyone is in to a more malty beer, I would definitely recommend it.

And bigfoot for a barleywine if you feel like having a meal and a beer all in one.

Wieckse Rose. I usually prefer hard liquor, but this one has a good taste albeit probably over-sweetened.

I'm still under 21 so I haven't gotten a huge variety, but Guinness beer from Ireland is damn delicious. When I was in Scotland I had that with practically every meal - the foam and the aftertaste are just so amazing.

Its possible they have expanded, The difter is awesome. The Deadlift IPA gets sold in 4packs because their alcohal content is high. Widmere is probably my favorite go to brewery. They are located in Portland OR, so im sure they are all over organ too. But alas, in the beer section, Widmere is always in the Micro brews.

Great stuff from them.

A friend of mine got to go on a tour of the brewery and tried every one of their beers on tap. I am pumped to try Widmere 2011. (for thoes who dont know they make a special beer every year, and it usually completely different from the last). the 09 was a Belgium style. But the 2010 was a Pitch Black IPA. Tasty but i could never drink more than 1 lol It was litterally pitch black. would be such a headache to actually drink a 6pack of those in one night.

Three ales I recently tried from Unibroue in Chambly, Quebec that are all delicious.

La Fin du Monde(the end of the world) - Golden Ale
Maudite(damned) - Amber-Red Ale
Trois Pistoles - Dark Ale

All three are 9% and with very unique flavours. Highly recommend you try them out if you live in Canada.

Being a San Diego resident I enjoy many of the world-class craft breweries in my fair county. Right now I'm a lot more into the Stouts than the IPAs, and I have to say Alesmith's Speedway Stout is pretty fucking delicious. Some other good ones:

Ballast Point Sextant
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Mikeller Beer Geek Breakfast
Great Divide Yeti

As far as IPAs go some of my favorites are:

Stone Ruination
Ballast Point Sculpin
Great Divide Hercules

Also if you ever have the opportunity to try a beer brewed with peppers, try it. I've had a Stone Smoked Porter brewed with chipotle peppers as well as a Ballast Point Sculpin IPA brewed with ghost chilis, and both were amazing.

I like a lot of breweries (living in California right now) but off the top of my head:

anything from Russian River, Dogfish, Stone, most of Oskar Blues, Kern River, Firestone walker, North Coast

also like a good Belgian gueuze, trippel, saison; Westvleteren when I can get it

also cask-conditioned British bitters (real ale)

basically I like beer

Their beers are much less hoppy and are sweet and tasty and citrusy. The bubbles are smaller so it is very, very smooth. Drink BlueMoon when its ice cold!

High five from Brussels.

Some details tho.
The choice within this range is quite poor.
Rochefort 10 as an overwhelming taste. It should be kept for venaison or "solo drinking" (the beer you'll have after it will have no taste, spent the evening with it
The La Trappe is waaaaaaaay better in its quad version (purple sticker)
The Westmalle is also way more interesting in the tripple version (yellow sticker)

All of those are awesome anyway but actually they need to be treated like wine (with matching lunch/diner) to really reveal their awesomeness. (I don't mean you can't get wasted purely on those...I go on my La Trappe binge from time to time, 6 is the magic number)

But if you visit belgium, don't limit yourself to those. Actually even the full range that includes the "light" Orval (6,2°) isn't really suitable for all occasions.

On a hot summer day nothing is better than a Saison Dupont bio or a gueuze from Cantillon. Cantillon also makes some traditional Krieks, very old school. Nothing to do with cherry syrup beers that you get in super markets.

Last thing, a reading advice. any book from Michael Jackson. Yeah, same name that the other one but to show the importance of this guy here, when i told a friend "Michael Jackson is dead" on june 25 2009, he answered unknowingly "yeah 2 years ago, you didn't know?"

Their beers are much less hoppy and are sweet and tasty and citrusy. The bubbles are smaller so it is very, very smooth. Drink BlueMoon when its ice cold!

Lol blue moon does taste fine. But my circle of friends call it the girls beer because it seems to be the only beer girls actually enjoy, unless they are drinkers. Its like what liquor is to mix drink, Beer is to blue moon.

It is tasty tho, dont have it often. Will drink blue moon over any bud/GMD/etc. any day tho.

What are some of the TL favorites?

I love everything I've had from Great Lakes Brewing Co. it's blown every other beer I've had out of the water actually (which are not that many), but I don't really actually know much about beers, so I don't know what else to try.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

Ha my friends wife used to work for them and I would regularly mow their lawn for cases of beer. Good times. Oregon is a great place for brewing on your own as well. Sooooo many beers to choose from at some bars O.o

Like a few people have said Black Butte Porter is pretty freakin amazing.

Alexander Keith's is pretty good stuff, it's a pretty basic beer good for parties or just general drinking, not too expensive. Pilsner is really good for just drinking in general, probably my favourite beer overall. Heineken is just classic, good beer.

As for "indy" beer, I like Big Rock out of Calgary pretty much any of them- although the India Pale Ale is particularly good. Haven't tried much else tbh, also Pilsner and Big Rock aren't sold in Eastern Canada which really sucks

Magic Hat's #9: Not Quite Pale Ale
[image loading]

It's significantly darker than most pale ales, so it's a lot more full-bodied. It's not overly bitter, in fact it's mysteriously somewhat fruity... Can't really describe it as anything but refreshing and delicious. I would definitely recommend it!

Great beer can be had across the USA, which may surprise those who don't live here and think all we have is Bud and Coors and Miller.

I'm in Oregon and it's definitely beer country with quite a lot of micro-breweries and great variety on tap.

Bridgeport IPA is just one of my favorites.

Pretty Things Mild Ale 10.5% (British Mild Ale, brewed in MA)

Besides fuller anything by Magic Hat, Ommengang, or Rogue is pretty damn good. I also like Smuttynose beers a lot.

My top 5 (not in any particular order)

Stella (Belgium), see Heineken
Guinness (Ireland), creamy, dark, goes well with a lot of food
Heineken (Netherlands), classic import, just delicious
Koeningshoven (Netherlands), rich, darkish, 10%? badass!
Rickard's Red (Canada), just a great premium beer that has been in many good memories

I'm from the SF bay area and I love our local beers.

You cannot go wrong with anything from Anchor. I love their porter so much, it's just so thick and dark and leaves a great after taste. The Anchor Steam and Ale are great as well.

Lagunitas, based in Petaluma (north bay), Brown Shugga' is a great sipping beer. It's a 10% without the alcohol taste to it.
http://www.lagunitas.com/beers/brownshugga.html

And from the East Bay there's Buffalo Bill's. Their whole selection is just awesome, the other night I was drinking their pumpkin ale and it pretty much tastes like pumpkin pie.

Anyone else doing their own beer? In Quebec, 24 beers cost 22-ish canadian dollars. For the same cost, you can brew yourself 40-50 beers. Plus you can even put some flavors in it like coffee...

Yep, I love brewing - especially if it's experimental flavors. Among the unusual beers I've brewed:

Belgian style Mango ale w/Indian Spices
Cinnamon Spiced Brown Ale
Hibiscus Ale
Cherry Vanilla Porter
Watermelon Ale
Maple Syrup Porter
Juniper Berry Ale
Gluten-free Ale made with sorghum
"Chef's Special" Ale (where I combined all the leftover ingredients - that one was interesting)

Bud light

Just kidding. I have a feeling I'd be warned if I was really serious. For the beers commonly bought at a grocery store, I like:

Newcastle
Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat - probably even more girlier tasting than Blue Moon
Blue Moon
Sam Adams Boston Lager
Killians - because it's surprisingly good for how cheap it is
Coors Light - if broke and trying to get drunk it tastes the best IMO out of all the $6/6pk beers

For cheap beer I personally like James Ready Their Ale(which I just recently discovered, was drinking original b4) is amazing for a cheaper brand. Other then that Sleemans makes a great variety of good beers,Keith red/white and IPA are all amazing. German beers like LowenBrau Holstein and DAAB are to die for if you feel like paying a bit more

Oh and Japanese beer Sapporo's is also amazing!

I don't really have a favorite singular ale, it's all very mood based, but some of the brewers that I generally love are Stone, Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas and Dogfish Head. I also like some of Alaska's stuff, but only the stuff that is bomber only. Their beers that end up in six packs tend to be pretty subpar.

I'm also a homebrewer. I've been working on a whiskey stout for a year now, trying to nail down the perfect recipe. It's getting closer.

Hah, beer.

Look it up in the dictionairy. Beer is the collective word for all good imitations of Grolsch.
There are good beers, but Grolsch just sits on top of the beermountain.

This is obviously just my fair and just, completely unbiased and trustworthy dutch opinion.

McEwan's Champion Ale
Theakston's Old Peculier
Barnsley Bitter (best thing about living in this shithole town)
Golden Caralous (not technically an ale i think, but fuck it)
Leffe Brun (see above^)
Kwak (^ ^)
Black Sheep/Black Sheep Riggwelter

Christmas is my favourite time of year for beers because we tend to get a lot of rich/dark porters - my favourite 'genre'. Also a big fan of ruby beers atm, but i'm terrible at remembering names (and most local brewers here only do seasonal brews, so it's hard to keep up anyway).

Gotta say, it's pretty cool to come across Americans who don't drink "Budweiser" and Miller.

I think in my previous post dedicated to Belgium, I should have praised the Westvleteren 12 more...

It might be a snob thing : You need to buy it directly from the abbay or shell out from 7 to 13€ each from "bootleggers" (if you're in brussel, i heard it can ebay up to 50$) as monks dont commercialize them properly (they don't want resell, hence the no sticker policy to purposely go against "belgian FDA" regulations). Even to buy them from the abbay you need to book an appointment on a day they sell them (depending on production availability) by phone (1 phone line, 1 monk for the whole belgium), give your licence plate so they check it, do it max once a month (they really keep booking). You can only buy 1 or 2 packs max (24 bottles per pack). Oh and they are starting to refuse payment in cash and only have a terminal for bancontact, a mostly belgian payment card system. On the other hand it's really cheap once you go there (50€ including recycling fee)

On the other hand, it's a very tasty dark ale with subtles notes of plums and nuts but with a very light texture. Perfect dark ale in my view. Was so hard to get some that I paid 13€ to get my first one. Didn't regret it.

(oh this is all about the 12 kind -yellow cap-, 8 and blond are awesome but not up to the absolute perfection of the 12)

Newcastle: Very good ale, I still remember my first taste, as it's the first non-shitty beer i've tried, before than it was all Coors, Molsen, Budweiser, and Labatts. It's still my go-to "I have money, let's get a good beer". This beer with a cigarette and a good folk song playing is almost indescribable, the best chill out beer on cold days. Best served room temperature like the English intended it, but putting it in the fridge for a couple hours doesn't harm its taste very much.

Innis & Gunn: Sweet mixed ale, tastes like vanilla, but not shitty-vanilla like vanilla coke, actual, from-the-ground vanilla. Worth the high price tag, is the classic "I'm going to try something expensive" ale. Very good ale with a heavy dinner, like Thanksgiving or Chirstmas, especially since those are the times of year you're going to be treating yourself anyway.

Definately using this thread to try new ales.

Badger Original Ale - an adaptation of Badger Best Bitter, the ale that was served in the 1700s and to troops during the napoleonic war. Most of the Badger ales are excellent.

man really americans have to call their beer Ale because it's so bad that you cant call it a proper beer

Real beer comes from Czech republic and the former german areas in Poland

Without any intend to troll, I'd like to ask for advice for good beer from these regions...I mean I've been there several times, took advice from locals but I always end up with a slightly tastier stella, nothing that can match a Saison or Hommelbier or a blond abbey beer like Tripple Karmeliet or Maredsous, that are quite basic premium belgian.

ah, a thread that i can get behind, massive ale bore here

chimay is the absolute nuts, love that stuff and was delighted to find a somewhat-local pub that sells it, and at a reasonable price now (not at the LOL £4.35/bottle that my old local does). blue > red, not tried the white yet

i don't get the love for newcastle, it's just not that special and it's only ever in bottles here. even in newcastle it's rare to find on tap apparently, the only place i've ever seen it on tap was when i was in nyc

most of my favourites however are fairly local stuff that you won't find exported in the states. i know that wells' banana bread does go over. everard's tiger might, fuller's already been mentioned, the esb is good, london pride is ok.

next time i put in an order with beersofeurope (a misnomer, yes) i'm meaning to get some dogfishhead, but it's pretty expensive imo

White is a pretty decent strong "pilsner" (with high fermentation tho if i'm not mistaken). Worth the try but maybe not at £4+ (this price is madness, take eurostar to come on a shopping spree it'll be cheaper! That above the price of a 4 pack here -5ish€ here-). imho white ranks under the ones I quoted before.

Oh and if any TLer comes over in Brussels, PM me! I have the adresses and will be happy to take you on a beer tour of brussels/belgium!

PS: like the SFW pics thread, no post without pic!

I don't think these have been answered yet, but basically the short of it is that there are two categories of beer: ale and lager. The difference is the type of yeast used. Ale has "top fermenting" yeast and lager have "bottom fermenting" yeast. The end result is that you get two completely different beers.

In my opinion, most great beers are ales. I've only ran into a few lagers that I actually liked.

Most of the mass produced beers in the U.S. (e.g., Budweiser, Coors, Millers, etc...) are actually lagers. Also the regions where you say "real beer" comes from are usually known for their pilsners, which, if you didn't know, are also types of lagers.

The bar sucks (tourist trap, ok 2K beers but lots of crappy exotic ones and low on many belgian essentials, go to Moeder Lambic instead) but the beer created by the owner is pretty nice.

Sierra Nevada is amazing, I routinely go back to it again and again.
Gordon Biersch makes some good beers. Their winter bock is quite delicious. They're based in San Jose, CA , you can find most of their beers in the area, but I've only seen the Marzen down in LA.

Greetings from Perth, Australia! The beer I enjoy most is Little Creature's Pale Ale. It tastes ok from the bottle, but so much better on tap. It's a beer that originated from a micro-brewery here.

Do you live in humboldt?
I'm in Mendocino myself, and I love the breweries around here.
Red tail ale out of ukiah is good too.
(home town)
I haven't tried many small scale ales out of northern/central california though.

I actually do live in Humboldt. It's funny; you can typically tell where someone lives by the beer they're drinking ^.^

Kilkenny is really the only ale that I really like... I wish that I could find some more beers that I really enjoyed... but mostly I'll drink Kilkenny and on the lager side its Steam Whistle for me.
