My personal favorite is Sierra Nevada, brewed in Chico California, known for it's hoppy, rich flavor. In fact I'm enjoying the winter celebration edition ale as we speak.
What are some of the TL favorites?
Fuck it took me long to type that.

My favorite Ale right now is Turbodog from Abita (Louisiana). I've lived in the northern midwest my whole life, so I can only find it in Southern-themed spots up here, but wow is it tasty. If you're into hearty, hoppy IPAs/APAs, you absolutely have to try the Two Hearted Ale from Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo Michigan. I've never been up to Michigan either but they're my favorite brewery hands down. Their limited and cask conditioned brews are top notch as well. From my neck of the woods... Other favorite IPA/APAs: Alpha King from Three Floyds in Munster, Indiana "3 Floyd’s flagship beer, Alpha King is a big American pale ale that pours a deep amber with a creamy head. This ale is brewed with Centennial, Cascade, and Warrior hops giving it an intense citrus aroma and a crisp hoppy finish." Hopalicious from Ale Asylum in Madison, Wisconsin "Eleven separate additions of cascade hops give this American pale ale its lush citrus aroma and bold hop flavor without crazy bitterness." 90 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head in Milton, Delaware "Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA., "perhaps the best I.P.A. in America." An Imperial I.P.A. brewed to be savored from a snifter. A big beer with a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate." Favorite Winter Seasonal Beers: Winter Skål from Capitol Brewery in Middleton, Wisconsin "An amber hued beer loaded with a great depth of specialty malt character and smooth hop flavors, guaranteed to make one welcome the onslaught of the cold." Edmund Fitzgerald Porter from Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio *okay, it's a year-round beer, but the bar I worked at only served it during the winter :D* "A complex, roasty porter with a bittersweet, chocolate-coffee taste and bold hop presence." Mercy Grand Cru from Ale Asylum in Madison, Wisconsin "Our current seasonal is a perfect companion to the holiday season! Mercy, a Belgian-style Grand Cru, has a robust floral aroma with a hint of spice. This full-bodied ale is ruby in color with flavor of dark fruits and a smooth finish. The rich flavors work equally well for a holiday cocktail gathering or side by side with your favorite holiday meal."

Some of my favourites: Deschutes Brewery: Black Butte Porter Six Rivers Brewery: Moonstone Porter Mad River Brewery: Steelhead Porter Anderson Valley: Boont Amber Ale Ninkasi : Tricerahops Double IPA. And I recently had this gem recently, and I recommend you check it out if you have access to a Wholefoods. It's called Dark Force, an ImperialWheat Stout from HaandBryggeriet, a Norwegian brewery. I love beer. Love, love, love beer. I even interviewed iNcontrol about his favourite beer for Gosutrolling.com. He remarked that he is typically a Gin man, but he does enjoy McMenamin's Ruby.

If you're looking for a good pale ale like Sierra Nevada's green label check out Hangar 24, it's a micro brewery in Redlands, CA. Awesome pale ales! As well Maximus makes a very good pale ale. Have you tried Sierra Nevadas Torpedo and Big Foot? Talk about a hoppy mess of delicious pleasure.

Widmere hefeweizen (with a lemon ftw) Widmere Deadlift (great IPA, 9%?) Silver City scotch ale (scotch ale, smooth, silky, prolly wouldnt drink more than 2. 9%ish) Annd hm... for a light choice, Henery wienhards Blue boar or blondey. All 4 beers are local micro brews in Western Washington. The micro brews around here are amazing, dont drink domestic crap like bug light n shit unless its beer pong, in which case im chugging it anyway lol. No flavor in those. There are also great seasonal beers here too, but thats another list. If anyone in the area is interested i can suggest some of the Winter brews tho! Cheers!

Rochefort 10 as an overwhelming taste. It should be kept for venaison or "solo drinking" (the beer you'll have after it will have no taste, spent the evening with it ![]() The La Trappe is waaaaaaaay better in its quad version (purple sticker) The Westmalle is also way more interesting in the tripple version (yellow sticker) All of those are awesome anyway but actually they need to be treated like wine (with matching lunch/diner) to really reveal their awesomeness. (I don't mean you can't get wasted purely on those...I go on my La Trappe binge from time to time, 6 is the magic number) But if you visit belgium, don't limit yourself to those. Actually even the full range that includes the "light" Orval (6,2°) isn't really suitable for all occasions. On a hot summer day nothing is better than a Saison Dupont bio or a gueuze from Cantillon. Cantillon also makes some traditional Krieks, very old school. Nothing to do with cherry syrup beers that you get in super markets. Last thing, a reading advice. any book from Michael Jackson. Yeah, same name that the other one but to show the importance of this guy here, when i told a friend "Michael Jackson is dead" on june 25 2009, he answered unknowingly "yeah 2 years ago, you didn't know?"

Look it up in the dictionairy. Beer is the collective word for all good imitations of Grolsch. There are good beers, but Grolsch just sits on top of the beermountain. This is obviously just my fair and just, completely unbiased and trustworthy dutch opinion.

Theakston's Old Peculier Barnsley Bitter (best thing about living in this shithole town) Golden Caralous (not technically an ale i think, but fuck it) Leffe Brun (see above^) Kwak (^ ^) Black Sheep/Black Sheep Riggwelter Christmas is my favourite time of year for beers because we tend to get a lot of rich/dark porters - my favourite 'genre'. Also a big fan of ruby beers atm, but i'm terrible at remembering names (and most local brewers here only do seasonal brews, so it's hard to keep up anyway). Gotta say, it's pretty cool to come across Americans who don't drink "Budweiser" and Miller.

It might be a snob thing : You need to buy it directly from the abbay or shell out from 7 to 13€ each from "bootleggers" (if you're in brussel, i heard it can ebay up to 50$) as monks dont commercialize them properly (they don't want resell, hence the no sticker policy to purposely go against "belgian FDA" regulations). Even to buy them from the abbay you need to book an appointment on a day they sell them (depending on production availability) by phone (1 phone line, 1 monk for the whole belgium), give your licence plate so they check it, do it max once a month (they really keep booking). You can only buy 1 or 2 packs max (24 bottles per pack). Oh and they are starting to refuse payment in cash and only have a terminal for bancontact, a mostly belgian payment card system. On the other hand it's really cheap once you go there (50€ including recycling fee) On the other hand, it's a very tasty dark ale with subtles notes of plums and nuts but with a very light texture. Perfect dark ale in my view. Was so hard to get some that I paid 13€ to get my first one. Didn't regret it. (oh this is all about the 12 kind -yellow cap-, 8 and blond are awesome but not up to the absolute perfection of the 12) official website WIKI ![]() Public Service Announcement: Don't get hooked on belgian beers, you end up spending 100 RMB in beijing for a Leffe or 7€ in france for a Duvel because you can't drink anything else...

Innis & Gunn: Sweet mixed ale, tastes like vanilla, but not shitty-vanilla like vanilla coke, actual, from-the-ground vanilla. Worth the high price tag, is the classic "I'm going to try something expensive" ale. Very good ale with a heavy dinner, like Thanksgiving or Chirstmas, especially since those are the times of year you're going to be treating yourself anyway. Definately using this thread to try new ales.

chimay is the absolute nuts, love that stuff and was delighted to find a somewhat-local pub that sells it, and at a reasonable price now (not at the LOL £4.35/bottle that my old local does). blue > red, not tried the white yet i don't get the love for newcastle, it's just not that special and it's only ever in bottles here. even in newcastle it's rare to find on tap apparently, the only place i've ever seen it on tap was when i was in nyc most of my favourites however are fairly local stuff that you won't find exported in the states. i know that wells' banana bread does go over. everard's tiger might, fuller's already been mentioned, the esb is good, london pride is ok. next time i put in an order with beersofeurope (a misnomer, yes) i'm meaning to get some dogfishhead, but it's pretty expensive imo

Worth the try but maybe not at £4+ (this price is madness, take eurostar to come on a shopping spree it'll be cheaper! That above the price of a 4 pack here -5ish€ here-). imho white ranks under the ones I quoted before. Oh and if any TLer comes over in Brussels, PM me! I have the adresses and will be happy to take you on a beer tour of brussels/belgium! PS: like the SFW pics thread, no post without pic! ![]()

I don't think these have been answered yet, but basically the short of it is that there are two categories of beer: ale and lager. The difference is the type of yeast used. Ale has "top fermenting" yeast and lager have "bottom fermenting" yeast. The end result is that you get two completely different beers. In my opinion, most great beers are ales. I've only ran into a few lagers that I actually liked. Also the regions where you say "real beer" comes from are usually known for their pilsners, which, if you didn't know, are also types of lagers.

Gordon Biersch makes some good beers. Their winter bock is quite delicious. They're based in San Jose, CA , you can find most of their beers in the area, but I've only seen the Marzen down in LA.

Do you live in humboldt? I'm in Mendocino myself, and I love the breweries around here. Red tail ale out of ukiah is good too. (home town) I haven't tried many small scale ales out of northern/central california though. I actually do live in Humboldt. It's funny; you can typically tell where someone lives by the beer they're drinking ^.^
