I've told that NK is so poor that it simply has to rely on methods such as these in which it threatens force and demands that others give it money/supplies in return for not initiating war/violence. Is this true? It seems to me that such behavior can only be self-destructive, as it brings international reprisals and a generally negative image.

I have been interested in North Korea for some time and i gotta say that the regime there is totally ridiculous, closing their own people into concentration camps like nacist had and executing them is common thing. Totally isolated from the rest of the world, people has absolutely no idea about other countries and the actual situation in the world. Best are their war museums, where you can see reconstructed american planes that were shot down and they are so proud when showing them.

NK is totally fucked, they almost have nothing to eat and they have nothing to lose. Basically it all comes up to their leader Kim Chong Il, his descendant and commanders go crazy and decide to make huge mess in desperate try to gain. He and his commanders could be escaping and leading war from "safe place" (i guess hidden somewhere in China). People would not be told this of course and war propaganda would be very strong over there. Kim Chong Il already has a lot of hidden money and secret tunels and ways ready for his escape. I hope it will not come to this, but considering all the non-sense that goes on in NK, everything could happen - unfortunately.

Wow, these new reports about continued escalation by NK are troubling. I hope it's not true. North Korea is so stupid if they take this one step farther. If this escalates further, they seriously risk losing any support China is giving them. Without support from China, North Korea can't continue to function internationally. I just hope North Korea isn't stupid.

My hope is that no further conflict will come from this incident, and that in a few days, SK will express their just anger at the North, but will likely leave it at that. After that, I hope China will finally get fed up with cleaning up NK's messes and will finally give them an ultimatum to stop this dangerous aggression. I think that's the best case scenario; no further conflict, but serious consequences for NK from the international community, especially China.
Weird, last time I checked the UN said you need to have at least 200 APM and be rainbow league to be called human. —Liquid`TLO

If North Korea is preparing to go all-out, then this is starting to get really confusing for me. They should know as well as anyone else that they have no chance in a full-scale war against SK, which is why they'd stick to doing shit like sinking the ship earlier this year. It's a self-destructive action and it seems that the NK leadership must be either in chaos right now, or extremely desperate.

Nah dude I dont thing NK knows as well as anyone, why dont you send them a letter or something, for all we know your supreme knowledge can save someone.

I'm simply noting that this is a significant change away from the way they typically stage provocations against South Korea, and that's a disturbing development. No need to be a smartass. If you simply misinterpreted my remarks, then I apologize for not making it clearer.

This is very bad news, has anyone any idea of what NK's motives are? They can't just attack out of the sudden.

I hope this does ends asap, this is very bad for the korean people.

Totally true. They don't even have enough oil to get their stupid aiplanes' engines work. Just like Boxer spends all his mineral producing marines, NK spends all its money producing nukes.

Im prolly gonna get flamed for this. But if I was North Korea watching an island on the border and saw KR/US soldiers rehearsing an invasion then I would be a bit paranoid as well. That's assuming that this incident wasnt a calculated attack with political motives and it was a response to a perceived invasion.

They knew in advance that it was a drill so there's no way they could have mistaken this for a planned invasion. Also these drills are held every year.

NK seems to be flexing its muscles and usually the reason is the ruling party wants to get public support behind it. We tend to think that the NK leaders only do what they do to send a message to the outside world but actually often the action is also calculated to send a message to its own population.

People are starving there again because the conservative SK government halted aid shipments after the sinking of the warship earlier this year. With acts of aggression the NK leaders probably hope to accomplish two things- one, as I mentioned before, is to divert the population's attention from their own starvation and worsening economic conditions and the second is to try and pressure the SK government into starting up aid shipments again. However I don't think it's going to work this time. The Lee Myeong Bak administration seems pretty determined not to cave into any sort of pressure from the north and not restart economic aid at least until the north apologizes for the Cheonan sinking and cooperates fully with nuclear inspectors from the UN.

SK had ten years of liberal rule during which the 'sunshine' policy was used. This involved continuous aid shipments to and attempts to increase economic cooperation with the North no matter what provocative things they did in order to try and work towards eventual reunification. It seemed to work to some extent with less acts of aggression by the north and the relative success of north-south economic ventures within the north like the gaesong industrial complex and geumgangsan tourism. However it was also a failure as the whole time the north cooperated in some areas they were also secretly continuing to develop their nuclear program and there was no democratization and increased rights for it's citizens. In the end it seemed like all the aid shipments and economic help were just making the NK elites richer and doing nothing to change the attitudes of the leaders.

The current conservative government is different and seems determined to call NK's bluff. No matter what aggressive acts the north pulls this time I don't think the current administration is going to compromise. In the end NK knows it can't win a war against SK and the US and China won't intervene if they are the aggressors so all they have is posturing.

The US will most definitely intervene, but intervene on the side of SK. The US has an incredibly high amount of troops in SK for the purpose of defending SK and providing counterattack measures on the North to disrupt communications and nuclear capabilities. US supports SK stronger than almost any other nation in the world, save Israel (and maybe Japan).

There are only about 50,000 US troops stationed in SK. It's actually a common misunderstanding. The Korean border is largerly maintained by SK. They have about 700000 active soldiers. SK has the 3rd largest army in the world when you count the reserves.

I think it's slightly less than 50,000 yet that is a VERY high amount of troops for US when we are talking PROTECTION and not being actually aggressive. I never meant to imply that SK was reliant completely on the US, but they would expect heavy, heavy US backing if any actual war were to occur.

I second that... I'm listening to an MBC stream as we speak The whole country would freak out if this happened. IE some people will start booking flights out of SK to avoid war.

It might be ridiculously one-sided as in ... North Korea would have no chance of surviving any kind of war. However, they would not leave much of South Korea if any behind them, even without using nuclear bombs, there is surely enough artillery/bombs/missiles/etc to take out most of South Korea with them, when you mix in their nuclear capacity(even at a small level nuclear power is devastating, see WW2 for examples). I don't think this is a simple problem, where you can just be like, cut it out or I'm gonna declare war on you.

Certainly, if the N. Koreans were capable of a Nazi-style blitzkreig. However, I doubt N. Korean forces have the mobility of the early Nazi forces. And then when you take into account the superpowers that lie in direct proximity to the region (China, Japan, Russia), you come to realize that within days, if not hours, the N. Koreans would find themselves in the very uncomfortable position of fighting a multi-front defense with every other major superpower following quickly behind.

Its funny that in 34 pages pretty much noone talked about cause of attack and noone really gives a shit.
Everyone is just happy for getting a chance to poke NK with a stick and say "Bad NK!".

The numbers of US army in SK is just meaningless. They are more like a symbol that the US will help SK if they are attacked.
