Everyone is just happy for getting a chance to poke NK with a stick and say "Bad NK!". Personally, I'd prefer the shelling to stop for good before arguing whether NK might have had an unlikely reasonable explanation for what they did. As of now, everyone's still in shock.

Actually, I recall someone stating in this very thread that nk attacked because sk was holding naval exercises and refused to stop doing so after nk demanded they discontinue this, which is an entirely absurd demand.

Everyone is just happy for getting a chance to poke NK with a stick and say "Bad NK!". I've been giving this a great deal of thought actually, there seems to be no real logical reason for attacking. NK cannot win a war, and they must know this, they may be part of tyrranical reigime but they are not stupid. Then again given recent events I am inclined to think otherwise (sinking a freaking BOAT???) My money is on some kind of interal dispute, perhaps the leadership is splintering or something along these lines. But hey I'm just a poster on an internet forum and don't expect my opinion to be given any weight at all. Regardless of the cause this is still a very very bad situation.

0910:The BBC's diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says the shelling is both a wider demonstration to the outside world of North Korea's power and - many analysts believe - an indication of some kind of political transition at the very top of the North Korean power structure. There are strong indications that North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il has designated his son Kim Jong-un as his likely successor. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/9218848.stm

And then when you take into account the superpowers that lie in direct proximity to the region (China, Japan, Russia), you come to realize that within days, if not hours, the N. Koreans would find themselves in the very uncomfortable position of fighting a multi-front defense with every other major superpower following quickly behind. N. Korea's technology is stuck in the stone ages. They still use old Soviet fighter planes. The only thing they have is one of the largest armies in the world and a large special ops force. S. Korea's technology is basically 30 years ahead of them in every aspect. Plus korea gets majority of its military technology from the us.

This is my understanding of the cause of the attack, so don't quote me

They are more like a symbol that the US will help SK if they are attacked. 50,000 US troops means a lot more than troops from anywhere else. The technology and training of a US soldier is superior to most other countries. The UK is probably their only real competitor.

You obviously just arent reading and want to "poke" at the topic with useless banter. It was stated that it was a drill and North korea sent the warning to stop but they continued and then they fired with artillery. Many of us are worried
