Bass quantity always depends on positioning on the head, particularly for closed headphones.
At least two sources have FR measurements for the AKG K550, and both indicate a pretty normal amount of bass. If anything, it's slightly bass tilted according to these, at least on their test dummies: http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AKGK550.pdf http://www.headphone.com/headphones/akg-k-550.php
As for comfort, I've got no clue.

I just found an extremely good pair of earphones, for $10. Philips SHE3580. Was re-searching hidden gems on head-fi, many many people keep on talking about how the SHE3580's can give earphones that cost x10 a run for their money. Anyone looking for good sound quality at an insane price should go check them out.

If you want to get a cheap earbuds, trust me and get the SHE3580s. Go test it next to something like a Klipsch Image s4 and you'd be amazed. Do not get anything Skullycandy. It looks cute but the general consensus is that Skullcandy is a fashion brand and they make bad earphones.

The pads are really really soft. Someone who demo'ed them after me commented on how the pads were too plush and I think he picked up the Q701 instead. I can't pick between the 2 of them (k550 and d2000) because I've only spent a couple minutes with each of them at different stores.

They are overpriced. You are buying marketing and the name, but not high quality headphones. You could spend half the money and get better sounding headphones. Check out Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Beyerdynamic etc etc etc before you pull the trigger on those overpriced things.
These (Sennheiser HD 25-1 II) are much better quality headphones made by a reputable audiophile company. They may not be flashy like the Beats and you may not get as many people swooning over the white and red plastic the Beats have, but for people who know sound quality the HD 25-1 II > Beats.
If you are truly set on buying the Beats then go right ahead and I hope you enjoy them. Just know that you could save a good bit of coin and get better sounding stuff just by looking around at the options available to you.

I'm not quite sure but a year or two ago those were pretty fashionable, weren't they?

Well no one I know looks at Ed Hardy in a good way. But that's completely irrelevant.
Serious talk here: there's nothing wrong with brands where you pay for design. A few brands, like Bowers & Wilkins, have you pay quite a lot for the aesthetic design but they're still very capable of hitting with the big boys in terms of sound and build quality.
The problem with the Beats, especially the Beats Solo, is that they're typically not very good sounding headphones even if you ignore the price.

They are so terrible. I hope the previous responses have saved you from pulling the trigger on these nasties.

Anyone know anything about Sennheiser 598's? I've been wanting to buy them for a while for my more female vocalist heavy music.

If one side dies, is there any good way to fix?
|
On April 15 2012 01:01 iSometric wrote: If one side dies, is there any good way to fix? If it's because a wire frayed, you can recable it. If it's because the driver in the earcup itself died, then you need a replacement driver, which is significantly more complicated to fix and of course much harder to find a replacement for unless you're looking at some relatively expensive and popular headphone model. Or sometimes you could just get it sent in to the manufacturer for replacement under warranty or to pay for them to repair. Sometimes the price is appealing compared to just getting new headphones.

As I´ve just listened to some of the recommended headphones I´ll give a quick update on how things are going.
Sennheiser HD 598: I really enjoyed them. They seem to have a pretty balanced sound overall, the music had a lot of room. I´m not sure, but they seemed to lack just a little bit of bass. But overall I enjoyed them the most.
AKG k550: These I liked the least. They sounded really bright and a bit too aggressive for my ears. The overall sound wasn´t full/ colourful enough in my experience.
Beyerdynamic DT 880: I don´t really know about these ones. They were good, but I don´t really have an opinion on them, they sounded pretty "neutral" to me. That doesn´t have to be a bad thing, I did quite enjoy them. Also, they had a nice, warm feeling bass.
So, overall I liked the Sennheiser ones the best, with the Beyerdynamics as a close second. But I feel that I´m far away from deciding on one pair. I do know what sound I´m going for now though. It should be a full, warm, colourful sound that feels like it´s surrounding you (i don´t really know how to say that in english, maybe "roomy" ). There should be a good, strong, definded bass also. Overall it should sound big, and open. I would be really happy if someone could help me here. Are there headphones with this kind of characteristics?

Well, I think the Sennheiser HD 650 fits your description very well, although it is quite pricey right now (there used to be some good deals on it around $300). Compared to the HD 598, there is much more bass, it is one of the few open headphones with great, authoritative bass response.
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 is worth a shot too as a less expensive alternative (it's only $172 on amazon right now!), as I think it has more bass than the DT 880 and is more open sounding, but some say that the treble on them can be overbearing. The DT 990 is designed to have a more "fun" sound than the neutral, analytical 880, and I think would generally be preferred for genres such as rock.

They are a really nice pair of headphones. They are perfect for female vocals since they have a forward sounding midrange that is very smooth and pleasant.
