the sound quality for both the phone and the earbuds is subpar. but if that satisfies you, thats all you need!

The ones that came with the galaxy s (i9000) were absolute garbage =P
I had the choice between Sony MDR-NC500D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones vs Bose OE2 for free. They arrive in like 2 weeks.
I chose the Bose. I don't know alot about headphones, did I make a good choice? From what I've been reading the Sony's have to have the Noise Cancel on to work and that they kill batteries. I'm more preoccupied with sound quality really and don't need Noise cancel.
So I bought myself the UltimateEars TripleFi 10s and love the sound in them. I am curious if there's a place that will take those and make put on custom ear molds onto the earbuds for me to have the best fit. Ya know going to an audiologist and getting a mold then sending them the mold + earbuds and they take off the earbud part and put on a custom mold then send them back to me? I thought i remember Tyler talking about something like that when he was on SotG and said he shipped them his earbuds and his molds and they sent them back to him. Now he has the ones he's always wearing when on cam. Maybe i heard him wrong?

The earbuds were terrible. But the audio quality out of the Galaxy S with voodoo sound is really good.
So, my plans of getting a good sound setup is starting to take form. Seems like I'm going for the HD650's. Now I need to select an amp and from reading around, seems like the FiiO E9 is a good idea to stay within budget. However, I was wondering if the FiiO E7 was good to have as well. Apparently the E9 has a dock for the E7 - does anybody know if the difference between just E9 and E9+E7 is a big deal?
Galaxy S2 famously has around 50 ohms output impedance. Any source output impedance will form a voltage divider with the load (headphones), resulting in V_L = V_s * Z_L / (Z_s + Z_L). Voltage across the load is the voltage of the source multiplied by the ratio of the load impedance by the combined source plus load impedances. Some headphones have impedance that varies a lot over frequency. So the extremely simple result is that the voltage lost over the source impedance will then vary over frequency...meaning that you get a potentially huge unintentional EQ effect. For some multi-balanced armature IEMs that can range from say 10 ohms to 90 ohms at different frequencies, you can get more than 10 dB changes...
For most headphones it's not really much of an issue.
But most high-end IEMs are multi balanced armature types with those complex crossover networks, and thus have very significant impedance changes over frequency (if not like 10 to 90 ohms, still a big deal). A lot of fullsize headphones including most popular Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic models, have a resonant hump around 70-120 Hz that has a significantly higher impedance than the rest of the range, like maybe 1.5x to 4x.
edit: E7 may or may not be a better DAC than the one in the Auzentech Bravura, which you really should mention you have. E9 may or may not be better than the internal amp. It has a higher output, but that's not useful for HD 650s.
In general the difference between E7 + E9 and just E9 (+ what?) could potentially be big, but only if whatever it is you're connecting to the E9 sucks. The dock just bypasses the E7's internal amp, but that's not a big deal. Just think of the E7 + E9 as a decent DAC + a decent amp, nothing particularly magic. One quirk is that the E7 locks your system (OS) volume to 100% so you can't do system volume control; only volume control through say a media player or the amp itself.
For that cost, if you don't mind having something internal, Asus Xonar Essence ST / STX is known to have better performance than E7 + E9 anyway (both the DAC and amp parts).

Aaah I'm getting mixed signals everywhere. What would you do around that pricepoint? =(
E7: good DAC, meh Amp --> ~$90 E9: no DAC (I'm not sure on this, it has USB in? Is that just for power?) great Amp (better than E10) --> ~$110 E10: good DAC (same as E7), good amp (better than E7) --> ~$90 E7 + E9: good DAC, great Amp (and I guess you get a portable amp for your DAP too) --> ~$200
Of course the "goods" and "greats" are relative to this comparison.
Edit: At ~$200 price point, if you don't care for portability, I wouldn't get a Fiio (or wait for their E17 coming out next month). As for what to get, ask Headfi.
E9 has no DAC (don't think the USB is for power either, as it gets external power elsewhere) and definitely the E10 DAC is different than the E7 because the E10 supports 24-bit, 96 kHz whereas the E7 just has 16-bit / 48 kHz (not that that's really a big deal in of itself).
On second thought I think the USB on the E9 is for passthrough to a docked E7.
I would just use the Auzentech Bravura. If you want to spend money, get a Xonar Essence STX.

Ok, I might go with that... While the Bravura seems to be good, mine seems to have a problem. On both my PCs, it sometimes makes a "click" when sounds stop abruptly (sometimes I don't hear it, sometimes it's fairly quiet, sometimes it's pretty loud). I wouldn't mind changing it. (Anyone know what could be causing this click? I might RMA it...)
I like the idea of a physical amp, but I hear good things about the xonar essence STX, so that might be good...
Here's what it sounds like:
I basically put my headphones around my microphone and spammed error sounds. The clicks don't happen often during normal use, but enough to be an annoyance and a concern. (This happens with the bravura with 2 different computers and 2 different headsets)

Well, I should've looked up the Bravura earlier, it has a dedicated headphone out, use that. I agree with this guy.
Weird clicks are maybe because of the OS / drivers. Pretty much every sound card has poor drivers or at least some annoyed users. edit: or maybe some transient from part of the signal chain deciding to shut itself off or something like that? that doesn't make any sense though
But most consumer USB sound cards and DACs can use the generic Windows USB audio device drivers, which are much more stable, so there's another advantage there to be had.
edit: I meant to say Windows USB audio device drivers (there's no such thing for PCI / PCIe sound cards)
Well the clicks occurred on 2 different pcs, both before and after installing the latest drivers from the auzentech website. (so in plug n play and with the huge 200mb driver+software pack)
Yeah I mean, Creative / Auzentech / Asus / whatever all have buggy drivers that some people complain about. Updating drivers doesn't help if the newer drivers are still no good, right? Or it could be buggy hardware.
So maybe there's some USB interface in your future.
my alessandro ms-1's developed a rattle (or grattle, as they say) a while back and theyre quite old so def out of warranty... i honestly dont want to spend the $ to send them to get fixed at this point.
i tried blowing from both sides after removing and cleaning the pads as thats pretty much what the fix was according to hifi and other sources to remove possible hairs that got stuck inside, but i haven't had any luck with getting that rattle out. some recommended opening the cans and cleaning them out that way, but then i'd have to heat it up and reseal using a hot glue gun (which i don't have). any other ideas for me guys? really like this headphones but the rattle is really annoying at low frequencies
