Yeah and also it doesn't make sense. In the first case it's the government sharing information and if the people are sovereign then you could make the argument that they have the rights to this information. In the second case the government is forcing a privately-owned company to release the names of those who purchases a certain book.

The fallacy you are referring to is "Non Causa Pro Causa," or "Non Cause for Cause," which is an informal fallacy. Informal fallacies are not inherently fallacious, that is, they are a type of fallacy in which the content of the argument is relevant to their fallaciousness. To be fallacious, a causal argument must violate the canons of good reasoning about causation in some common or deceptive way. In this case the argument that banning one book can be used as precedent to ban other books of objectionable content is fairly solid. In fact one can point to examples of society following these slippery slopes in the past.

Clearly, you do not understand. Many people on this forum do not understand why freedom of speech should be protected. Here, let me google that for you: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=why should freedom of speech be protected?

If I say something that causes serious harm to other people, isn't it reasonable to consider doing something to prevent me from doing that again? "Free speech is a right" But what about: "Your right ends when mine begins" Doesn't the pedophiles' rights to free speech ends when the children's right to not be abused begin? Yes, which is why it is illegal to abuse children sexually. The child's right to not be abused doesn't begin when a book is published. it begins with the act.

They can talk about wanting to rape kids all day long. As long as they don't actually do it. Just as if I were to advocate legalization of heroin, I shouldn't be treated as a user just for that. I heard there was lot of examples of first person experience in that book, which I suppose is grounds for questioning by authorities. But arrest? I don't think they have the right to do that.

You can buy books on military sniping, how to break into cars, etc. The comparison with Anarchist Cookbook is close to how I feel about this. This is one of those things that exists, and it'll continue to exist whether people find out about it or not. A few posters are too family friendly / protective, or naive, but it doesn't shock me. Amazon, as a business, will get rid of it because it's too inflammatory.

I don't like the book To Kill a Mockingbird. I don't think it should be removed / discarded for containing things I disagree with, I simply won't read it again. Maybe I won't even let my children read it. I'm sure some people love this book though, and would defend it as well as they can. To the people suggesting that this book will "harm" children, I disagree. Young children can't read for starters, so that kind of makes them immune to books. Children who can read wouldn't want to read a full chapter book, they want to read a picture book about building a treehouse or something. By the time a child would actually want to read a full book, why do you think they would pick this book? If they didn't like it / were scared by it, maybe they could simply... stop reading. Maybe I'm just desensitized, but maybe some of you are too sensitive about the book.

What exactly do you disagree with in TKaM? That black people shouldn't be unfairly arrested and jailed for crimes they didn't commit? I mean, it isn't my favorite book, but what exactly is objectionable in it?

And don't compare this to "How to kill a person" Or "How to build a bomb" etc. Because they are very different. For one, the general public doesn't know how to get away with something like child abuse. If you asked a large survey of people how to get away with murder, and how to get away with sexually abusing a child, my bet is people will generally know how to kill, and not rape. Killing is physical work you do yourself, and is completely dependent on YOU. While rape is something very psychological. It is not 100% dependent on you, but also the victim. You can teach someone how to kill in person, how to construct weapons, etc. But teaching someone how to abuse a child is something you most likely do over a medium (a book?). So stopping at least one small part of that medium helps. My money goes on that this author has committed crimes, and the police will try to figure them out. I think the police are more concerned with bringing down a child abuser who shares his techniques with the world to teach others than bringing down "Free speech". Unfortunately to bring him down "Free speech" comes as collateral.
