Seems I'm in a chatty mood tonight, so I thought I'd throw up yet another thread of delicious goodness for my brethren on TL. A friend of mine introduced me to this little place called OCremix some years ago, and frankly, Alongside teamliquid, OCR is probably a twin in terms of dedication, creativity and general awesomeness.
OCR is a site dedicated to archiving and remastering videogame music. It's the haunt of the progamer equivalent of the game music community- extremely talented amateurs and freelancers who put up extremely impressive work simply out of passion. OCR has made a whole bunch of community produced remix albums for games like doom, chronotrigger, final fantasy and donkey kong. It even produced the official soundtrack for the XBL version of streetfighter 2.
The site has a very strict hosting requirement, with each remix/piece being evaluated by a panel of judges before being allowed up, so there's about one or two new tracks a fortnight. The results are, however, stellar. There's stuff for pretty much every taste:
If you like rocking out:
(DOOM)
(Chronotrigger)
maybe something a bit more stirring?:
(chronotrigger)
(zelda)
(halo)
Want to chill?:
(Seiken densetsu 3 (secret of mana sequel) )
(unreal tournament)
(linus spacehead)
Or just a hit of nostalgia?:
(street fighter 2)
(megaman 2)
And of course there's even the odd one for the psychologically deviant among us..
OCRemix is awesome, some of my favourite remixes are Another Inspiration and Gerudo Peeples by a remixer named Scott Peeples. They're pretty old remixes though... but I still like them
Edit: Oh man the Unreal Tournament song brings up memories of facing worlds. The original Foregone Destruction is better than the ocremix version though imo
Bumping this because OCR is celebrating Metroid's 25th anniversary (holy shit I'm old) with a burst of new remixes of various Metroid songs, including publicizing Harmony of a Hunter - not an official OCR album, but a pretty awesome mix project of various Metroid stuff.
Really love the second of those two (Utopia) - not an often-listened to song, but it's so pretty, and the artist's guitar work is impressive.
Some of my favorites:
One of the new metroid mixes which I'm really digging (but it hasn't really had time to sink in yet, so I don't know how it will stand the test of time):
Can't believe I never saw this thread.. And can't believe it's only 2 pages long!!
OCR are amazing, love their work and have done for years - used to listen to their online radio station all the time while gaming. These guys really deserve more than they get.
Several thousand tweets directed to @Youtube later, they got their youtube account back, on the same day.
Meanwhile, I am determined to keep this thread alive singlehandedly if I must!
The newest OCR album to come out - 25 Year Legend - is a Legend of Zelda tribute to indie game composers. Every contributor to this album has composed for indie games in the past. zelda25.ocremix.org
As far as first impressions go, I'm really loving "Thunderstruck"
They just released a few days ago a KILLER Remake compil of Final Fantasy VI ( FF 3 for US) Original Soundtrack.
Balance and Ruin is a compilation shared freely on the OCR Website, made by Musicians from all over the world, and an hommage to the original soundtrack from 1994 by Nobuo Uematsu.
Some of the tracks are awesome, they mix up all music genres, from Orchestra to Dubstep, including Reggae, Rock, Metal, Classical guitar and a lot more. It is a pleasure to venture in these 4 CDs (!) full with more than 70 tracks.
So far my favorites are : for a fistful of nickels / Now is the winter / la montana de los caballos jovenes / The devil's lab / On the Run (The Returners).
On October 25th, 2012, OverClocked ReMix successfully funded its first Kickstarter project for this very album. Our funding goal was $30,000, which would go entirely toward the physical production of the 5-disc Balance and Ruin, licensing fees to Square Enix, and hiring of live musicians. Thanks to 2,509 fans from around the world, we greatly surpassed our original goal and ultimately raised a total of $153 633.
If you guys just want to listen to this stuff, you can do so here. Found this site the other day, and it kinda forces you to listen to a wide array of music.
