I was wondering what everyone prefers when it comes to watching VoDs and streams, livestream or uStream? What is your favorite of the two, if any, and why? These questions are not just for people who watch them but also for casters themselves.

For starters add something like this: Poll: Which do you prefer? Ustream (204) Livestream (72) JustinTV (21) 297 total votes Your vote: Which do you prefer? Maybe post your opinion too, because 3 lines aren't acceptable here for an OP.

Livestream used to be terrible every now and then but I don`t really experience it anymore, everything goes smooth when watching. Ustream has a bigger bitrate cap if I`m not mistaken though. edit: Actually I think you can go way over 500kbps with Procaster?

Why? UStream is easier on the eyes, has a lot less pop up ads and can go beyond 500 kbps. Livestream on the other hand is easier to broadcast with, simply because it requires less crap up in the background. UStream requires you to login, hop on the broadcaster in order for you to start up a stream. Livestream just requires either FMLE + Cam recorder or Procaster. UStream needs either FMLE + Cam Recorder + hopping onto UStream broadcaster. That alone makes it a pain in the ass to set up a stream. Procaster is easier to use, plus it's nice when it comes to managing chat. UStream chat is meh to manage, unless you hop onto an IRC client.

No, account verification doesn't do anything. I believe it was either 1 Gig or 10 Gigs last I checked. They start deleting them from your account automatically once you hit the limit. I would check, but they purged my account. =( I lied. It's actually 10 GB.

Livesteam like others have said have tons of ads that interrupt for no reason. Not even just the first ad that pop outs for like 15 minutes. After watching the stream for like 20-30 min, midst of a game changing micro battle, boom another ad goes on for 15 seconds and the game is over D: not to mention it seems to always cover the minimap with some ad

However, ustream does have better visual design and less pervasive advertising.

Assuming its of a similar quality Justin TV is like Ustream but they don't require you to keep a "ustream broadcast window" open in a web browser at all times. Like Ustream, they have uncap stream quality. So you can broadcast 720p video at 2000 Kbps is you like. However, I found that Justin tv has the worst network connectivity through my unscientific tests. When you're broadcasting at the exact same bitrate across 3 networks, more people will be able to connect to livestreams servers. In terms of connectivity, I would rank Livestream #1, Ustream #2, and Justin tv #3. But out of the 3 websites, Livestream has the most downtime.

However, ustream does have better visual design and less pervasive advertising. I absolutely agree. Every since Day9 switched I haven't been able to enjoy. Livestream just does everything for you and is much better if you don't want to think about how you're actually streaming live content, but UStream works better if you know what you're doing.

As for the quality I've found good and bad on both, so I'll give the edge to livestream as a viewer. I agree with the chat being easier on live stream. For UStream you must register and even then it limits your chat to like a line every 15 seconds. For live stream you just make a temp name and chat away. However, I still prefer UStream because in my experience it crashes less. Day[9] had a lot of problems nearing the end of his stay on live stream and since hes been streaming on UStream I rarely see him have problems. The only experience I've had with the two sites have been watching Day[9] though so I don't know 100 % which one would be better. All kinds of different experiences make me wonder ![]()

I do like Ustream because you can customize and do a lot more with your stream than on livestream. I don't really care about the fact that you can go above 500 bitrate on ustream anyway. I feel that if I did that, there'd be too many people with sucky enough internet that they wouldn't be able to watch. That might be what's going on with Day[9] for the people who experience lag. Justin.tv has a cap on people from each country (for whatever reason), so that's a no go.

2) Chat is easier. ustream uses IRC as its backbone, which makes moderating soooo much easier. Plus, I can disable the chat and run it from my IRC client. On my old PC, popout video + third party chat client is the best combination. 3) Stream quality - ustream is just so much better.

a) uStream bug doesn't allow me to watch uStream streams half the time. Needless to say, this is ridiculously stupid. b) Livestream is a lot easier to use and manage as the streamer. c) You can go over the 500kbps limit using Procaster. People saying you can't are simply wrong. d) uStream fps seems to bottleneck a lot when I stream with it and watch other uStream streams. Not always, but a lot. e) I like Livestream chat better.

The Ustream app only lets you watch a few featured streams, none of which cover live SCII tournaments.

Setting up that without buying a proper mixer for ustream/JTV is horrible and just not practical, so livestream is preferred for me. On the other hand, I much prefer watching Ustream and JTV because there's less risk for lag and in general (I guess the more techsavy tends to lean towards the two) the quality is superior. Edit: I realize it's an old thread but I remember searching a lot when I started streaming for this type of thread so figured I'd just add my own take. Not to mention that it was already bumped!

And also ustream has ads too. O.o I personally prefer ustream just because its streaming quality is better than Livestream (unless you pay for Livestream's premium). And Livestream has been having a problem with ads that show a black screen after a full-screen ad. I haven't noticed it as much, but it still exists here and there.

So ustream. But Livestream is obviously easier to setup and use, so I understand why alot of people like it. For major casts though, ustream should be a given.

You can watch streams sometimes directly from the website. I prefer, on my iPod, to watch livestream even though there is about a 50/50 chance that it will say "this page is not mobile compatible yet" because the ustream app literally only gives you a selection of 20 "favored / popular" streams, none of which are ones that are relevant for me (dog cams, random radio talk shows etc.) Above all however, justin.tv and own3d.
