I wasn't defending anything, it's merely a cause/effect relationship where North Korean leadership made a choice to ignore the threat of sanctions. It was their own mistake. The US is the big dog in this situation, and you don't piss off the big dog unless you want to get bitten. The big dog is going to do whats best for itself anyways because its the big dog and whether or not the big dog is an asshole or doing the right thing is subjective. I don't really know enough about the entire fiasco to defend sanctioning a country to the point of people losing their lives. All I do know is that I believe in democracy and the market economy and am not overly fond of a leader who is willing to let his people live in poverty while he dumps money into the military.

I agree that (non-military) sanctions tend to strengthen isolationist regimes rather than weakening them, Kim Jong Il will smuggle in his luxury goods anyway. Some contact with the world would make it more difficult to brainwash the north koreans. This doesn't excuse the leadership of the country, they are people who know very well what they are doing to their population in exchange for power.
