Hey, since i've been readin the forum for a long time and never signed up this is my first post, but I've got something big I wanna post but I can't make a thread obviosly so hopefully somebody still reads this off the dead thread.
I play blitz chess at chess.com to pass the time at work and for the first time ever I came into contact with a North Korean, the locations are based on IP so it can't be faked. But do you think this guy is genuine? the convo is very freaky.
I tried to bridge the gap with sc2 and he spoke again, lol.

very interesting, I won't begin to act like I know anything about being inside NK but from what we are all told they wouldn't have access to outside world. Of course there has been crazier things.

I googled North Korea Chat and all these channels came up for people to chat with NKs but none of them had any NKs in them.
I have a book called Pyongyang; a journey in North Korea by Guy Delsie, a cartoonist who worked there for a while and in that he tries to get one of them to read 1984 and they won't talk about it.
|
well, he could be someone rich or important
|
Well, if that dude is North Korean, this is of course interesting. I have my doubts though, which make it really hard for me to comment on it. Assuming he is actually from NK there's one thing that strikes me... You seem to carry out the conversation as a monologue where you're basically telling him your point of view. While it may be correct, it is like a slap in the face to the North Korean. You're bascially ripping away everything he thinks as evident, which is a way too offensive approach to achieve any kind of conversation.
edit: Not to say I wouldn't do the same. It's basically like briefly meeting an alien for the first time - You have so much to tell and so little time.
|
I'm sorry man, I got really excited, I have a BA in poli-sci and I have been studying NK for years, you're right that I was too agressive, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that you can't strip away years of indoctrination in a 20 minute chess game. But if I give him a glimpse of the comparative views maybe he can go to linktv.org and see his news channel up against the others.
Edit: my ip comes up international for some reason, I'm close to the border

Are you joking? "Wat country r u?" This alone makes it obvious.
|
Yeah, I dont think they are going to get any of this. Just a guess

USA would do well to take your advise aswell lol
Anyway, just because Korean leaders are dickheads does not mean that the sanctions should be implemented. By creating the sanctions they are isolating the people from the rest of the world an thereby making it very hard for the citizens to overthrow the government since they truly believe that they live in one of the better countries on this planet.

Haha. Nord Korea is so weird. I highly recommend the documentary "Det Røde Kapel" about a journalist, a comedian and a spastic that travel into Nord Korea. It is a bit to much but extremity funny and so Fucked.

I disagree with your logic. Stricter sanctions would push the country to the edge of collapse faster, while reduced sanctions would reward a racist, tyrannical regime by relieving it of the immediate threats of rebellion and of its own military disbanding. The accounts of North Korea are strongly reminiscent of 1984 and most other apocalyptic, totalitarian novels you could name. At this point outright invasion of the country would probably still be better for the people of North Korea than allowing North Koreans to be ruled by there own government.

Well I read an online article about a german who had an IT-company residing in NK (only german but I'll link it anyway: http://www.taz.de/1/archiv/print-archiv/printressorts/digi-artikel/?ressort=sw&dig=2010/06/22/a0004 ). He said that he, as a foreigner, was allowed to have global internet/telephone at home (costing 250euro/month). He was forbidden to get something similiar at his company (the employees werent allowed to possibly have access to it). Maybe it was someone like this.
|
Interesting, but this definately sounded like a national, unless German businessmen say things like, "Nobody wants war, South Korea wants it"
|
It's just another ploy to make the americans seem like bad guys and of course they know that we'll say no to that and look even worse to the NK people.

The USA doesn't have half a nation of people starving, although yes I agree military budget needs shrinkkkkkk.

North Korea is using threats and such, like nuclear missiles even though its evident they would never, they use it in order to gain supplies.
Says he won't go into further detail because this isn't "AP government class".
